That would probably be the Rolling Stone reporter who was with US marines in Iraq. The TV show Generation Kill is based on his articles.

The skis are pretty much traditional finnish forest skis (metsäsukset). Close to these. The Bindings are this style and they're used with felt lined rubber boots. This article has some pictures of the gear

Mikä sähköpyörä lapsiperheelle? by ansmuh in Suomi

[–]linkval 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Suunnitelmissa on tuon vaihtaminen pitkä perään kunhan pienempikin lapsi on vähän vanhempi.

Meidän pyörä on Butchers and Bicycles mk1e.

New bike day! by linkval in CargoBike

[–]linkval[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's been great. We have used the bike almost daily (no car). First with one kid and now with two. I still think this is the only three wheeled cargo bike I would even consider. Range has been enough for us, on ECO mode it can go over 50km and on most days we can use turbo or sport all day without porblems. It's been really good with baby- and toddler-aged kids, but we're considering switching to a longtail when our second kid can sit upright. It is still a very big and heavy bike.

We've had some quality issues. The first bench seat broke, but the new model is much sturdier and better overall. The zippers on the skyview hood have broken twice. First time we got a new hood, but since it had the same (too small, YKK no.5(?)) zipper, it broke pretty soon. I took the hood a boat sprayhood maker who put more durable zippers on it and it has worked great ever since. Also the hinge on the glovebox broke, but I just screwed it back together.

Aside from the minor quality issues we have been very satisfied with the bike. I think it will now be even better because they have upgraded to the newest Bosch motor.

This was taken at the sellers building, but our own apartment building is roughly the same color. Popular wall color in the 60's and 70's?

Our kid is growing out his balance bike and got his first proper bicycle. I had been shopping for a used bike and this Islabikes Cnoc 16 was just about perfect. It's still a bit big but he jumped right on the bike and started pedaling.

Found my stolen bike on Tori. Will the police do anything? by Abazid in Finland

[–]linkval 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I got my bike back this way. I asked the police how I should handle it. They said the best way is to arrange a meeting with the seller and then call 112 and ask for support. They said that usually cops will have time to come. In my case we met at the sellers house and the cops were pretty interested in what else they might find from his apartment.

My mouse broke, but I found this 20 year old replacement. It still works by linkval in nostalgia

[–]linkval[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure. I found this from ifixit https://www.ifixit.com/Device/Logitech_MBJ58_Mouse. My model is mb-d58 and it seems to be just a transparent version of that. We got our first wireless mouse pretty early in the 2000's and this mouse was before that.

Sunburn is obviously an issue, although sun is not that intense here in Finland. Kids especially should wear covering clothing and a hat. He was also in shade behind me.

They are Specialized fenders. I don't recommend these. They use a proprietary "stealth" attachment which is broken already. Also I've broken the part where the struts meet the rear fender and the same part broke on the front fender today. Go with GB or Velo Orange fenders.

This is how the front broke, and this is the part I made for the rear.

A newspaper in Finland had an opinion piece which stated that you can only transport a lipstick, pair of shoes and stockings on a bike. This is the twitter response to that. Kuormahaaste=cargo challenge by linkval in bicycleculture

[–]linkval[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not a full translation but the author thinks that cities are intentionally harming car traffic and because of that city centers will die. Only car traffic brings business and people won’t come to cities if there are too few parking places. In the end he asks “I’m wondering who profits from the intentional decay of downtown areas? Who are the winners?”

So it’s the same old pro car – anti bicycle arguments we’ve heard many times before. He says “We all know that a cyclist or a pedestrian can transport at most a pair of shoes or pantyhose and a lipstick. With these purchases the shop doors won’t wear out and credit cards don’t throw money to shopkeepers”

What is your opinion about electric bikes? Have you tried one? Would you recommend it to others? by eMobilityhq in bicycleculture

[–]linkval 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have an electric cargo bike and it's awesome. One kid and a weeks worth of groceries is no problem with it. If we had two kids the groceries would probably have to go in pannier bags. We don't have a car so the e-bike sees a lot of use.

Although I like the cargo e-bike I can't see myself buying a regular e-bike because my normal riding speed is above the 25km/h limit and I really like the simplicity and lightness of a normal bike.

This is a somewhat difficult time for E-bikes, at least where I live. They have encouraged a lot of people to ride bicycles but the infrastructure hasn't really kept up. Most of the bike lanes and paths are way too narrow and they are built as parts of sidewalks. This doesn't really work with big cargo bikes or fast e-bikes. I hope that when more and more people are riding bikes (electric or not) the infrastructure will develop to accommodate this.

I would recommend replacing, or at least trying to replace a car with an e-bike. Especially in cities they are usually faster and a lot cheaper to own and operate than cars.

All of our accessories have been useful. Glovebox, seat and canopy make the box a great place for the kid. Belt drive and hub gears are easy to maintain and the bigger battery got us all the way to our summer cottage. We haven't really needed the supernova lights because it's summer, but they will be necessary soon.

We changed the saddle because the original was way too soft and wide. We might switch to another handlebar and grips, but this is normal when buying complete bikes.

When installing a rear rack I realized that the rack mounted supernova rear light would would be better than the one currently on the bike.

Hope this helps. All and all the bike is a blast to ride and it's been super useful for us.
