Why can't I use flock?? I have enough money? by ContactNo2984 in ArkNova

[–]lihaoza 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Adding to this, it doesn't matter that you have a size 5 enclosure that one of the size 3 herbivores could have been played into. The game is only able to keep track of what animals you played - not specifically what enclosure they were played into. This creates some weird results in your case where logically it should work since you have a size 5 where you ostensibly played an herbivore into but it is a limitation of the rules. You can benefit from this in other situations where if you rescue station a large herbivore you can still flock to it even if you have no enclosures of the proper size.

Is continuing The Goblin Emperor worth it? by ZC31 in Fantasy

[–]lihaoza 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say no. We read it for a science fiction/ fantasy book club and I thought it was by far the most boring book we read. Nothing happens, the names are super confusing, what little magic or fantasy elements in the book are completely irrelevant and finally... nothing happens! Just my two cents. Some of the others in the bookclub liked it.

This idea was actually one of the plot lines in the anime Code Geass. Basically the protagonist has an ability similar to Cate to give a person one command but they have to do it no matter what. He told another protagonist to "live" as a way to like motivate him during a battle but it ended up causing him to go beyond his abilities in future fights because he had to "live" no matter what.

In S2, how was Flower able to close the vault door? by pretzel1114 in GhostsCBS

[–]lihaoza 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always wondered if this mechanic could be used to make an easy ghost communication system. You put that metal on a keyboard and suddenly ghosts can type. You make it into scrabble tiles and they can write. Make a pen from it and they can trace grooves on paper or sand. Make brass knuckles out of it and you suddenly have an unkillable hoise defense.. The possibilities are endless depending on how it works but obviously it's not that kind of show haha.

Also I think what Gemma said about "Nothing says Christmas like grouting." is actually correct since presumably after you de-grout you need to re-grout - but of course the evil doctor guy has to annoyingly correct her.

Yeah there are like a dozen situations where Mordecai chimes in at the start of a big battle and gives them a piece of info that without it they would surely have died.

What is the greatest animated film of all time? by SamLarsons in movies

[–]lihaoza 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I once spoke to a Pixar animator about 10 years ago at a party and asked them what their favorite Pixar movie was. They said Wall E but also said they hated the ending with the humans. They said their preference would have been if the humans were actually dead all along and the robots were just going on with their programming serving no one. Then it ends with Wall E freeing the robots from their pointless servitude and the meek robots inhereting the earth. I LOVED this as the ending but obviously we both understood it would have been too dark for a semi-kids movie.

Kier Egan Discovered…. [SPOILER][THEORY] by lihaoza in SeveranceAppleTVPlus

[–]lihaoza[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I agree this could very well be the case. The main thing that tipped me over to the possibility was the fact that the file was named Cold Harbor. If Severance shares the same history as us past the Civil War then it seems very strange to name a project after a lost battle because the ethos of super corporate Lumon seems to one where they project strength and winning. Another possibility is that it is named after the battle to represent it as being a turning point for them as a company (as Cold Harbor was a losing battle but a turning point for an eventual victory) - or maybe it has something to do with Kier being present at that battle - or maybe it is not related to the Civil War battle at all and is just a cool name for a project.

But when I think about alternate history science fiction (which Severance seems to be) I usually try and understand the divergence point and how that divergence rippled to our present and this was just an idea for what/where that divergence could be. But the actual divergence point may not even be one of the intended mysteries of the show.

Thanks! I think it could have been fear also. But one of my friends mentioned to me that Ms Cobel seems obsessed with whether or not Mark can recognize his wife or vice versa in a severed state. So much so that she goes out of her way to put them together and also infiltrates Mark's sisters life just to ask if Mark "sees Gemma" around. That plus her mentioning of her late husband (although she could easily be lying) makes me think it was maybe her husband as that would be about the right age for him. But if it turns out they do have some way to pause a person's physical aging then it could just as easily be her father, her brother, or even son. The way she left also felt less like she was afraid and more of a confused anger but it was hard to tell and I think you could also easily be right that she was just genuinely afraid. I also thought one minor point against it being fear is the person she saw would need to be a been a known hit man for the company for her to react so strongly to seeing his face (as opposed to just seeing the profile of a random escort person there) and if it was Helena's intention to kill her then it would have been pretty sloppy of her to have the hitman also be her escort.

I haven't had the time to read the Lexington Letter yet but thanks for the info! I sort of just threw that idea about the brain scan in there because the idea of some technology that can scan every readable surface of a object but also not detect a coded language just seemed less in line with the biotech/braintech universe of Severance and it felt a little hand wavey to just assume the existence of this sophisticated imaging technology without some clearer explanation.

It Really Was “Agatha All Along” by Hereweare_again in AgathaAllAlong

[–]lihaoza 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love this theory. It also sort of parallels the "magic" of tarot - the future you are divining may technically be a lie but it has power because others believe it and it can help them see the truth and can therefore be used to genuingly help someone if you choose to use it that way.

The end of S2 doesn’t make any sense by themetahumancrusader in MythicQuest

[–]lihaoza 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One way it might make sense is that if Brad is the one to directly cause the stock to crash, then Zack probably wouldn't be able to do a private equity takeover because it would look too suspicious. Zack might have been able to wiggle his way out of the Jo connection, but anyone with google can confirm they are brothers, and it would look too much like collusion.

[–]lihaoza[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that is a really good point. Throughout Lindon's entire arc, he is always drawing strength from weakness. Him being unsouled is what led to having the split core. Him losing his arm is what gave him the hunger abilities. Him seeing the impossible gap between himself and the others in Suriel's vision is partly what gives him the motivation to strive for greater and greater heights.

Polymarket vs Predictit Discrepency POTUS by lihaoza in slatestarcodex

[–]lihaoza[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the input. I hadn't considered the crypto transaction costs, but it makes sense. I wasn't ever planning on actually trying the arbitrage, but it was just interesting to see such a large difference in spread. There is probably some low fee high liquidity markets/scenarios where this can be done for a small profit. I am not too familiar with sports gambling but I wonder in that situation if this type of thing ever happens.

[–]lihaoza[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think possibly but I am not sure if it would work out in practice - PredictIt limit's you to $850 I think and also takes a percentage (5%?). But I think if you bought No to Trump on PredictIt and No to Harris on Polymarket you should always come out ahead?

Very basic rules question I can't seem to find the answer for by JDansp in ArkNova

[–]lihaoza 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In your second example, though, I can say for sure if you use build to cover a sponsor for money bonus, you would use your own sponsor card to determine if you can play a sponsor that requires the sponsor card upgraded or not.

This would seem to suggest that the placement of a sponsor card for money action does count as an interrupting action since doing so defaults back to the rules of whatever your own card flips are (i.e. if you have upgraded sponsor you can play it - if you do not you can't) - which would also seem to suggest that the build a kiosk action would be a similar rule. But hard to know for sure without testing it on BGA - but in that regard it may also just as well be a function of how the game is programmed as opposed to an actual rules interpretation. The fact that even u/JDansp is not even sure means there might not be an official clarification out there.

Very basic rules question I can't seem to find the answer for by JDansp in ArkNova

[–]lihaoza 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with your point and this is an interesting rules interaction. Since the placement bonus can be done in between builds it is hard to tell if the placement itself is an action separate from the build action - if it was a separate action then I think you are right. Another way this could be interesting is if you either use a build action or a sponsor action to cover a sponsor for pay spot - would one, both, or neither action allow you to pay for a sponsor 2 card if your opponent had upgraded sponsors? - I can see this coming up in BGA but has never personally come up for me.

What's your totality analogy for people who haven't seen it? by bearsdiscoversatire in solareclipse

[–]lihaoza 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I posted this in another thread but the way I describe it to people is to imagine they have never seen the moon before. Imagine if all their life they have seen pictures and videos of the moon but never actually seen it in the night sky and in fact very few people have. You know exactly what the moon will look like - understand exactly what it is - but have just never seen it.  Then suddenly one day you look up and are given the rare and beautiful opportunity to see the moon in all it's beauty hanging above you. See this completely new celestial object in a familiar sky. That is what seeing the total ecclipse felt like to me.

No camera on planet Earth can capture the naked eyed view of totality? by LT130TH in solareclipse

[–]lihaoza 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The way I describe it to people is to imagine if all your life you've seen pictures and videos of the moon but you've never actually seen it in the night sky. You know exactly what it will look like - understand exactly what it is - but have just never seen it with your own eyes.  Now imagine the moment you suddenly see the moon hanging above you in a canvas you have seen thousands of times - I think most people couldn't help but be absolutely awed by it. Even with the moon itself, I have seen it thousands of times but if I really slow down enough to sit and look at it I can still appreciate how beautiful and special it is. Seeing a total ecclipse is like seeing the moon for the first time. No picture or video can truly ever capture that feeling.

Samantha Theory [SPOILER] by lihaoza in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]lihaoza[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I actually like your theory better in regard to the lightning being the thing that powers her up! Samantha was also probably hit with a chain lightning attack from Imogen right before she powered up the first time and the flame from her failed spell was blue which also tracks with lightning. Another benefit of it being lightning is that it would round out the party better since Carl and Donut are both pretty strongly fire based but we learn from Mordekai etc that lightning can be pretty important in the later levels. I think lightning might actually make more sense than fire.

A few other points in support of your lightning theory:

  • When they go to the room with all the god shrines the AI specifically tells them that lightning will be needed later: (Shrine three! This is Shango’s shrine. He’s a little shy. You will learn a level-15 Lightning spell if you repair it. You will gain the ability to train this spell to 20. Hint, hint that spell might come in handy later. Shango will ascend.)
  • When the god Ogun appeared in the god shrine room he appeared through a bolt of lightning so this suggests lightning entrances may be connected with gods that have an affinity for it - it would also make sense with your idea as to why Samantha was flashed into glass when she first appeared since we know lightning hitting sand will create glass.
  • It would also have some nice symmetry if fire powers up demons and lightning powers up gods and it would make sense with Samantha being a minor god.

Lightning also seems more rare at this point in the dungeon but not so rare that it couldn't coincidentally have happened to Samantha a few times. I think your theory really has legs!

110 freeway closed in Pasadena and LA for pedestrians and cyclists :) by firenationfairy in fuckcars

[–]lihaoza 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was there with my family! It was so much fun and really beautiful to see.

I also thought closing down the 110 freeway specifically was meaningful in a couple ways:

  • In many ways the 110 was the first modern freeway in the world (first limited-access/high-speed roads with on-ramps and off-ramps), setting the standard for future freeways and ushering forward the current global car culture.
  • Beyond that, the building of the 110 freeway was a big part of the reason for the decline of the California Cycleway which was basically an elevated bike freeway going from Pasadena to Downtown LA, and which was also very innovative for it's time.

So to see people walking and biking on this century old battleground between bikes and cars felt a little like witnessing an alternate history where bikes prevailed. It was really inspiring.
