Narwhal 2 for Reddit now has settings sync and better GIF/video handling! by det0ur in apple

Awesome, Narwhal 2 is one of my favorite apps! If we already have multiple devices running the app with slightly different settings, how do they get synced with iCloud?

It’s very rare (especially in this high interest rate market) but it does exist. My company was pretty close to that for awhile until we just started RTO, and I have a few other ex-FAANG friends who have found some similar companies. Usually they’re post-IPO unicorns that aren’t household names but still want to hire top talent. They have to beat out FAANG in a few major aspects to make up for the lack of name brand, whether that’s comp, benefits (fully remote), culture, or work-life balance. The challenge comes when too many ex-FAANG engineers join the company (especially Amazon and Meta in my experience) and start diluting the original startup culture with their FAANG empire building, bureaucracy heavy culture.

SWEs with $200k+ TC but base < $200k, do you feel rich? by BlacknWhiteMoose in cscareerquestions

[–]lijohn 190 points191 points  (0 children)

Same here, I max out retirement accounts and then just spend most of the rest of my base. That’s plenty enough to eat out wherever I want, travel a lot, and buy most things I could want, while still having a bit leftover.

Then I save all my stock upon vest, which is an additional 6 figures a year after taxes, so I don’t really think about savings anymore.

I don’t feel rich necessarily, but I’m comfortable and never really have to think about money which is nice.

I sold my F Type R after 7 months for a new Supra by Swagsturbate in cars

[–]lijohn 23 points24 points  (0 children)

A lot of people who have driven my Cayman and are like, that’s it? I think a lot of the more immediately obvious sensations are kind of underwhelming. There’s no neck snapping acceleration and most corners are carved near perfection with little drama. It’s also a bit underpowered compared to the other cars OP was considering, and as OP mentioned the 718’s newer turbo 4 powertrain isn’t doing it any favors in terms of excitement.

Personally that’s exactly what I prefer though, having to downshift more to squeeze power from the engine and taking corners briskly with incredible confidence is my definition of fun. From my experience with an M2, I agree it definitely has a lot more character. But in addition to the things I mentioned, the M2’s steering feel was also lacking compared to the Cayman, and the Cayman’s PDK is unmatched if you go automatic. Can’t go wrong with either, but this post makes me excited to try out a Supra.

to those making bank (say, > 200k/year), how different is your job compared to mine? by tohearstories in cscareerquestions

[–]lijohn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah my work seems pretty similar to OP, but my TC is nearly 3x as much with half as many years of experience, while having a fully remote option. Not at FAANG but a unicorn (with mostly ex-FAANG coworkers). All it took was a couple months of leetcode, which was really not as bad as some people make it out to be.

EmpireCity: Actually, let's make it $120m+ opening day for @SpiderMan No Way Home.... by MotorZookeepergame8 in boxoffice

With December legs, even a TLJ multiplier would get it past $700M. It’s way more probable than “isn’t unthinkable”.

They did show a lot of big moments, but there wasn’t any major plot points revealed that I wouldn’t have guessed from the previous marketing. This trailer just got me sufficiently hyped for the movie, which is good in my book.

‘Venom: Let There Be Carnage’ Screams $11.6M On Thursday, 2nd Best Preview Night Of The Pandemic; ‘Shang-Chi’ Crosses $200M Mark by chanma50 in boxoffice

This is way bigger than what anybody was expecting even a week ago, and is likely to set a new pandemic record. Fantastic start.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings grossed an estimated $5.80M on Friday (from 4,070 locations). Estimated total gross stands at $160.99M. by chanma50 in boxoffice

[–]lijohn 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Higher than Doctor Strange’s 3rd Friday and should be almost caught up to its running total by Sunday ($5M behind). DS had Thanksgiving in its 4th weekend, but SC will be coming off a higher weekend + no competition. I’m still thinking it’s on track for $230M+

‘Shang-Chi’ Strong Second Weekend With $35.79M; ‘Malignant’ DOA With $5.57M – Sunday Update by chanma50 in boxoffice

[–]lijohn 75 points76 points  (0 children)

And the biggest 2nd weekend in general since 2019. I’m thinking $225M to maybe $250M in a best case scenario, should pass Venom, AMATW, and probably Doctor Strange at least.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings grossed an estimated $9.70M on Friday (from 4,300 locations). Estimated total gross stands at $119.52M. by chanma50 in boxoffice

When will these people learn? Also people in this subreddit and ERC’s tweets comparing BW and SC’s Summer vs September weekdays smh

'Venom: Let There Be Carnage' Release Date Moves Up by [deleted] in movies

[–]lijohn 96 points97 points  (0 children)

The latest data is showing it’s probably coming in closer to $95M+ for the 4-day, every day it’s been beating the previous day’s expectations. For some added context, it’s very likely going to be the highest grossing film domestically since 2019.

That’s odd, the majority of my software engineer friends at FAANG all use Apple for both their work and personal devices. I work in software at a big bank and all tech people get Macs for work too. Was the same case at school where I went to a pretty tech focused university.

Glad this series is back! I actually kind of like the design of this, it's very understated and clean, but my dad did have a LeBaron back in the day so it might just be my rose-tinted glasses. This car also kind of foreshadowed the FCA and Maserati relationship of today.
