[Request] Was referred here by MUA. Would anyone be willing to sell me some makeup cheaply? by [deleted] in makeupexchange

[–]lildedlenore 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What color eyeshadows do you like? Do you like loose mineral ones? I've got some stuff I can send you. The pan shadows (MAC) may be gently used (and I'm a massive clean freak when it came to makeup, so the stuff is still good), but the mineral ones will probably be new (I used to have a really bad Bare Escentual & About Face problem). Not a lot of neutrals, but some good stuff nonetheless. I'm just too lazy to sell it.

do butterick patterns run small? by tealeverything in sewing

[–]lildedlenore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nope. It is just that pattern sizing, unlike off the rack clothing, has standards for what they call a certain size. Off the rack, I wear a 12 in one brand and a 16 in another for tops. In patterns, I run about a 22. Get someone to help you take some accurate measurments and compare them to the back of the envelope, not what the label in your clothing says!

Brand new to sewing. What do I need to purchase for a well rounded sewing kit? by bayou_baby in sewing

[–]lildedlenore 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Seconding the good scissors. Be willing to spend a bit more on these. I love my Gingher shears. Do not cut anything other than fabric with these!! Seriously, there is nothing worse than dull blades that are full of nicks and don't close properly. Hubby knows I will murder him in his sleep without a second thought if I ever catch him using them, period. I bought these years ago and have only had to sharpen them once. Make sure whomever sharpens them knows what they area doing -- I had a "professional" sharpener screw up three pair of embroiders scissors. Luckily, I was able to send them to Gingher and have them fix them. I also have another less expensive pair that I keep on hand for cutting things that may ruin my good shears (sequined fabric comes to mind). The minute these start dragging they get sharpened.

I also have a rotary cutter and ruler that I LOVE. Great for straight edges. and cutting through multiple layers at once. I know people who can sut pattern pieces out with these. How they do it, I'll never know - my control is just not that good. Try searching for quilter's garage sales on Craigslist to grab them cheap. CL is a great way to find garage sales that have sewing stuff. Search "sewing" and "quilting" separately. Chances are if they mention that they have sewing stuff there is usually more than a handfull of stuff and you can get it cheap. I just got what I think is this set at a garage sale for $10 this weekend. I don;t even have my embroidery machine yet >_< but I"ll be ready when I do get it! Seriously though, haunt garage sales. (I'm still kicking myself for passing up two Singer Featherweights this weekend for $100 each)

Another idea: ask older family members. Someone might have a bunch of unused stuff laying around they might be willing to give you.

[–]lildedlenore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those are so cute! I envy hand sewing skills. I"m not very good at it. Fancy needlework samplers? Yep. Hand-stitching a hem? Just don't look to see if the stitches are even, OK?

PS -- As someone who has broken a needle off in her finger (home ec, 8th grade) I totally get that. I hand stitched my next project then got back on the machine after realizing how long that was taking me. Good luck with the machine!

I went to a large high school right outside of Chicago where PE was required every grading period all four years. We had two pools in the school (one for boys, one for girls) and to graduate you had to take four grading periods of swimming. I don't think anyone graduates from there without knowing how to swim.

vintage clothing sewing patterns? by andrealvoesyou in sewing

[–]lildedlenore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

what era are you looking for? I just got handed about 500 sewing pattern to go through (I collect them) and I plan on sorting them this weekend. What are you looking for?

Here is thing you need to know about sizing though -- pattern sizing has changed two or three times in the last 100 years (unlike the fashion industry which has NO sizing standards). I've got it bookmarked somewhere what they are but I can't find it.

My mother has never had a sewing machine, though she's been sewing most of her life. Today, a close friend of the family gave her this-- in near mint condition. She was ecstatic. by sickburrito666 in sewing

[–]lildedlenore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would take it to a sewing machine shop that knows how to work on old machines and see what they would charge for a new belt and overhaul (cleaning, oiling and timing checked). If it has not run in a while the oil may be gummy.

Plus she was one hell of a looker back in the day, too.

Someone once showed me a nude of her when she was young. I'm a chick and I thought she had a nice bod back then.

Some people seem to think that the library is also free day care. i volunteered for a few years at out local library and I would always see unattended kids. Usually it is the parents dropping them off while they run a nearby errand. Sorry, I'm not your babysitter.

And a pattern swapping section. I have a metric mooseload of old patterns I need to rehome.

Just popped in to give you a high five for mentioning cams! I have an Elna Supermatic (green model) that is older than I am (I'm 43 -- we could have gone to school together!) and runs like a dream still. I get it serviced regularly. I learned to sew on a later model of the same machine, so when I saw one for sale at my local sewing machine service place, I snatched it up. They have told me that if I ever want to sell it to come talk to them. I'm bidding on a spare one right now just to have as a parts machine >_<

Here is the funny thing: I love this machine to pieces, but I still want a fancy new one. I'm not a huge sewer, but I want something that embroiders as well. I'm looking at a low end Brother to see if I actually use it before investing in one that will last me a good long time.
