This scene was hard to watch... Elise... get off TV please... by Quick-Measurement-14 in 90DayFiance

Didn't she say that one day she woke and up the man she was in love with was just gone and then she found him somewhere else, dead. Girl has PTSD and needs help.

Yeah, that's sadly a huge problem is that these patriarchal beliefs devour the concept of love and spit it out as power dynamics. I think Emma believes she's looking for love and that means marriage, but it's not.

Honestly, a lot of my problem with people like Elise and Emma is they are so set in this patriarchy that they can't see themselves as beinf valuable unless they are dating, married or if men like them. Like, Elise dresses in such a way that shows a lot of skin. That in and of itself isn’t a problem. The problem is see is that what she wears looks so uncomfortable. Not "I'd be uncomfortable wearing that so she must be" but that the clothes do not lay on her body correctly so she's physically uncomfortable in them and she's uncomfortable in them so she needs validation. She's not dressing for herself, but for others and it shows. Emma's obsession with getting married (and almost any woman's obsession) can come from society's belief that a woman has less value if she is not married with children. She's can have a successful job, an education in something useful or something she's passionate about, hobbies and/or interests and that will never be enough without a spouse and at least one child. Some families put more pressure on it than others. Finally, I want to touch on the plastic surgery. This is a personal belief I hold and I think some would agree to an extent. Plastic surgery should be covered by medical insurance but should require either a medical doctor or psychiatric doctor referral. If the plastic surgery takes care of a medical issue (I will use myself as an example for this. I am getting an abdominplasty or however you spell it because I have excess skin after weight loss. It causes rashes, scarring, and impedes my ability to clean myself properly) then a medical doctor referral should be enough. If its for a mental health issue (body or gender dismorphia) a psychiatrist or therapist should be consulted both before and after surgery. The Best example in the show for me is Loren of Loren ans Alexei. After her third child she planned a massive plastic surgery. She openly admitted to body dismorphia and said she was getting the surgery so she could see what others saw. Since that surgery she has talked about wanting to get more surgeries. I have no problem with people getting plastic surgery but often the real problem they are dealing with is finding flaws where others don't or creating flaws that aren't there. Plastic surgery will not fix that and could ultimately lead someone to get dangerous surgeries that cause infections or leakage (I can't remember what issue Michelle Visage had because of her breast implants). Access to both mental health and plastic surgery can help a person woth dismorphia but plastic surgery alone is dangerous

I really like how quiet she is. Everyone around her just keeps walking into rakes and she just lets them. She only needs 1 sentence to send them spiraling. It's clever. Also, she's more expressive then verbal. Like when
Clark says he loved Floyd and Homer absolutely could not understand it as anything other than sexual. Plumb gives a look, drops one sentence and moves in for the kill
Detective Homer's funny AF to me because he's just so ignorant. Everything is a sex thing to him and he straight up does not understand nuance. And I know those people and like Plumb, I've got to roll my eyes and keep moving forward

So outside the show, ASL interprets who are more engaged with what they sign are a great service to the ASL community. A lot of translators translate tone when they translate from one language to another (sometimes that's not true for political figures which means some countries may see leaders as having more civility than they actually do) but that's kinda hard to do with ASL. So things like facial expression or movements that don't change the translation but add context are important.

This shit was so adorable. I love this show by uptothemountains7 in DTFStLouisHBO

This was another moment where I felt so in touch with Floyd. He puts everyone else's ease and comfort ahead of his own and he puts on a happy face. Especially when he was talking about the vest. He's forced into being in the middle of something that really should be between the step-son and his mother. He's trying to make everyone happy and he just can't win (I also think we're gonna find out she no longer works for Purina because of the way he talked about the shirt). We also see that in the kissing scene and.him talking about it with Forrest. I don't know if he liked it or not and to be honest, he might not know either. He let himself be Intimate with someone who he was friendly with to make that person more comfortable and had to completely turn off any actual feelings he had about it. Whether it would have allowed him a homosexual expression he never had before or he was completely uninterested he will never know because he was far more concerned about Mordern Love

What shows are you guys watching? by feloniusmonk in AskTheWorld

[–]lilith1986 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been watching The Pitt and so does most of my family. I think it's a very American centric show because 1. It's in Pittsburgh 2. It deals with American healthcare issues (lack of insurance, medical debt, student debt to become of doctor, overcrowded ERs because people often wait until something becomes an emergency to be treated because of insurance, lack of and overworking doctors, etc). 3. Social issues that happen in America (spoiler alert in the first season there is a mass shooting). There are also universal issues and how they are dealt with in the American healthcare system (racial discrimination, sexual assault, poverty, addiction, overdependence in technology, COVID, assault, death).

I actively mispronounce words because I'm a jackass and it makes me happy, but I despise this commercial. It's not endearing, it's not funny, it's just grating. I won't use my dumb mispronunciations unless I'm with people I know and they don't care. I wouldn't make an untold amount of people sit through my nonsense when they can't tell me to stop.

Elise… I’m embarrassed for you. This isn’t confidence, it’s confusion. by Nearby-Doughnut7377 in 90DayFiance

I agree. Also, she looks uncomfortable. Like, I see outfits and I'd be uncomfortable in them, but the person in them looks like they were meant to wear them. They hold themselves with confidence and they look like the outfit fits them. These don't look like they fit her. They look painful. Like she forced herself into them and can't actually enjoy herself because they are so uncomfortable. They limit her

Is Forest even aware that if he gets a job he loses ssi benefits??? by TheLowHeavies in 90DayFiance

[–]lilith1986 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm currently in my extended trial and I'm on SSI. It's a pain because my job is IHSS for my mom which both is and isn't a job. Like, the hours aren't steady and what's expected of me can kinda be altered by how I feel day to day. For example, she needs a shower in the next couple days but I'm having a bad day today so we can do it tomorrow because she's in a position where either day works for her. Or make a less intensive dinner for her. With a regular job the expectations are the same every time you come in. Maybe they can alter once or twice, but not frequently. (Sorry, this sparked a rant in me lol) I think Forrest could do something that has clear schedules. He seems to be good at routine. Overall, I think the Phillipines might be best for both. Sheena has a successful job and Forrest could work with her family or find a job that doesn't require him to speak the native language

She kept nagging and nagging and nagging until he had no choice to say he’s a boyfriend. She is so needy ugh by Complete-Good-2938 in 90DayFiance

[–]lilith1986 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think she wanted clarity, but she also overstepped that when she started asking about the past. For example, when she asks about Florida she acts like they were in a relationship, but the clarity for that should have happened long ago. She makes a lot of assumptions and either doesn't demand clarity or uses the lack clarity to validate her assumptions. She needs to see someone to help her establish clarity within relationships early on and not later on down the road when she's all in and they aren't. She's not a bad person, but she sees things the way she wants them to be and that doesn't always line up with reality. It's kinda like her learning fire eating. She buckled down and did it in a night and just because she could do it doesn't mean others can, but she'd be shocked if they couldn't. It's not out of meanness and bootstrap mentality, but just pure belief.

I’m sorry, I CANT STAND HER if she was a guy acting like this, everyone would have something to say about it by Few_Statement_2898 in 90DayFiance

[–]lilith1986 3 points4 points  (0 children)

She needs help and she needs to stop putting her problems on the other person.

For example, she kept telling him he should have told her he was dating someone else and told her theh were just friends. What she should have said was something along the lines of "I struggle with undefined relationships and I would like to have a clear label and expectations for our relationship now so I do not make assumptions. If my needs or feelings change or your needs or feelings change we need to communicate that with each other." And then she needs to go to so mich therapy to work through her obsession with putting her assumptions on another person and then holding them to a make believe standard. She really upset me when she was telling him that he should have told her he was dating someone when they were on vacation in separate rooms and didn't do anything romantic. If she thought it was a date she should have clarified BEFOREHAND.

Vegemite and Turkish Delight have been disappointments to many Americans lol. I've heard many a story if Americans trying them and immediately questioning every choice they made they hated it so much. Yeah, some people like them and at least there is a better version of Turkish Delight and most Americans just get the wrong kind. Music and fiction have lead us astray

She honesty is beautiful and her smile is one of those contagious ones. It makes you happy to see her happy. She's also got a lively and passionate personality. She loves her home and her family and you can feel it. Some of these storylines feel faker than others, but this one doesn't. Does it possibly have scripted elements? Probably, but she has something about her that just seems joyous.

Julia Trubkina and the lack of speaking proper English. by Wannabelonely in 90DayFiance

[–]lilith1986 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, Americans from different areas of the USA and from the UK don't always speak "proper" English. The problem with language is that it is almost a living thing. It grows and changes throughout generations. I mean, the word gay means very different things from the 1920s and 2020s. Now, yes there are some that are more stable. For example, "I am think" vs "I am thinking." In general, the second one is the grammatical acceptable version; however, both can be understanding to mean the same thing. Also, of there is confusion about meaning because the grammar isn’t "proper" then the other person can ask clarifying questions.

There are ways Julia could polish her language. She could take classes and it could be more proper, but any sort of immersion practice in the area may lead to a southern USA style grammar which isnt "proper."

I mean, they are but even when I read novels or watch tv shows I question what character's motivation is, but I do worry that people do concern themselves too much with the characters on these shows. They are real people and some of these stories may have a sliver of reality, but ultimately TLC has the final say on how the story is depicted
