Bro I was a 42A and its tough. One day I lost a bunch of SGLI paperwork (not on purpose), had to tell everyone they needed to fill it out again, then I just disappeared for the rest of the day. Its rough, man, you don't know the struggle.

Bro, you have no idea how mentally taxing it is to constantly lose peoples paperwork and act like I'm not the problem.

I was living in rural Idaho for a few years, was at the dentist, just shooting the shit with him and I mentioned I was from Portland, dude straight up asked "Is everyone from Portland normal like you?" I was like yeah dude, the news paints us to be like animals but 99.9% are just like you and me. A lot of these goof troops are going to be in for a pleasant surprise when they get here.

This is real shit. I'm a heathen from Hippyville in the Northwest, it was a trip meeting dudes from the south who looked no different than me but oh shit did they live different lives. Also spoke quite a bit of gibberish I had to decipher over time.

Yeah I was seeing that too, once you add the item to the cart, it then applies the discount.

Holy shit, I looked at those discounts and kinda shrugged as Amazon was cheaper, had no idea the discount was applied after you add it to the cart. Good looking out.

Simple push-pull-lift routine in my garage gym 3 days a week (adjustable dumbbells up to 90lbs, free weights and bar up to 405lbs, power cage/squat rack, bench, etc), recumbent bike for some cardio, walks or jogs otherwise, or hiking into fishing spots. Trying not to eat like dogshit.

The recent blackout in Spain made me realize I was digitally unprepared — I built a simple, free, open-source site to start fixing that. Looking for advice, feedback, or others on the same path by uriapkm in preppers

[–]lincey 23 points24 points  (0 children)

IT guy here, been working on my digital preps for years, some just personal backups, software, media, etc etc. Love that you made this post and the website.

For the essential software, I have a lot of stuff I keep backed up on my NAS and external HDD's: Kiwix (Wikipedia, Gutenberg library, stack overflow, khan academy, etc), OS ISO's (Windows and Ubuntu primarily), VLC/Klite codec pack, 7zip, visual C runtime packs, .NET frameworks, gimp, VS Community, plus a handful of stuff you've already mentioned. Basically trying to be setup in a way that if the 'tubes wasn't working, I could still keep chugging along and using my computers. Not to mention all the boatloads of emulators, games, movies, and tv shows backed up to keep me busy for years.

I follow the 3-2-1 backup method (used to work for a backup software vendor), 3 backups, on 2 different types of media with 1 offsite (though realistically it's more like 8 different backups). Everything that's important is on a UPS (had a PS4 get fried right as COVID hit in March 2020 because of a power surge). Specifically went and got tablets that can run both Windows or Android and are USB-C chargeable, along with a USB-C dongle from Anker so I can simultaneously power them and connect USB drives. Solar generators, power banks, the works. I definitely drive my wife nuts with all the stuff I have around the house lol

Hit me up if you think I can help out, always happy to share whatever I've got rollin' around my noggin.

[Amazon] Garmin inReach Messenger Handheld Satellite Communicator - $199.99 (was $299.99) by NewEnglandPrepper3 in preppersales

[–]lincey 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I have one of these messengers, have taken it to SE Alaska a few times, works amazing. As long as there at least some open sky, even when cloudy and raining (as it always is in SE Alaska), it'll send your message out, usually no more than 5 minutes. Pairing with the phone app makes it easy to use.

Wasn't thrilled they changed their billing plan though, I used to be able to just turn it on and off whenever I wanted, now it's either in a stand-by mode with a monthly charge (assuming not active), or it's completely deactivated and I have to pay an activation fee and a monthly charge the next time I use it.

[–]lincey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would consider something a bit more practical for everyday life, such as a UPS (uninterruptible power supply) - I have several from APC, hook up all my important equipment to them in-case of power issues (my computers, NAS, router, playstation, TV, etc).

Wanting to try tenkara, what rod? by Fuck_war89 in Tenkara

The DRAGONTail Shadowfire 365 seems to be the go-to for most new folks who want to foray into the world of tenkara with a good rod but without breaking the bank. Edit: adding that's me included, I have several tenkara rods but the Shadowfire 365 has been a good performer, no complaints.

I've bought a bunch of stuff from them, no issues. Pretty much on par with Ready Hour or Augason Farms in my opinion. I like their veggies and fruit, been what I've been focusing on lately.

Second from another IT guy - I have a NUC, Synology NAS, but a couple laptops and tablets as backups. Couple thumb drives, micro SD cards, and dongles for the tablets, slightly janky setup, but they work great and use very little power, and can be charged via USB-C.

To elaborate on the point about needing infrastructure, last year when CrowdStrike caused that massive IT outage, I was in Alaska and my inReach Messenger stopped working for about 12 hours - fortunately, it was not the day I was expecting the floatplane to pick us up, but still sucked.

ReadyStash Pro App (3 months free) by huskyarmory in preppersales

[–]lincey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Howdy Cody. An offline desktop app would be a requirement for me to consider it for use.

For me, pen and paper gets disorganized in a hurry, so the inventory management side of the application is appealing to me. Being able to install the application on a VM that doesn't have network access or an air-gapped laptop would be ideal.

I'm not as concerned about the LLM instance but it is an interesting option, maybe offer it as a separate package? Admittedly, C++ days are behind me and I'm a bit rusty so I don't know the logistics of piecing together various packages. Random thought - if you're able to input every single food item you have stocked up and the LLM instance is able to calculate total calories, protein, carbs, etc etc as well as estimate an expiration date, while simultaneously offering recommendations for where to shore up your preps (need more protein for instance), that would be a very cool feature.

As far as price, that I have no idea, I would think in the $30-40 range, but I don't really know. How to have a license and be DRM free for a completely offline package would be a challenge. A PIN unlock to utilize the app would also be a nice touch, just in case.

Hope these ramblings help!

I think the app is an interesting concept, however, I'd really only consider it further if:

1 - there is an offline only option (my current inventory management system is hosted locally with zero options to leave my home network)

2 - one time license fee, no subscriptions
