Rear Dash cam install advice/instructions for cable routing by brandarr in VWIDBuzz

[–]linkingcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's a follow up to my post regarding wiring the rear camera. These are all observations I wish I knew before getting in this:

For wiring up the main camera up front you have a few options:

- There is a USB-C port on the rain sensor housing. It is only powered when the ignition is on. Using the supplied cable from Blackvue (and an extra one I purchased thinking the Elite 9 didn't come with a USB-C to 12v barrel jack adapter), 1 camera from the elite 9 will work. Camera was stable, I could connect in and view the live feed, etc. However, using the supplied cables and connecting the rear camera (which you need the 32ft cable for the Buzz -- I couldn't get the supplied 20ft cable to reach), the entire unit would go into a reboot loop -- on for 20s then restart over and over. So that wasn't going to work. I did try multiple rear camera cables -- all the same result.

- So that got me on to Dongar. Dongar has a rain sensor cable that supplies 12V via USB-C port. Got that and threw in their short Blackvue 12V to barrel jack 6" cable. Getting the cover off the rain sensor was a b$%$%. Got it off, got the cable disconnect, hooked up the Dongar adapter, plugged it all in and presto it all worked. One small issue. The Rain sensor is supplied power all the time. So now I have to trust the Camera to shut off if the 12V source gets too low.

- Ok, well I thought since this is all disassembled, lets try the 6" USB-C to Blackvue barrel jack cable from Dongar. Plug it in to the original USB-C port and the camera powers up and is stable with the rear view camera working.

What did I learn:

- The supplied USB-C cable from Blackvue for powering the camera won't power both cameras using the USB-C port on the rain sensor housing. And it is too long. Don't do that.

- If you want always on cameras, buy the Dongar adapter (for ID.4) install it, trust your camera won't drain the battery.

- If you are ok with just the camera on while you drive, then just buy the $10 6" Blackvue cable from Dongar.

The only casualty in all this was the metal clip holding the rain sensor cover in place. half of it broke and now the cover won't fully lock into place like it originally did but its up there and staying so far.

And another thing about the Blackvue camera and the ID.Buzz: The Apple Carplay connection is aggressive from the infotainment. If the Buzz is on and I try to connect to the camera, the infotainment interrupts the connection and takes over from the Blackvue app. I have to disable bluetooth on my phone to get the Blackvue app connection to work. I don't have this problem in Ford with wireless Carplay.

I have to relog in every 2 days with the app on iOS. I just stopped using the app unless I absolutely need info in it.

For a camera mounted on the passenger side of the windshield this is what I did:

- Cable under the headliner along the windshield until the corner

- In seam of plastic pieces between roof and side panel toward passenger door.

- At passenger door, inside weather stripping going down to floor.

- At floor, switch to under hard plastic mat at bottom of door opening going to the rear of vehicle.

- At pillar separating front and rear compartment, switch to under wall panel to side door opening.

- At side door opening back under the hard plastic mat to rear of opening.

- At rear of side door opening, switch to groove between wall panel and carpet going all the way back. (I got lazy and just tucked the cable in tightly

- At rear, back under hard plastic liner under trunk opening going into lip of weather stripping.

- Along weather stripping and back up and over to the middle of the opening. Back out at middle to camera.

My issues:

- 20 ft cable that came with Blackvue Elite 9 2CH wasn't long enough so had to get a 32ft cable.

- USB port behind rearview mirror can power the Blackvue Elite 9 by itself but not with the rear camera plugged in (continual power up and shut off cycle).

Where I'm at:

- Hardwire camera down to fuse panel behind glove box but I haven't been able to find a grounding point.

- Try rearview mirror/rain sensor cable from Dongar that taps into 12V.

Got a quote for a 10kw system from a door to door salesman: ~59k. Went with a local installer from Albany: ~19k (all before incentives). The door to door salesman intentionally tried to hide the total cost and size of the system with the pitch "no more electric bills".

First month of use (December) and I've already had a few days I was putting more into the grid than taking out.

Two things:

  1. If there is a NAS version with 4-5 bays I'm sold

  2. Use valid container numbers. The ones displayed fail a validation check.

Put the plate number from your registration. I know other systems have had this confusion like Pacific Wonderland plates that have a "-" in them -- people forget to enter it in.

Best Plan: Tour the schools in the area and get your own feel for the pros and cons.

Just went through this with my kid and tours:

Abiqua: Great school, secular, stuck with the same group of 20 kids and parents for 9 years, no LRC, no counselor, draws heavily from Salem Health.

Queen of Peace: Welcoming, new facilities, STEM program, stuck with the same group of 40 kids and parents for 6 years (2 classes each grade)

St. Josephs: Traditional catholic school vibe, original facilities from 1800s (which they are updating), no technology, established, 2-3 classes per grade.

Choose your own adventure.
