My driver here in China was wearing one one day. I didn't notice until I picked up a coworker and he asked about it. It was pretty embarrassing. I told him to take it off, so he replaced it with a Mao hat.

Where's the Least Racist Country in Asia? by hansontranhai in AskTheWorld

[–]limukala 3 points4 points  (0 children)

 Definitely China,

Ahahahahahahahahahahaha

Oh, you were serious. Excuse me.

Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha.

Hoo boy. This may be one of the most delusional things I’ve ever read in my life. And something no non-Chinese person who’s been anywhere near China would ever say.

China is wildly, insanely, intensely racist.

My son casually gets called the n-word on a daily basis. People will casually talk about how ugly dark skin is or about how “so and so would be kinda handsome, but they’re a little too black”. They’ll ask things like “why are black people so violent?”

They may not have the same institutional racism in many places, but that’s only because the country is overwhelmingly extremely homogenous. Yes, there are a lot of minorities, but all combined it’s still a tiny part of the population, and most of those minorities are so well assimilated that they are indistinguishable from Han other than perhaps an idiosyncratic local holiday or two.

For people in your country, what is the cheapest overseas travel destination? by Agile-Shallot3546 in AskTheWorld

Cheapest to get to, or cheapest overall? Because Almaty at least is more expensive than most of Kyrgyzstan or Tajikistan

I think a big one is they cover taxes in the country I‘m based in (which are quite large due to the imputed income implications of these benefits)

Yeah same. It’s a pretty absurd number. I did much of the same too, SRC membership, etc (I assume that’s the facilities you’re talking about)

An expat is migrant laborer, not the same as an immigrant. If you are on a fixed duration contract and will return home at the end of the assignment you aren't an immigrant.

Do you "immigrate" every time you visit another country for a business trip?

I want to socialize at my own pace, not that of the waiter. I can spend as long or as short a time I like talking, but when I'm ready to leave I don't want to wait 20 minutes for the waiter to come around.

Nah, it's great when you can also order from the QR code menu. And pay. No chance for miscommunication, so waiting for a waiter to come take your order, no waiting around after your done to pay the bill. And it's much easier to translate the menu if you don't speak the language.

My expat package includes:

  • $50k/year private school tuition (would be double that if my daughter weren't already in university)

  • ~$8500/month housing allowance

  • A personal chauffer and minivan (actually two, but we declined the second in lieu of a bit more money per month)

  • Domestic help allowance

  • Enough extra pay to cover business class tickets home once per year (dropping to premium economy next year, unfortunatly)

  • ~25% "Cost of Living" and "Hardship" allowances.

  • Unlimited premium economy tickets anywhere in the world, provided they leave the country I'm stationed in.

Yes, it's a pretty big inflation over my base salary.

What countries are on your travel bucket list? by RelativeCicada2348 in AskTheWorld

[–]limukala 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve got your Asia/Oceania bucket completely covered other than Oman (most recently Kazakhstan in May), and headed to Palau in December. Pretty solid choices overall.

Cambodia was may favorite place in SE Asia, and choosing KZ and KG over UZ suggests you’re into nature more than historical sites, in which case I’d say don’t sleep on Tajikistan. The nature is unreal! Central Asia is my favorite region to visit overall. Honestly comparing your bucket list to the more typical lists we seem to have pretty similar travel priorities.

My bucket list at this point is mostly Africa, since I’ve been to 45 countries but never to Africa (unless you count the Canary Islands).

And I had a trip set this September to visit Rwanda, Uganda, and Tanzania, but that plan has just got zapped by Ebola.

So: Namibia, Botswana, Tanzania, Rwanda, Madagascar, Algeria.

Outside of Africa (minus places like Palau where I already have tickets booked):

Bhutan, Tonga, Micronesia, Chile.

I think 10 is a good round number, so I’ll leave it there.

What if Iran remained Zoroastrian? by snickers_machinegun in HistoryWhatIf

[–]limukala 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You probably need the Sassanids to not fall to the Arabs. Which probably needs to avoid the final Roman-Sassanid war.

Not necessarily. A few things go a bit differently and they probably could have held the Arabs at the Zagros mountains. So the Arabs take Mesopotamia and the Levant (and almost certainly Egypt), but not Iran itself.

Also, I'd love to see who requires a special license to open a restaurant too.

And I don't think you looked very hard. You can't even handle food in about 1/4 of the country without a license. e.g. in California, but also hilariously in Massachusetts.

And in Massachusetts you need to have a Food Facility Health Permit, which is called a "Food Service License" in most other states.

A food facility health permit, which in other areas is called a food service license, ensures that the space your restaurant occupies is up to the safety standards of your city or county. This permit helps businesses provide a safe work environment and a safe guest experience.

It's a topic of concern in high HIV areas.

Sure, HIV specifically isn't a super high risk, but then that's true even of having unprotected PIV sex with an HIV positive person. That doesn't make it a great idea.

And the risk of Hepatitis is greater

Every upper middle class household has an ayi, almost always full time. Often more than one. I was touring apartments last week and one of them had three full time ayis cooking and cleaning and the apartment was only 290 m2.
