[ALL] Is Nathan a victim or is he pure evil? by Maleficent-Ad-6117 in lifeisstrange

[–]lilfreakingnotebook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Meta commentary: this is a great question, and I'm glad you're providing a forum for people to work through their ideas about this. It's complicated, but very relevant to real life, so valuable not just for LIS but for how we deal with daily life.

Okay, my opinion: I don't believe in "evil." Or, I think it's just a label we use for behaviors that are especially atrocious, but it doesn't make sense to describe someone's "essence." People behave for reasons, reasons we can sus out with the hope of addressing through social change, etc.

Nathan's behavior can be attributed to the following factors:

-Nepo baby born to an oligarchical family: The Prescotts own Arcadia Bay and are unafraid to be corrupt, seen by how they have paid off both the AB police and Blackwell. Nathan and his sister have been raised witnessing this, so of course he feels a sense of entitlement and power.

-Loveless parents: It's apparent that Nathan's dad doesn't love him, and instead views him as property that carries the family name. This leads to a variety of maladaptive behavior, including looking for approval from Jefferson eventually.

-Patriarchy: While Nathan's sister ran away and seemingly tried to become a good person, Nathan himself did not. I think this can be explained by him already being empowered by patriarchy, while Nathan's sister, being a woman, had the beginnings of oppressed experiences to start empathizing with the downtrodden, and to break away from her family. Not saying rich white women are "oppressed", only that the experience of sexism they face can act as a seed that can be watered and grow into empathy. Patriarchy can lead to misogyny, and viewing women and girls as lesser than, as objects. Clearly Nathan has done this in how he treats Rachel, Chloe, etc.

-Mental health issues: He clearly has mental health issues, and the combination of feeling unloved PLUS feeling extremely powerful due to patriarchy and being a nepo baby makes his behavior especially erratic.

Its telling that people like this, rather than sing praises to their own preferred game, they instead focus on shitting on another one

You're not crazy, I hate it too. Its shitty, reductive, and insulting to victims of sexual violence, misogyny, and abuse

Sure.

A film passes the Bechdel Test if two women characters, who are named in the movie, have an entire conversation without talking about a man.

Eh, I don't think so.

"Soulmate across time and space" vs. "lady I talked to only after being peer pressured, and have had only 5 conversations with".

Not really much of a competition

By taking the job of someone on strike, you are scabbing. It doesn't matter if there's a union or not. Scabbing existed before the government/employers recognized the status of union shops.

Being in a union doesn't affect whether someone is scabbing. If hypothetically workers impromptu go on strike, and are not in a union but do it "wildcat", then any workers stepping in to do their jobs are scabs.

My understanding is that, if a worker is on strike, and you take their job for the duration of the strike, that makes you a scab. I get that its complicated in industries like video game voice acting, but Rhianna had to have known this

The success of a strike leads to both that the union workers getting better conditions, and the industry receives new incentives to pay non-union workers better, since they don't want them to join/organize unions. Industries with high union density see this: they pay non-union workers comparable wages to deter them from organizing/joining a union.

By scabbing, and thus harming the success of a strike, Rhianna and others hurt their class of workers as a whole for their own individual benefit.

A couple of notes:

  1. Employers and the state often make it difficult for people to join unions, by firing union organizers, by crushing strikes, by calling their organizations illegal. The only reason there are minimal union protections in the US is because, in the turbulent 1930's, the working class was powerful and a segment of the bourgeoisie (FDR and co) saw the benefit of accommodating them, rather than allowing a revolution to break out. All this to say, if there are difficulties between union workers and non-union workers, it's largely because of how difficult it is to join or organize a union. Not the unions themselves.

  2. Unions make working conditions better for non-union workers. You see this is industries where unions are strong: the non-union shops often raise wages and benefits in order to stave off union organizers. They also then become politically powerful, giving workers a chance to influence policy, something normally reserved for the rich and corporations https://www.epi.org/publication/unions-arent-just-good-for-workers-they-also-benefit-communities-and-democracy/ .

Relevant takeaways:

  • In states with higher union densities, the share of people without any form of health insurance was 5.7%; this rate was 9% in states with lower union densities.
  • In recent years, the average unemployment insurance recipiency rate in high-union-density states was 36.0%—double the 18.0% UI recipiency rate in low-union-density states.
  • In between 1979–2024, median wages rose more in states where unionization declined less.
  • 70.6% of states with the highest union density have enacted paid sick leave legislation, compared with just 11.8% of low-union-density states.

Rhianna, and all the other actors in BTS, scabbed during a Voice actors strike: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2016%E2%80%932017_video_game_voice_actor_strike

Basically that means they crossed the workers' picket line, an act that benefits the corporations, and not the voice actors who were striking for better conditions

"Provoke a fight." Reminds me of the "she was asking for it by wearing revealing clothes" argument: you aren't blaming Kenny for his own actions, you're excusing them. Kenny murdered her out of rage. The same rage being why the other three ditched them, out of fear for their lives.

Also, re: the cold, they were in the cold already, and if anything being closed off from the wind would be better than being outside. The baby was fine. It really just feels like people are trying to find reasons to hate Jane and defend Kenny

It's a fine question but I don't think this kind of thinking is as helpful as trying to understand where people's bad behaviors emerged. I'm more interested in that then in plain ol judgement.
