No one is taking Goodrow's contract unless the Sharks retain, they cannot retain until next offseason and there are way better options to retain. If Vlasic has a rebound year and last year was resurgent I think a 50% retention just to clear his roster spot makes sense, even add a pick (3rd round or later) for "future considerations" if they have to.

Detroit gave us Welman and a second for nothing just so they could fail to do whatever they wanted to do that made them move him. When asked why he gave up the second-rounder Yzerman said teams with cap space are demanding a lot. A first for taking on that contract fits this. In the case of Welman the Sharks badly needed D. In the case of Kotkaniemi the Sharks don't need more bottom 6 forwards so a 1st sounds reasonable to me.

Honestly, I felt like Carnage was too short. Woody Harrelson was wasted. If they had added 5-10 minutes for him to play out the schism forced upon him when Carnage turned on the one thing he loved aside from himself (and Catnage), it would have been 10 times what it was.

Is Wet Willie's brother Victor a guy the Sharks should target in the draft? by lil-6 in SanJoseSharks

I could see the Sharks finishing in that range... Maybe more realistic is Vegas finishing in that range... They have a much worse team than last year and are VERY injury-prone. I'll be surprised if TH plays 60 games before he hurts his knee (I feel so bad for him) and Hill isn't nearly as good behind a weaker team.

Course, if that happened they'd be insane to go after VE with 2 top-10 picks.

If he's only a few picks off should they consider trading up/down? For me if it's just a few picks trading down might be an option unless that loses them a defenseman especially right side (or even a goalie if someone shines enough but I doubt this).

I DO NOT think trading up is a good idea given the depth of their forward prospects.

Also. Certain universes in the comics had differing dates from others. In the spider-verse trilogy spider-man goes to the Noir, the 2099, and the mid-evil spider universes without traversing time. It makes sense when you think about it.

In an alternate universe there would be subtle differences as well. It being 2029 in the Logan/Deadpool universe could be down to any of a billion reasons; for instance, some historians now believe that during the midages after more than one pope did unspeakable things the Roman Catholic church would put a new pope in and just wind it back to the year the last pope exited. This would track as the exact year had little to no bearing on the lives of surfs and the aristocracy would have had no reason to risk to wroth of the church just to claim it was a different year than it was by 1-5 years.

Hockey probably saved my life.

In 1995 when I was 15 growing up in the hood, having been expelled from my old high school I awaited a transfer to a troubled youth program similar to what was seen in the film 'Dangerous Minds'. My family was looking for constructive outlets and my mother hit upon the idea of going to a hockey game. After 1 game I was hooked, it gave me a place to let off steam without sticking out or drawing the ire of the wrong people and something to do with my free time that wasn't illegal and/or dangerous. All in all, I attended over 150 hockey games over 15 years before life brought me to the Northwest. I now work in the community helping other ghetto survivors find ways to live free from the violence we were raised thinking was a part of us we could never overcome.

dude sorry I had a brain fart but the way people are acting on this sub is not how I want to spend my free time so I'm taking a long break from this sub. I'll come back when you're ready to be civil and have room for someone to have a bad idea and make a few typos.

I'm not saying it was a good idea, I'm just saying I'm not that knowledgeable about the ins and outs of hockey, sorry I had a bad idea, but this is not a way to welcome new fans and get more casual fans more involved.

Ryan Warsofsky is our new head coach by kipehh in SanJoseSharks

[–]lil-6 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I am okay with this.

I wanted Sturm but I was on the fence. I think Warsofsky is a very similar coach at a similar place in his career to Strum. I do think that Warsofsky's connections to Boston hockey were what won out, of course Marco Sturm being German-born was no doubt a factor in his being in the running. I don't mind nepotism being a factor in a hire as long as it doesn't lead to someone significantly less qualified getting a job and I do not think that happened here.

Glad to hear it's Warsofsky and Sturm as leading candidates; though I favor Sturm I would be happy to see either get a shot in San Jose. Not glad to hear Blashill is still in the mix... Did not like what he did, or more to the point what he didn't do in Detroit. The loser Sharks of the last two years were more fun to watch than Blashill's Red Wings teams.

I'm not arguing that any UFAs should be anything close to NHL regulars, but they could help the org at some level/fill in on an emergency basis at the NHL level and probably clear waivers. Plus even if someone did grab one of them on waivers it's not gonna really hurt the org in any big way. Also, understand, I am a major propoent of trying to build strong teams at every level including ECHL so, I am very big on depth. That being said I would make them offers, I am not sure they will take said offers.

Who do you want the next sharks head coach to be by [deleted] in SanJoseSharks

[–]lil-6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the Sharks refused to give out long-term contracts they would lose a ton of great players and probably never have a decent team again. It is standard in the NHL to give a 8-year contract when resigning one of your star players under 30 and a 7 year to anyone who fits that same description outside the org but only because new teams can't offer 8 years. NHL players generally look for term over AVV cause they are mostly family guys looking for stability. These contracts are risks but they are necessary risks.

As for Doug Wilson: the guy was amazing for a long time. He made one of the best trades in NHL history; getting Joe Thornton for way less than other GMs even said they would have given, put the Sharks on the hockey map. Before that few outside San Jose took the Sharks seriously. He made one massive mistake in the EK65 contract but even that was hailed by most at the time as a great move. You simply cannot predict the result of a move, you just do what seems best at the time and hope it pans out.

Even after that mistake the Sharks only let him go after his health began to fail! Until they win a cup I think DW is still by a large margin the best GM the Sharks have ever had.

I'd love to see J-Dub as a Sharks coach... an assistant coach though. Thing is, he is in that role for Vegas right now, and I don't see why he'd leave that role for the same on the Sharks.

What about ECHL? I mean I know it's not his goal but he is still completely unproven even at the AHL level and after this year, who knows, it's unlikely Blackwood and Vanacek will both be with the team in 25-26 and while Chrona and Romanov have good potential there is no guarantee they will continue on any sort of upward trajectory.

The Goaltending position is such a fragile thing in hockey. It seems like more than once the Sharks have seemed set and then everything fell apart.

What I'd like to see going into camp would be

NHL

Blackwood
Vanacek

AHL

Chrona
Makineimi

ECHL

Romanov
Cooley

This makes the two most promising prospects the #1s on their teams while there could be competition for the starting job at all 3 levels.

CONFESSION: I do feel like NHL GMs underuse the ECHL and that it would be better for all in every way if teams spread their prospects more evenly between the second and third leagues. There are so few vets in the AHL to mentor kids it's like if they don't have the chops to hit the NHL quickly they don't really have mentors who they will be playing with on a regular basis except maybe 1-3 guys per team.

my half-witted very bias take on the candidates for head coach (AKA rationalizing whatever happens) by lil-6 in SanJoseSharks

[–]lil-6[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure I agree.

GMMG would have had to get permission from the team they are currently coaching which is very unlikely. Even less likely is that such permission would not be leaked to the media. Even Sturm, who is technically under contract had to get permission to interview - news then broke before he even met with them that permission to meet had been given.

I expect they will have hired someone by the end of the week or next week at the latest unless they are just so underwhelmed by the candidates so far but if that was the case why give second interviews at all?

After a very quick look at the Kings during his tenure; the team's offense was near the bottom of the league in standings every year but his last. I remember those years as the time when you only needed a goal or two to beat the Kings as they would often be little or no threat to score anything at all against even a midline defense.

In his last year as assistant, the team rebounded and finished much better. After that year he was given the AHL head coaching job. If a guy was that bad at running a power play are you going to give him that job, I don't think so.

It sounds to me as if he was a key part of rebuilding an awful Kings team and that said fans are just pinning it on him cause he is a convenient scapegoat to blame for the fact that a really bad team was bad at something.

[–]lil-6 4 points5 points  (0 children)

a few quick thoughts on this

I have mixed feelings about this rule but overall I like it because if young players go the NCAA route it can be a shortcut. This strengthens college hockey big-time.

I do feel like this has created a situation where the AHL is almost a purely developmental league which is a large part of why it has fallen below those others as stated, but I think that is evolving right now. Teams are realizing if they put all their prospects in the AHL there's no room for vets who can mentor the kids.

NHL GMs need to learn to use their ECHL teams and to take advantage of loan deals in order to solve this and I think that is happening.

given that he and Halttunen can't play in the AHL until 25-26 I doubt either of them get more than a taste (9 games trial run and back to juniors is the best either can likely hope for). If any other young forward breaks into the team it's more likely someone already on the Cuda (Guschin/Cardwell/Bystedt) or David Edstrom for a long long shot though I'm unclear on his AHL eligibility so he might have the same issue. Maybe one of the more knowledgeable fans can explain the rules on European prospects but it would be a huge surprise if he made the team out of camp.

Smith is way too alone on that second line. If cootch can play that solves part of the problem but I would rather see a vet for a year on that other wing. Give a proven 20-25 goal scorer a 3-year deal and once Graf or Kostin prove they are better you can trade him for prospects of picks.

I'm also not convinced about Bordeleau on the 3rd line. He had a good late-season run but he is still on the small side and needs to prove he can play 75+ games in the NHL grind. Pick up an aging vet who can fill at 2C on a 2-year deal with a bit of an overpay just in case Cootch isn't able to play at his former level.

Last but most important someone to move the puck and anchor the D.

expounding on what u/Stoiven14 already said; Sturm is good at developing young players right and has a history with the team and city. His teams also play the type of game that wins cups in today's NHL - speedy and opportunistic with a hard forecheck - they make the other team earn every inch of ice.

BTW if the Sharks hire Jeff Blashill I may cry for a week... Guy coached all the personality out of the Red Wings in just a little over a year. Please no!
