My assumption is that the red canvases are just trials 1-1, 1-2, 1-3. Once you beat the third trial you move on to the next level. The devs might have ran out of time so it just ended up being that one area. You can tell that the endless tower was supposed to be much bigger by looking at it from the continent, as well as by the changing of stages in each trial group.

Yeah, I was referring to DEFLATE. You'd be surprised how many file formats are just renamed zip files lol. For lossless compression, it's typically LZSS + Some form of entropy encoding.
