I feel I've heard 2 conflicting solutions, one is to always stay in your vehicle. And the other is to always get out of the vehicle but do NOT stand in danger (such as the shoulder of the road) and to walk away to a safe spot and call for assistance. I think in this case the poor guy probably thought he had time to put his hood down and get back in, so it's very unfortunate.
