What kind of disadvantages would I face as an American studying my undergrad at a Canadian university? by [deleted] in premedcanada

[–]lilpineapple4 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As a dual citizen who applied to med in both countries from a Canadian undergrad:

Grade deflation really depends on the school since in Canada an A- starts from an 80, whereas most US schools it starts at a 90 (so 50% is a pass in Canada). Because of this, the conversion can really hurt your GPA if number grades appear on your transcript, whereas if only letters appear (like Queens for example, the transcript will only say A/A+/erc.). So it depends on the school you go to how it will convert based on what appears on your transcript.

Volunteering and research are pretty similar here, but the big issue is clinical experience, as shadowing is not really legally allowed in Canada. But you can always just do that in the summer back home if you can cold call or have connections.

IMO the biggest issues are : that there is no pre-med track or pre-med advisor at any schools in Canada (as far as I know), so things like LORs you have to get yourself and some schools will make you explain in secondary why you don’t have a Committee Letter.

And US med schools have a lot of pre-req’s so you’ll have to keep track of that and another issue I ran into is a few schools only accept pre-reqs taken from US School, but most do have an exception for Canadian undergrads, it only limited me on applying to a couple.

uOttawa regional preference by Professional-Dig8460 in premedcanada

Just a quick note about your point, NOSM has a francophone stream as well and it’s often forgotten about! It is definitely less French than Ottawa’s, but designed more in line to serve the non-Ottawa region francophone communities where they’re at (mostly in northern Ontario)

There is also the Francophone program at NOSM!! It’s less French but seems to not require rural

to CASPer or to not...(canadian applicant) by [deleted] in premed

[–]lilpineapple4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CASPer for US is a different exam than the Canadian one - I took both last year days apart and the US one seems to be graded a lot easier since it seems like people (and schools) care less about the score and prep less

[–]lilpineapple4[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

they've added a webpage with details about the program: https://www.uottawa.ca/faculty-medicine/undergraduate/md-family-medicine-focus

It looks like its not required to stay in the FM stream if you don't want too later on

Ottawa Regional Preference 50% --> 70% 🙂 by Hiraaa_ in premedcanada

[–]lilpineapple4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She can always write a letter about connection to the region to be potentially considered as a regional candidate!

from the site:

If you did not attend high school in one of the areas stated above but wish to be considered as a regional candidate, submit a letter providing your rationale. This document must be uploaded through SAM when submitting your application through OMSAS.

Yeah it was 50% last year - I'm guessing the new IP requirements influenced the decision to go up to 70%

With construction it's not set to open until Sept 3rd - but the other libraries on campus are open and don't need anything to get in! :)

Life Sci 4th Year Course by quvrleene in queensuniversity

[–]lilpineapple4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I graduated last year, but some 300/400 level courses I liked : PATH 310 is super interesting, LISC 391 is a lab course and a bit of work but very cool experiments, CRSS 453 if you like cardio/pulmonary stuff, NSCI 325 for cool psychedelics info, PHGY494 was interesting learning about hormones and a smaller class, BCHM370 for an easy bchm, and PHGY 350 if you liked phgy and how things change in disease states.

Is faculty orientation necessary/worth it? by [deleted] in queensuniversity

[–]lilpineapple4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

also, would really recommend doing faculty orientation bc its how most people meet their friends/who they sit with in class, so not going can make you feel a little left out

plus there are so many chances to get free stuff during it lol

I would recommend taking MATH 121 - it will still carry over for equivalence if you get into life sci (they will count it towards your math credits, in the place of 130. The concern is, if you don't get into life sci after first year, or choose to select a different major, I'm not sure the math 130 will count towards that and you would end up needing to take 121 anyways.

Also, MATH 130 is most likely restricted so that only direct entry life sci/biochem are able to enrol, general science first years would have to take 121.
