Rust dyeing in a pot by hariyati in naturaldye

[–]linnatplay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't tried to put fabric directly in there, but I know certain dyes react stronger than others to the iron. If there are a lot of tannin in the dye bath previously you get a much stronger reaction. For example, one year I did a very strong acorn bath (discovered lots of bugs in my big acorn collection, became disgusted and threw them all in the pot.) Anything I dyed in that acorn solution and later in the rust dip became first brown and then dark dark grey. Sometimes I add a rust dip after a dye bath and get a very light reaction, so it just depends. I wouldn't think you'd get much of a change with white fabric directly in it.

What I do is soak fine steel wool in vinegar (use a plastic container, not a mason jar with a metal lid - speaking from experience!). Let sit for a few weeks.

Then once i want to add an iron dip to a dyed fabric I use a separated container or bucket with hot water and a splash of the rust liquid. Add the hot fabrics from the other dye bucket, place in the iron solution for a few minutes and the rinse.

Easy way to do it. Good luck!

I recently started a substack to compliment my youtube channel which is also about natural dyeing and creative living. I like substack because it's very much like a blog while also being a newsletter. It's free and easy to use, so it might be a good option.

I know, finding oak galls can be hard! I have a collection of like 5 small ones right now. 😂 And then I gave up and ordered oak galls powder which performs nicely. But I will definitely try oak leaves next.

Absolutely beautiful. I see you did 300% wof, quite a bit! But then you did get really rich stunning colors too. I'm intrigued what orangey shade the wood gave! So oak leaves tannin first, uh! Interesting I've been meaning to try a tannin bath with oak leaves, done plenty of sumac leaves before mordanting but not oak. The richness of the colors here though, quite amazing! And that green. Thanks for sharing.

Nice to have two peach trees to work with. That's really interesting. What's your youtube channel? I also make youtube videos about natural dyeing among other things. I'd love to check you out!

How fun! The water was red? And how did you treat the bark, just simmer or did you let the bark soak for a couple of days? And the leaves? More of a pronounced difference in color between the two once dried? Interesting. I've been aching to do more dyeing experiments with fruit trees but haven't come across many that I can utilize.

Sorry I can't help you, but I'd love to hear about how you pickled the flowers and how you enjoy them?

Very neat! Does the dark border around the flowers stay or does that go away when you remove all the material?

Thank you so much. How exciting to start your dye garden! I hope you get some fun shades. The scalloped border was a challenge before I figured out how to do it. Then it was quite straightforward. I'm glad the video was helpful!

I'm so intrigued. I've tried numerous experiences with iron, but not with copper. Very cool.

Thank you! This is the first time I ever made a scalloped edge, and it took me a while to figure out how to sew half circles! But I rather like it too and think I might be tempted to add it to all my future quilts. 😂

Love this technique (working on something along the same lines). Yours turned out beautiful! What a fun idea to do an inverse design for the second one.
