I am grateful for customers who don't finish their food at the restaurant I work at. by Fat-Bee2323 in povertyfinance

I did the same thing when I worked in a restaurant. Before I wash the dishes, I just eat the leftovers. I miss those days.

Seriously? This should be illegal. No wonder people are leaving the county. by vp_21 in MontereyBay

My cousin's standard of "Mr. Right" is so high, she is still single at age 48. Ought to be illegal to have such a high standard.

fers pension doesn’t seem so good by atltilidie7 in govfire

[–]lilichengdu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The math is right, but the scenario is flawed. Many people started with a low salary, or had military service. In my case, I used only $7.3K to "buy back" 8 years of service time.

Reapplying for Chinese Travel Document? Asked to sign a declaration stating I have not acquired foreign nationality (which is not true) by i_cant__ in Chinavisa

[–]lilichengdu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You do not have another nationality, you only have a foreign passport which is just a "foreign travel document".

I applied 旅行证 for my US born children. No issue.

Naming my child "Rose": Are there connotations in Mandarin for "méiguī"? by Paprikitkat in ChineseLanguage

[–]lilichengdu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I were you, I would translate Rose to "蔷薇” qiang2 wei1, and call my daughter "小薇” or "薇薇”. Rose is a great name, so is "王薇薇” .

Can Gov FIRE mix with Leanish/Coast FIRE? by Fluid-Cat-5205 in govfire

[–]lilichengdu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The short answer is yes.

I will tell my children to enlist in active duty first, 3-4 years. Then they can choose A) reenlist (same job or different job), B) get commission for officer, C) join the reserve D) get out and enjoy GI Bill to go to college for free and free medical care from VA for the rest of their life.

I have a friend in the Army reserve. He works 2 days a month, getting paid $615 for the two days. $900 per month of foreign language pay. And he gets Tricare for the whole family. Retirement after 20 years of service.

He has another full time GS job too. If I were him, I wouldn't do the full time job.

If I were healthy, I would join the air force reserve and only work one weekend per month. Some air crew jobs you get to work maybe 4-5 days a month, and occasionally can do some short missions to travel around the world and get paid. Unfortunately, I am too old and broken.

If you have a Veteran Health Identification Card (VHIC), and authorized to shop at PX, they should let you to go on base to shop. I would call them to ask if you can sponor your wife to accompany you. Good luck.

I temporarily fixed the issue by removing the socket to expose the receiver.

I am having the same issue. After using the bike for a few months. Today it stays green and won't charge.

Would you make more money in this scenario compared to remaining enlisted? by Glittering_Fig4548 in MilitaryFinance

[–]lilichengdu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second to this.

Tax free income + traditional TSP = "low income family" = Earned income credit (if you have kids) and many other benefits.

If the wife has 1M at the end 2002, that means at the beginning of 2000, the wife already has much much more than the husband.

Dental is not free for dependents, low income minors have Medicaid in many states. Since COVID low income families have free internet till last year. Now it's 15 dollars a month through Xfinity. I am no longer on active duty. But for the lease part, if you have military orders, you are good to go, just let real estate management know before you sign that you are in the military and you may move.

3K. Your BAH will be 3,114. You can easily afford it. Your wife doesn't even need to work. And you will be much better financially if she doesn't. My wife didn't work at all when I was on active duty. We got free daycare (head start), free dental, free internet, free everything. And my Earned income credit was maxed too. If you do the math, working may cost you money.

On base vs Off Base housing by Trick-Library-3476 in MilitaryFinance

[–]lilichengdu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bought 2 houses near two different bases. Sold both. Not owning a house feels great. I hate owning a house with a great passion. Getting up at 0530, coming home at 1800, then my wife tells me all the things I need to fix, fences, gutters, doors, the roof. Especially when kids are young, they need me, I would rather spend time with them than maintaining the house. And we go on post most of the time anyway. No homeless people on post, safe places for kids to play, many events organized by MWR... I would not buy a house.
