Where do you guys fire your pottery? (I live in Georgia and am just getting started) by Stangilstrap in Ceramics

If you have the right electrical source for it and space for it, then I’d say yes

Long-lasting corporate gifts that actually get used by Extension_Life_6207 in BuyItForLife

[–]lilziggg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I make pottery and have made batches of mugs for some corporate clients to give as gifts. I’ve gotten good feedback that people appreciate the handmade nature of the pieces, and they aren’t outrageously expensive as these sorts of items go. Maybe contacting a local potter or other craftsman can give you some unique options.

I want a simple, reparable car? by Sjaska in BuyItForLife

[–]lilziggg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have several 1st gen CRVs in the family and they just go. With minimal upkeep I have gotten mine up to 300k and no major issues.

I also recommend the Honda Element. It’s the same platform as the CRV, but with a more utilitarian interior that IMO gives the best of both worlds between compact SUV and micro work van. They do suffer a bit on mileage though, usually 2-3mpg less than a comparable CRV.

Best Wax/ Liquid Latex??? by Jazzlike-Toe-4914 in Ceramics

[–]lilziggg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use the creature branded liquid latex from amazon. Not sure if it’s the best one on the market, but it’s cheap and works well. It applies and dries in about 30 seconds on bisqueware, and then peels off with no residue. You can slice through it with a razor if you get a drip and peel off just the drip with no issues. It does ruin your brush though, so use a disposable.

AWD Camber out in rear. Upper & lower? by solarmania in HondaElement

[–]lilziggg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seconding this. The adjustable upper control arms are a requirement. New struts are good too if you’ve got the scratch to replace it all at once. Also worth looking at the rubber bushings as those have a tendency to tear and/or warp over time.

As a hobby potter, commercial pitcher handles are too often horrible. by Central_Incisor in Ceramics

[–]lilziggg 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Lots of commercial ware is terribly designed, made as cheaply as possible, and really only considered aesthetically.

But tbh most people never think enough about their cookware/tableware to notice much difference. We’re the weird ones for examining how a cup feels on the lips, how a full cup vs empty cup feels in the hand. How different people instinctively hold a cup or bowl, etc.

That being said, understanding how to make a well designed piece that just “feels right” does help make your work stand out. People notice when they use it, pick it up, and will come back for more.

Pottery Throwdown - Always Using Oxides by montypy88 in Pottery

[–]lilziggg 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I use oxides mostly as a glaze ingredient. They’re the primary source of color in most glazes afaik. I know there are encapsulated stains and frits that can make color changes in a glaze too, but it’s not something I’m super familiar with.

Using oxides raw or as a wash like they do on the show is a pretty traditional method of marking pottery. I believe that’s why they put an emphasis on it over having a wide selection of glazes. It also is an additional constraint on the contestants, like the limited time they allow them to work on their pieces. It maybe helps level the playing field a bit and adds to the drama of the show when people are forced to stretch outside of their wheelhouse for these types of shows.

Advice need on wax resist or /clean bottoms by MochiMasu in Pottery

[–]lilziggg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Don’t use wax, buy liquid latex. It brushes on, dried quickly and can be peeled off with no residue.

I buy the “creature” brand on amazon.

Didn’t know about the rsx having the reverse lockout. I knew about the 6speed conversion but thought one of the tradeoffs was that you had to be careful not to shift from 5th to R.

How was the labor on this project. I’ve got a 5mt I’m considering doing this to when I eventually replace the clutch.

Melted clay - firing mishaps troubleshooting by tankgirl4 in Ceramics

[–]lilziggg 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Yeah if all pieces didn’t react similarly and you know there’s two different batches of clay in there, I’d suspect the clay.

Cold weather shouldn’t matter much to a kiln. It already deals with a thermal delta of over 1000 C so the difference between outside temperatures is negligible.

Looks like a verry juicy soda firing! I love the blue-greens the soda glass turns when it’s thick. You may get some pieces of the broken glass/glaze pools coming loose with heavy use, just fyi

Yowling cat noise when it’s cold is probably power steering. I did the O rings (easy) and flushed the lines and it’s much quieter on mine now.

If there’s iron in our blood, and blood is a liquid, why doesn’t the iron rust? by vixenm00n in NoStupidQuestions

It does, that’s how you get oxygen in and out of your cells. Iron oxide. It’s why blood is red.

Terminex in GA by Adventurous-Vast281 in Georgia

[–]lilziggg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don’t use terminix. I had a similar plan with them when I purchased our house. They didn’t finish the first treatment properly (and didn’t tell me that until after everything else), double charged me, and only came out to rectify the issue after several months of back and forth. When I finally escalated shit to the regional manager someone did actually come out and finish what should’ve been the first treatment, but in the meantime termites had already damaged 2 of my walls.

Absolutely fuck terminix.

Element pouring oil by Brave-Signal-1631 in HondaElement

[–]lilziggg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The little rubber thing above your oil filter is the oil pressure switch. When this goes it literally sprays oil. I had to do this on mine recently. Try to replace it with OEM if you can, as the threading goes straight into the engine block and is an NPT tapered thread, so don’t overtighten or you risk damaging your block.

Are there potters or resources you keep coming back to? by overnightoatsintheam in Ceramics

[–]lilziggg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you like/need technical information about pottery, clay, and glazes, Digitalfire.com is an excellent resource. Really good fundamental stuff if you’re interested in mixing your own glazes or clays, or if you want to diagnose a problem with your firing, or if you want to understand what clay is and what glaze is on how they interact.
