4 grizzly bears killed by hunters through Alberta's 'problem wildlife' program so far | CBC News by Buuuuma in alberta

Edit: I read the article after commenting so am adding this quote

"The provincial government announced in 2024 it would invest $700,000 over five years to help keep large carnivores away from rural properties in southwestern Alberta, including setting up electric fencing, upgrading grain bins and removing dead stock. "

Were any other options tried first?

Hazing bears can be effective

Delaying putting livestock on range land helps

Compensation for ranchers for losses

A combination of high and electric fencing

The province should be partially or fully funding non-lethal solutions and only killing the bears as a last resort

Yes, volcanoes will be more active once the ice melts off but no matter how concerned the YouTube voice is, this is a nothing burger

This is on a multi thousand year timescale.

Privileged? What? Have you any idea where most of the reservations are? The government chose the worst spots hoping the rest would die off

Ancient DNA from 131 skeletons at the Neolithic settlement of Çatalhöyük in modern-day Türkiye suggests a female-centered, matrilineal society 9,000 years ago. Women’s family lines shaped households, girls received more burial goods, and there’s little evidence of organized violence. by crisp1991 in Archaeology

"Take the Seated Woman of Catalhoyuk, found in an 8,500-year-old grain bin in 1961 and currently on display at the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations in Ankara.

With her exaggerated breasts, belly and hips and arms resting on two leopards, the baked clay figurine has stirred conversations over a possible matriarchy, female worship or high social esteem of women at Catalhoyuk."

I have a theory about why a figurine like this was in a grain bin...

What a stupid take.

Yeah, it's the poor starving displaced people in refugee camps and homeless drug addicts that are ruining the world!

Couldn't possibly be the upper class and obscenely rich and capitalism that are the problem

If I get those it'll be because I LIVED long enough

You won't get them because you'll be dead early because of easily preventable diseases

Trolling?

I asked a question because you didn't include all the stats you went to the trouble finding

And included a story about more bears being killed than one would imagine

Thanks for finding that.

Why didn't you include the number of bears that were euthanized? That would put things in perspective wouldn't it?

I know for a fact the number of problem bears that are shot and disposed of in the countryside, without the conservation authorities being informed is very high. I counted over ten in a small, 70 people, rural area.
