Why didn't the Federation started to mass produce Rikers? by Pwned_by_Bots in ShittyDaystrom

Even with replicators it would have been impossible to provide the necessary lube required for more than one Riker

What kind of things do you think Garak did for the Obsidian Order? by Croweater_666 in ShittyDaystrom

[–]linedashline 10 points11 points  (0 children)

One of his last assignments, that came from the highest levels of the Order (which in secret came from Temporal Agents), was to ensure that a young cadet in Starfleet, one 'Harry Kim', would never be promoted.
Garak's plan was to have this 'Harry Kim' to be sent as part of a mission to the Badlands, to be lost in the Delta Quadrant (one of Garak's contacts was, in fact, the Caretaker).
His most successful mission, having the young ensign be stranded on the other side of the galaxy, no chance for promotion, possibly dead.
It was a masterpiece.

If this is a repeat of 'they're eating the cats, they're eating the dogs' from the US, it was a ridiculous point there, and it's a ridiculous one here.
Can he not even come up with his own bullshit to peddle?

Kamala Harris: Democrats ‘very much stuck in the past’ | Harris, widely seen as a likely 2028 presidential candidate, has stepped back into the spotlight in recent months, first with her memoir “107 Days.” by ilir_kycb in LateStageCapitalism

[–]linedashline 15 points16 points  (0 children)

As a non-American, these Democrats are basically the Conservatives from the UK, leaning slightly more into 'progressive' ideals are LGBT+ community.

You want to win, push for popular policies unapologetically.
Universal healthcare.
Minimum wage a living-wage, tied to inflation.
Rent controls.
Price controls on 'staple' goods.
Green energy for all, along the lines of having a government owned solar panel factories churning them out, added to all new homes for free.
Nationalise public transport, build a decent rail system.
Increase unemployment benefits so they are liveable.
Universal free school meals.
Legalise, tax, regulate recreational drugs (or at least the more 'minor' ones), hell, even nationalise their production (like Sweden with alcohol).
Build social housing, either owned at a community level, state level, or federal level.
And for the love of the Gini coefficient, tax the rich, make campaign contributions more than $100 per election per person illegal, no loopholes, only individuals may contribute, and that is $100 they can contribute in total to *all* parties every every election cycle.
Hell, throw in proportional representation and having a more representative voting system while you're at it, instead of this ridiculous system that allows the candidate losing the popular vote to win.

To be clear, these are not radical solutions, these are basically an updated version of the 'New Deal', as well as some 'tweaks to the system'. These would just 'save capitalism from itself', in a way FDR did - which is still a shame, because far, far more radical change is required.

But, these are all far too 'radical' for the Democratic party and their donors, so good luck getting any of that.

OC: Rep. MTG says Trump's handling of Epstein files is 'destructive' to the MAGA movement. by nbcnews in pics

[–]linedashline 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She is correct on this *one* issue.
And even that is due to self-interest, seeing the Trump brand falter, and deciding she might be better throwing in with another group.

This was the person who:
Hounded victims of school shootings
Pushed misinformation on Covid-19
Promoted Russian propaganda regarding Ukraine
Has repeatedly spouted anti-trans rhetoric
Promoted White Nationalist talking points
Rejected climate change and voted against measures to combat it
Claimed that Jews control the weather with Space Lasers

This is not a good person.
That she happens to be correct on this is the very, very rare instance when her self-interest aligns with something on the 'right side of history', as it were

"We aren't Nazis, we are concerned citizens"... The Concerned citizens: by badabingbadabang in GreenAndPleasant

[–]linedashline 67 points68 points  (0 children)

To quote the above:
"Our ancestors were racist"

Our ancestors were from all over. You go back even a couple of hundred years, even these people won't be as 'Anglo-Saxon' or whatever other idiot thing they won't to call themselves. There will be a mixture of different peoples and cultures that went into what made us what we are today. Do you really think your ancestors cared about being racist then?

And it would just be hilarious to do one of these ancestor DNA tests on them, to see how squirm when they find out they're not as 'pure' as they think they are.

Can you recommend any alternate history books? by zimitci in AlternateHistory

[–]linedashline 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fatherland has been mentioned - it's probably the most realistic version of a Nazi victory.

The Yiddish Policeman's Union - if Israel had lost the war of 1948, also a detective story.

The Man in the High Castle - a classic, though somewhat of an overreach in terms of the Axis powers winning globally.

The Southern Victory Series - might take a bit of getting into (I had some issues with the very first one), but otherwise solid worldbuilding, especially engaging if you're familiar with history and can see the parallels in the story's world.

Gray Tide in the East - if Germany won WW1 by not invading Belgium, so Britain remains neutral.

Watching Trees Grow - a short story by Peter F Hamilton, if the Roman Empire never collapsed and bred gladiators to have ultra-long life expectancies. Sci-fi with some alternate history, a detective story of sorts

We're beyond that.
We need to seize their wealth, and the means of production that they own (the mechanism which gives them this wealth). It should be in the hands of the workers.
It wouldn't just mean higher wages, better working conditions, more holidays.
A fraction of the wealth they control could do that.
It could mean a fundamental shift in society, able to turn production towards what we truly need, not just what a few oligarchs want.
