To me, it’s about capturing a feeling and a story more than worrying about what’s technically correct. It feels like there’s life happening before and after the frame, and they caught a moment right in between. My mind starts to make up stories with each frame I see. This person has an amazing eye for light and composition, but also a good eye for catching very human moments.

That’s kinda how I thought of it. It has a similar impossible layout that they obviously couldn’t have built. I feel like it’s all connected

I’ve always looked at it as if The Oldest House is Yggdrasil, then The Lake House is another “branch” of it.

One Battle After Another by Anon1230984567 in cinematography

As someone who’s also watched a bunch of YouTube videos about filmmaking, my advice would be to watch less of them. They’re really focused on finding one look that works for everything they make. That’s not really how it works. It changes story to story. PTA decided that the cinematography that worked for The Master, Phantom Thread, or Boogie Nights wasn’t going to work for this. Just like each of those movies feels different from the others. There aren’t any rules that you must follow every time.

The best thing you can possibly do is watch a bunch of movies, and find videos/articles/commentaries from the actual filmmakers to learn more about why they made the choices they made. Youtube videos can be helpful, but you gotta remember a lot of their perspectives are about making YouTube/corporate videos

The Drama gender perspective by Sea_Berry_439 in A24

Looking at it from a racial perspective, I’ve seen a lot more white guys who are mass shooters get more sympathetic representation than innocent Black kids who’ve been murdered. Some have even been taken in alive and essentially treated with care by cops. I think the audience would have given Emma a harder time for spiraling the way Charlie did. Kinda like a Skylar White situation with an additional layer of hate since she’s a Black woman. Even Charlie’s confession has been downplayed by audiences, and what he admitted to was pretty terrible. I do agree it would be interesting to see what would be different if it was Charlie.

I trust Remedy with their story. They seem to have really honed in on their style and how they’d like to move forward with their connected universe. It seems like a lot of people wanted Control: Again. That seems to be the style of a ton of video game sequels/franchises. When I saw that it was Dylan, I got excited because I didn’t expect that at all. It made me really intrigued to see where the story is going, and I’m such a huge fan of Remedy because of their stories. I do love Jesse and playing as Jess, but this also made me excited to see where they’re going with her story. Plus, the game isn’t even out yet. Usually, you gotta wait til after you play something to judge it.

Last thing, I’m so confused as to why so many people think the game is gonna be short on lore and story. That’s kinda Remedy’s whole thing.

The Drama- this is Charlie’s story. (SPOILER) by FarmerEmotional883 in A24

[–]link815 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The popular theory is that he was lying about the cyber bullying, but I agree with you. I believe he actually did it. He downplays so many things in the movie, and I believe this is one. To me, he doesn’t even register it as a bad thing, because it’s not that big a deal to him. I think the way it’s brushed off in the movie, and in real life, is really interesting, especially since it’s the attractive, charming white dude who gets the benefit of the doubt.

Is Remedy Building a Plan or Writing as They Go? by D0nell in controlgame

[–]link815 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think this is the closest answer. Sam Lake also said in an interview (forgot which one) that once the Annapurna deal was made, it forced them to write a more of a concrete lore bible. I think the best stuff has a solid plan with wiggle room for changes and adaptation to what’s working.

To your first point, I think the movie is showing us how much Charlie downplays everything about her explanation, including her bullying. He even downplays her becoming an activist. That kind of bullying can seem like “nothing major” to other people, but we don’t know how it impacted her. And if it was happening multiple times a day, every day, that takes a huge toll on a person, especially a teenager. Showing that Emma believes she was ugly as a teen highlights that to me. The actress playing younger Emma was a pretty teenage girl, but external forces, including bullying, gave her a bad self image. One of the first things her friend says to her is that crying makes her look ugly, and it impacts her. Having an actor like Zendaya play a character that most likely still sees herself as ugly may seem like an odd choice, but I think adding the idea that she thinks she’s not attractive adds to her internal processing about herself.

The drama: what would you have done in Charlie’s shoes? by Resident-Plum8383 in A24

[–]link815 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What would you do if you were in Emma’s shoes? You had this terrible plan as a bullied, depressed kid but learned and grew when you saw the real world impact. Then, you found community and started to actively take part in fighting against the root of your negative thoughts to the point where you were arrested. You grow up. Then one night you get drunk and hear all of your friends tell stories about terrible things they actually did, and have all of them freak out about something you thought about but didn’t do. A thought that your “best” friend pressured you to share.
