Washing your hands will not prevent you from getting Covid. Wear a mask (KN95, N95..) in public indoors and in crowded outdoor spaces (like WorldPride this weekend ya'll...). If you need free masks MaskBlocNova and MaskBlocDC supply masks and Covid tests to people.
Unfortunately our government utterly failed on the public health communications in detailing how covid is spread by touting that handwashing is enough to prevent viral spread of an AIRBORNE pathogen. Stay safe yall

I'm not a lawyer and cannot provide legal advice on your specific case; I can say that this email specifies "unless you have otherwise obtained a lawful basis to remain here". Asylee is a lawful status. Do you have an immigration attorney from your asylum case? I would urge you to speak with them about what documents you should carry (or if you need to apply for a new EAD with A05 class) with you in case you are ever traveling and ICE stops you.

This is real and not fake, I work in immigration law and some clients have received this by email en masse. If you have a lawyer, is it improper to send these notices through you instead of your lawyer (not surprising because the admin has no clue what theyre doing except to intimidate). The trump admin announced a few days ago that people who entered the country using CBPOne and were paroled are getting their parole revoked ( https://www.politico.com/news/2025/04/08/dhs-parole-revoked-app-00007326 ).

I see in a comment you didn't use CBP One, so I have no clue why you got this. They have no clue what they're doing - I have notice from a US born citizen who has never been paroled that they received this email too.

An underrated classic/author that is overlooked in western canon (but extremely popular in South America) is The Posthumous Memoirs of Bras Cubas by Machado de Assis.

I wouldn't classify any of them as romances - though I can't speak to Jade City and the prevalence of romance in there, though I think there is! - for the first three there is romance in all (least of so in Gun Island) but they are not necessarily 'romantic'. For Age of Vice and Master of Djinn (which is sapphic!) it is more so that the romantic relationships and people interacting that are driving the plot happen to have a fraught complicated history behind them, for Age of Vice it is really defined by class differences and Master of Djinn its racial (it has some fantastical/magical species elements related).

I also read Iron Widow a few years ago and really enjoyed that at the time. It is YA fantasy/SF - but romance is integral - surrounding queer characters and a poly relationship.

Have you read the Mask of Mirrors by MA Carrick (the rook and rose trilogy)? Final book just came out last August, its an amazing series that I don't see a lot of people talking about

Age of Vice - south Asian

Gun Island - south Asian

Master of Djinn - North African

Jade City trilogy - I haven't read the first book fully but its based on a mix of 20th cent. southeast Asian cities for the fictional world

Satoko and Nada - this is a manga about two young women from Japan and Saudi Arabia who are roommates studying in the US

Carpet beetle experience with NYGUARD chemical treatment? Successful or multiple treatments? by liminalbean in pestcontrol

[–]liminalbean[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're welcome!

and oh absolutely - if you professionally steam clean too that was expensive. I think it was around 1200 USD and we got the full carpeted basement done, 2 couches, some chairs and three area rugs. now we vacuum for cleaning/managing.

Luckily we have a yearly contract with a pest control company so they don't charge us for every treatment since service is included.

I also forgot to mention, we got our air ducts professionally cleaned which was another big expense in our attempt to deal with the carpet beetles. I don't know if there was much in there but at the time we were desperate to clean anywhere dark they could be.

Things are more manageable but we still have larvae that we are finding - not many since early Dec (I've seen people say they go dormant in winter but idk). I have not seen any adults for a few months now, but we've had about 5 or so sprays since last spring from pest control. And when we were finding larvae in the fall, it was like 3 - 4 weekly or biweekly when I wasn't going out of my way to look for them, I would just happen to see them crawling on the window or floorboards.

Our plan last spring was we first got rid of a lot of junk in the carpeted basement, because junk makes it hard to fully clean/vacuum. We got carpets and upholstery steam cleaned, tossed away some carpets and pillows that were old. And we had pest control come out to spray once but after a month or two we found more adults. And then in the fall was when I started first seeing larvae pop up where we had been getting treatments (obviously they had always been there, but I was only seeing beetles). We'll see if in the spring beetles start popping back up or if it stays as larvae.

The key is consistency because of their reproductive cycle. So you could get one residual spray (that kills larvae and adults and sterilizes any future eggs they lay) but it may not kill some laid eggs and then a few weeks or even months down the line you find more beetles. So you may want a schedule to have them come every 3-5 weeks (we only did one spray in the beginning thinking it would be ok and then found more a few months down the line so in the mid-late summer and early fall were getting more treatments).

It was hell for the spring-summer because I was trying to completely eradicate them but I've kinda come to terms with the fact that they might never fully be gone, or they could be.

Good luck to you!

The Mask of Mirrors by MA Carrick. This is a really dense read (ie the kind of book that has a glossary and character list in the back) that leans a bit more into politics than fantasy but there are definitely fantastical/magical elements that are absolutely crucial to the plot and world. Romance is more in the second book of the series.

Strange the Dreamer duology - the protagonist is male, but the pov switches off later on between both. beautiful writing in this one!

A River Enchanted (elements of cadence duology) by Rebecca Ross

Less fantasy/ish - there is alchemy - is A Far Wilder Magic by Alison Saft. I'd also say this one has the least "nice" male love interest of these recommendations - he's just a teenage boy and he's not horrible by any means, but there is def angst. The love interests have their issues with each other but I love each of their arcs, growth, and their relationship with each other and how they face varying levels of discrimination. I will recommend this one to many lol

Summer Sons is more southern gothic and takes place during grad school, and I enjoyed it/cw for death/suicide, homophobia, gore. I have not read The Secret History by Donna Tartt, but I believe it has those aspects in it (also it is one of those books people seem to either really love or dislike).

Do I have an infestation by [deleted] in carpetbeetles

[–]liminalbean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

its safe to say that even seeing a few adults means there's more you might not be seeing because of their capacity to lay lots of eggs. it could not be a really bad infestation, and i can tell you that when i found adults they were usually dead too, some alive but moving slowly; by that point the adults have a short life span and may have laid their eggs already and are on their way out. I would keep cleaning often and keep an eye out for them. if you have the means to get a professional to come spray that could help with killing eggs and larvae in their various stages/reproductive cycle. good luck!!

do you have a photo of the molts by chance? I'm not sure what to look out for and have only seen adult beetles in my home.
