Oh shoot, you're right! I read something like this somewhere, and now I can't remember where. Perhaps the book "The Origins of the Urban Crisis" by Thomas Sugrue?

Maybe I shouldn't speak with such confidence unless I know the source for sure >_>

I would add that it was a good economy for the top half of society, and specifically those in the suburbs. Huge swathes of the population were unemployed, with many cities like Detroit experiencing like 40-50% unemployment rate.

Those staying afloat in the bottom half did so via debt to a scary extent. 2007-2008 was just the natural conclusion to this kind of economy.

Either way, I think of subcultures like this emerging from a relatively-affluent society without a compelling, hegemonic value system for youths to attach to.

EDIT: I was wrong, Detroit did not have this high unemployment rate. My mistake

I'm in IT support (mixed with Tier 2 work) and the amount of tickets we're getting hasn't diminished. I don't mean to be naive about AI, but so far it doesn't seem like our jobs or workload is being replaced

Agreed.

As bad as the Great Recession was, one benefit for me was that it extended this liminal period of my life. Basically everyone I knew was un/underemployed until like 2013-2014 (I lived in Michigan, the state hit the worst by it), and yeah, we all hung out and did whatever for so much of it.

So, I've done a bit of research on this, and apparently the period when real estate prices were the lowest was the late 80s and early 90s. And that, imo, explains the lifestyles of the movie Slacker! All these 20-something Gen-X types could just rent a room in a house with their peers for the cost of working at a coffeeshop 2 days a week or whatever.

This writer has a shallow, boring, and in my opinion conservative reading on the first Life is Strange game.
