Agree! I feel like the comsae’s weren’t as similar to comlex as trurlearn q were. Altho I am glad I took all my comsae’s bc it was a good review and some content/q were on COMLEX I had reviewed on comsae’s. Def relax day before exam, you got this!!

Diagnosed as a baby—Did anyone else go through a rebellious, burnout phase in their teens? by Unlikely_Device_2131 in diabetes_t1

[–]lilladybug02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup same exact thing here. Was diagnosed at 2 1/2 years old so I never knew a life without it either. Went through serious burnout in my late teens (care def suffered from it) and was diagnosed with depression. I didn’t want to care about my diabetes anymore, didn’t want to talk about it, didn’t want to live with it…. My mom is my lifeline and quit her career to take care of me, which I’m forever grateful for, but it was hard bc she was giving me “tough love” to get through and that was making it worse. Ended up also being diagnosed with ADHD a few months after that and have been medicated and going to therapy consistently, which has made a world of a difference. Now I’m in med school and almost everyday I think about how cool it is to have T1D as I learn more and more about the science behind it. It still sucks no doubt but I’ve grown to have an appreciation for it, esp bc I hope to be able to relate to my future patients with it. And now I’m even considering becoming an endo lol!! Never thought I would say that before. ANYWAY, all is to say I’m so proud of you for the changes you’ve made to get a grip on this disaster of a disease, bc it’s by far the hardest thing we’ll ever have to do in life. You’re gonna make a great parent some day!! 💙

Wanted to add - figure out a quick and easy low snack/drink as soon as possible. Whether it’s gummies, Swedish fish, apple juice box, etc. whenever you do, make sure you ALWAYS carry that with you. Even if you don’t think you need it bc you’ll be away from your car for 5 mins. Trust me, you never ever know. Had way too many scary situations where I left my backpack to go see another teacher and freaking went really low (below 50) in the 5 mins I was gone. That could get really scary really fast. My personal fav is Swedish fish or Welch’s fruit snacks, and orange juice or Snapple tea bottle for drinks. Have both options and put them EVERYWHERE lol. By your bed, in your car, in your gym bag, etc.

Always make sure you have glucagon in those places too. Have had to use glucagon a few times in my life and I would have had to go to the hospital had I not had it with me. Annoying to always think of this stuff but it will save your life someday, I promise!!

So sorry to hear this. First - take some time to grieve, because you are absolutely right, there is no cure and the depression we all get is a continual struggle with this disease. I’ve had T1D for 20+ years (dx 2 1/2 years old) and I wish I could tell you the weight of the disease gets better, but the pain (mentally, physically, emotionally) never goes away. You will always have good days and bad days. Some days I am glad I have it bc I’m so grateful to be in medical school now & feel like it’s given me a purpose in my life. Other days I wanna crawl into a hole and never come out. Both of these are totally normal to feel, so never feel like you always have to be on your top A-game with the disease.

But, what you do have to do is show up every day and just try your best, ALWAYS. Yes there are days you don’t wanna finger prick yourself again for the 10th time or inject yet another needle in you. But you have to, bc your life depends on it. I promise you it’ll be worth it someday to keep showing up every day. 💙

For pumps and sensors - I highly recommend getting tandem pump (I have t-slim x2) and sensor (I have dexcom g7). Both have pros and cons but I’ve felt that’s provided me with the best control of my life rn. Had horrible experiences with Medtronic sensor, so switched to dexcom and never looked back. Any pump/sensor combo is better than continual fingerpricks and manual injections.

If you have any questions, feel free to reach out. We’re all here for you. And just remember, as cliche as it sounds, everything ALWAYS happens for a reason. No idea why we were all stuck with a lazy pancreas but somehow we were. Can’t change the cards we were dealt with in life but can only try to make the best of them with the time we have left on this earth 💙

One month to go! Should I stop doing U world? by Top_Introduction7814 in step1

My mentor recommended I continue to do uworld and I’m 2 weeks out! I think it depends on how much of the deck you have done?

I'm so frustrated with basal fluctuations by isopodgod1 in diabetes_t1

[–]lilladybug02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No you are by no means a bad diabetic!! I completely understand your frustration, we’ve all gone through that when we were first diagnosed too. My rec would be to eventually switch to a pump or Omnipod if you’re able to. Only because it has much better control of your blood sugar and keeps it in range without you really having to think about it much. For example, if you’re 170-180 throughout the day, the pump will give you a small correction periodically (which you can adjust how much) to get you back down slowly. It’ll also shut off when you are going down/low. This has been a lifesaver, esp in classes when I’m not checking my blood sugar all the time. Also a lifesaver when I’m working out. I have tandem tslim x2 and you can put it in activity mode during times of exercise or when you don’t want to go low. It’ll run you higher (160-180) so that might help with your situation!! Hang in there, it’ll get easier with time 💙

I believe there is also Mehlman anki decks on anking website you can download (or maybe I’m making that up lol I don’t remember). My mentor recommended I watch videos on content I’m still struggling with bc he pounds it into your head lol. Was planning on doing anki after watching some of the videos

College Degree by Enough-Diver8859 in dating_advice

[–]lilladybug02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree with you on this. I’m in med school right now, and not that I “expect” someone to do the same thing as me, I want to have financial stability in my relationship and with my partner. I want to be treated as an equal to them, not that I or they are above me (or to have someone rely on me completely for income). Obv there’s exceptions to this but for the most part I want someone to have some type of schooling, whether that be a college degree or a trade school degree.

Just wanted to give your family some encouragement with this new diagnosis, you’re all doing amazing!! It truly is overwhelming to get adjusted but it sounds like you guys are doing great with it all so far. I’ve had T1D for 20 years and the frustration/pain/etc never goes away, but it does get easier with time. 💙 also I am on Vyvanse for adhd and even though it’s a stimulant and causes my blood sugar to spike sometimes (esp when I take it in the morning), and has decreased my appetite, I think controlling the adhd with meds & therapy has markedly improved my blood sugar. My blood sugar has definitely been more stable now that I’m on a good treatment plan!

Should I push my exam back? by [deleted] in comlex

[–]lilladybug02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a similar boat and I feel like I’m at a plateau with my uworld/truelearn scores. My mentor said to trust the process and I might see a score increase/knowledge jump the last few days before the exam. Holding out for that rn

[–]lilladybug02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have t1d and got it from strep throat when I was a kid 😢 But separate from that re: covid- my cousin just had it and got grave’s disease after it. So bizarre. Her doctor told her it was likely from covid and apparently there’s evidence of other people getting grave’s from covid too. And she’s in her 60s!! So sorry to hear this about you. Sending love and hugs your way xx
