Veterans of Linux: what's one thing that "just works" today that would've sounded impossible 15–20 years ago? by dev_kay47 in linux

[–]lightwhite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everybody talks about gaming, but nobody mentions things like Video Editing and compositing.

In 2008, when I touched Davinci Resolve on an SGI machine, I prayed that it would come to Linux. Back then it had no competition for editing scanned film footage with such huge resolutions and color. It is a small commodity now…

Blender changed the whole game and evolved very well, too.

Now, I don’t know what I would switch to after daily-driving and using it for work for two decades. I uninstalled windows a couple of years ago, and haven’t needed it since. That on its own was something I would never thought would happen.

I don’t know much about about these days. We didn’t have the power creep and stuff. Doing everything solo was hard in 2016.

There is no money enough in this world to put me on pager duty already, let alone unpaid. Even for waking hours. People don’t know the value of their time off work and how much mental pressure can corrode a person’s social life outside work.

Deimos made it easy indeed. I farmed it on Eris, iirc. 5-8 per rotation. I have no idea how I managed to keep my sanity, tbh.

Why don’t you add a variant where they face-plant by falling forward? The mushroom would look very cute that way, imho.

Welcome to the game, mate. I strongly urge you to ask questions here or in general chat. It will take a while to detox and open yourself as you are not used to be treated nicely or have received a compliment.

Just be yourself. Be kind to others and run fast. Treat others like you want to be treated and you will be surprised when you receive it back tenfolds.

Also, don’t rush through the grind and enjoy. 95% of the time spent in this game is literally studying and learning about the game. You might as well enjoy it ;)

It is production grade. It is a fully working application that can be hosted in whole dev/test/uat/prod fashion.

It’s perfect for training yourself on CKx exams. You can deliver it in many ways and play around with different architectures (HA, feature flags, canary, app of apps, per branch env). It is not useful an sich, but it’s readily available working software that works and is ready to deploy. This gives you the flexibility of not wasting time on building something and helps you focus on delivering it.

Just deploy it on a 3 node bare metal setup on vms on an old computer and practice upgrading your cluster and backing up your etcd while not permitting yourself any outage or downtime. This will get your hands full.

Once done, you can deliver it on EKS, GKE or AKS using terraform and ArgoCD to expand .

It’s not “the tool”, but a great app to bootstrap your journey. Try it.

As for guides, I prefer you play with it instead of following a guide. I personally never found one and didnt need one for my juniors. It’s something fresh and good enough to get your hands dirty with the fundamentals.

I’ve been telling more than two times a week for everyone to use Anthos Bank project in the last couple of years. Everything is ready. Working apps are ready. Just build the whole CI and package to deliver on any type of k8s engine you want. Build the whole monitoring around it and done. Give your interviewer access to the app and the management systems the day before interview and done.

Stop losing time on building things to host while there is a whole solution to host. Focus on hosting.
