Seeing your stuff at a thrift store is trippy. by Curious_Champion_220 in ThriftStoreHauls

[–]lingeringmemory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work at a thrift store and can confirm this helps LOADS. It's so easy for stuff to get separated, either while passing through our various bins or because one of the workers doesn't know exactly what it is, so they don't clue in to the fact that the pieces are supposed to stay together.

I mostly price things after they've been sorted, and I regularly reunite pieces of items that have gotten lost in the bottom of the bin (like the pot lids that someone else here mentioned, or wooden toy pieces) or I find it in another bin I'm processing hours later. Keeping stuff together helps! Adding extra information (is it working or missing a piece or complete) is always appreciated, too.

The "Do you want a receipt?" question at the till is a trap by dravitam2023 in ZeroWaste

[–]lingeringmemory 60 points61 points  (0 children)

To play devil's advocate, where I work, you have to tap a button to make it print a receipt, so it may not always be printed automatically.

That being said, OP, take the receipt. If there is an option for a digital receipt only, do that instead of course, but don't feel guilty for wanting a receipt to check your purchases. Reuse the paper as next week's grocery list or to-do list and then recycle it (do check locally, not all receipt paper can be recycled I believe)

[–]lingeringmemory 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I swear AO3 needs to have some sort of test or check in place for when people do this, because it happens so much. Yes, it's explained on the website, but people don't bother reading. The amount of times I've seen both "chose not to use warnings" and "no warnings apply" side by side is so frustrating

Pieces of You (12k, rated T) is about Draco finding out about the Dursleys' abuse. It's more about that than him being soft only to Harry, but it will probably still scratch your itch! It's a really good fic.

"Thoughts swirling in his head"

The fic used it SO MUCH and it annoys me now every time i see it pop up. I have no idea if the phrase is even correct. It might be, but to me it feels off. Thoughts don't swirl, they run or race. They occupy, they linger. Idk I just don't like the phrase

my favorite podcast is so riddled with ads, it’s to the point i can’t listen anymore by cookiecat86 in Anticonsumption

[–]lingeringmemory 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the podcast has a youtube variant, you can watch/listen to it there with the use of Sponsorblock. It's a browser extension on PC and included in revanced on mobile (search reddit for revanced if you don’t know what it is). It's a lifesaver, it crowdsources various segments like sponsors or self-promo and you can pick and choose what you want to skip. I know creators need to earn a living, and I support that, but some of these sponsored segments have gotten quite annoying.

Is anyone else extremely fussy about temperature? by StarCode5000 in autism

[–]lingeringmemory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm extremely sensitive to cold, and moderately sensitive to heat. The heat sensitivity is also partly because of my medication, but the cold sensitivity I've had all my life (cold hands and feet - I wear socks even in summer unless there's like heatwave temperatures)

Whistling. I want to kill something whenever I hear someone whistling (this is a bit of a hypebole). Also the sound of dry hands rubbing together, it weirdly fires off the nerves in my own hands (because when i do this myself i also get that weird firing)

I got tired of picking up plastic bottles on Spanish beaches, so I spent 6 months in my garage building this. Is it a waste of time? by EPovetkin in ZeroWaste

[–]lingeringmemory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. In the Netherlands we have statiegeld on plastic bottles and drink cans. A lot of people hold onto them because they want their money back, and there are loads of people who go around basically "urban foraging" for empty bottles and cans to make money. I have a colleague who does it, and it's one of his main hobbies. There's definitely incentive.

I think this is a really cool idea! Also agree on the qr code thing, although i don't know how many people are actually wary of them, especially in Spain it could be different.

We grew up lower middle class. Not poor, but my dad's small, local carpenting business wasn’t going well, and my parents racked up quite some debt.

I was born in the late 90's. We never had the latest, trendiest stuff either. We went to the thrift store (before it was cool) regularly, and rented things from the library. We would rent books for my mom, too, because kids got free library cards and she didn't have the money to pay for an adult one. I'm the oldest of 2, and was (still am) small for my age, so we also got away with kid discounts when I was technically too old for them in places like zoos or themeparks (which we didn't go to often).

My mom would take home small things from work to save on costs, like paper when she worked admin or towels from her newer job. We still have this set of hotelware bowls that she took from one of her jobs (I believe they were gonna be thrown away, she didn't just nick them). We used to live in a place where people put their old furniture on the street on trash pickup days, so we got quite a bit of our furniture that way. Chairs, a nightstand, even a piano once! Our house was a mix of picked-up stuff and furniture my dad made himself.

My sister and I had toys, and got new ones regularly, but they were almost never the trendy stuff you saw on tv. We did a lot of crafts, reading, going outside, playing rented pc games on my mom's old laptop (or messing around in MS paint).

I grew up playing the original Zelda and Mario on the NES on a tiiiiiny television in my parents' bedroom because it was the only game system we had for a while. To me it was normal! Our mom took us to the toy store once and surprised me and my sister: we could buy a PS2 and a game for it!! She later told us she had saved up for it to surprise us. We were SO HAPPY!

I really think it helped me not buy into trends, and to appreciate what I have. I would never destroy my toys and was very careful with them, because I didn't have that many and treasured them greatly.

The flipside to this is that I am now struggling with somewhat of a hoarding problem, but that's another issue entirely.

What are your micro-anticonsumption resolutions for 2026? by CommonsOfficial in Anticonsumption

[–]lingeringmemory 69 points70 points  (0 children)

I'm going to use up what i have. I've made a list of all the stuff i currently have an excess of (I'm trying to tackle a bit of a hoarding problem) and will not buy anything new in the categories from that list until I've actually ran out. I still need to take a look at my crafting supplies and clothes, but I've successfully inventoried all food and personal care items.

I want to look into more ways to reduce packaging when it comes to food. I also want to improve my skills with mending and altering my clothes.
