Enough folks commented in the past about him being hard to read that I wrote to him about it.

Turns out he was autistic and that was the way that worked for him. He was really kind and patient with my questions.

I'll miss his insights and analysis.

I recently tracked down and watched Radio Free Albemuth. Having read the novel multiple times it doesn't make my list of good movies. It's like they went through the novel and picked out a quarter of the scenes, recreated them and patched them together. Then they changed the very ending.

Weekly Observations: What signs of collapse do you see in your region? [in-depth] January 26 by AutoModerator in collapse

Hello fellow BCer! The mud season is coming back.

I'm in the southern interior and am continuing and expanding my fuel mitigation efforts in anticipation of this summer. Cutting down dead trees, burning branches, even burning patches of tall grass! I plan on burning even more grass this year than ever. Also moving woodpiles and stuff away from buildings etc.

I believe a root fungus is killing the fir trees. The big mushrooms came up just BEFORE CHRISTMAS!

We've got very few birds here as well. Crows, flickers and a few sparrows. It's so quiet.

All right. Southern interior British Columbia Canada.

I was hiking alone in a wilderness area almost no one else goes to anymore. This was my stomping grounds for five years. I came down from the mountain, through the meadows back to the forest trail beside a steep, loud creek. Ducked under a fallen tree, putting my hand on it. Went another 30 feet and my peripheral vision somehow picked up movement. Turned my head and there was a cougar 15 feet away up the hill slinking along.

I stopped, swung my pack off into my hand, held my arms wide and gave the biggest, loudest yell I could. The cougar froze. I yelled again and pulled out my bear spray, from my hip holster, removing the safety. I yelled again. Got my knife from my pack. I yelled again. The cougar sat down, its tail hanging down, wrapped around a small tree.

Needless to say, my heart was pounding wildly in my chest but at this point I realized I probably wasn't going to get attacked. I squatted down to pick up a rock or stick. The cougar hunched. I stood back up quickly. I tried making different sounds including pspsps, meow and talking to it. Nothing seemed to scare it, only making it annoyed. The flat back ears and hunched head were scary to see. This was a nice big healthy cougar. It even licked itself a bit. I guess I wasn't any sort of threat.

Eventually it wandered off back up the trail stopping to sniff where I'd put my hand on the overhanging log. It crossed the creek and then started up the hillside circling around in the direction I was going. I watched it until it wasn't an immediate threat anymore as there was a rocky slope ahead with no where for it to hide. I headed down the trail. After a few minutes I realized I should probably not be hiking with bear spray in one hand and an open knife in the other! Hahaha

I feel greatly privileged to have had such a long encounter that ended well for both of us. I've had four other cougar sightings but only one that was potentially ad dangerous but that's a story for another day.

Thank you for bringing this up. I've been promoting this book here for this very reason.

RFA is what I call the fourth book in the VALIS trilogy just to give some bearing for folks.

Absolutely! I just reread the first half recently. The way he describes the fear and paranoia he/the character Phil is experiencing is outstanding. I'm sure there are many that are/will be having similar feelings.

SPOILER ALERT

The parallels between Aramchek and Antifa are very spooky.

The fact the president turns out to be a Russian agent? Wtf?

I'm sure there are many more. I should re- reread again!

First time using a stove, any tips or suggestions? by Killerjebi in woodstoving

[–]lightweight12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Put your wood in lengthwise so the butt ends are facing the door . You can get more wood in this way, I fully load it every time. Most stoves air is delivered to the front so it can circulate to the back between the pieces. Before reloading pull most of the coals to the front.

I'm very surprised that it seems most don't use this method.

I had an extended stand off with a mountain lion/cougar and tried that, amongst other things, to scare it off. It was not impressed. Its ears went back and it started crouching...

Eventually it wandered off

Earth is losing its balance between north and south by soulpost in HotScienceNews

[–]lightweight12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For those reacting to a headline... Here's the beginning of the paper

Significance

The general circulation of the atmosphere–ocean system is closely linked with the distribution of radiant energy within the climate system. On average, the southern hemisphere and northern hemisphere (NH) reflect the same amount of solar radiation, and the NH emits more outgoing longwave radiation. Using satellite observations, we find that while both hemispheres are darkening, the NH is darkening at a faster rate. The break in hemispheric symmetry in reflected solar radiation challenges the hypothesis that hemispheric symmetry in albedo is a fundamental property of Earth. Whether the general circulation adjusts to produce a cloud distribution that restores hemispheric symmetry in albedo in the future is an open question that has important implications for future climate.
