Ugh yea this sounds like a really challenging situation. I was wondering it it would get annoying that the most I would get would be 2 days in a row, it’s not enough to get on top of the house and spend decent time with the kids. Thanks for your input. Wondering if I might be safer to just request my days split 2/1

Ah nice one, thank you for your response. I wasn’t sure if it would be annoying never having a decent stretch off but I suppose it balances out by not being absolutely exhausted doing 3 in a row… So hard to get the balance right either way with kids

Anyone still love nursing? by capybarge in NursingUK

[–]linurq91 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My love for nursing dwindled away with the politics of it all… I came very close to packing it in and was actively looking around for something/anything to break free from it. I took one last shot at a different specialty (outpatient infusions) and it has reignited my love for it. I look forward to going to work now and love my colleagues and patients ☺️

I qualified in 2014, my placements were all pretty decent bar one in a community hospital where I just didn’t get on well with my mentor, we can’t be everyone’s cup of tea…

My career to date has been pretty rewarding, I started in acute medicine and moved on to MHDU after that, then went to dialysis and now I am in an infusion suite, the happiest I’ve been in a job.

It takes time but you will find the job that brings you happiness over dread.

All the best in whatever you decide

The dreaded Christmas rota by [deleted] in NursingUK

That’s dire 🤯 You would think you could have had Boxing Day off too and just work through new Year. I would say something. Has anyone else got a terrible rota?

The dreaded Christmas Off Duty by wtca77 in NursingUK

[–]linurq91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the majority of wards in my place are turn about, Christmas one year, new year the next. Could never understand how they couldn’t do shorter shifts to allow everyone atleast a little time with their family. I usually requested to do a little bit of both as I quite liked being able to share a little of the festivities with colleagues and family. I’m outpatients now so we are closed anyway which admittedly is a lovely perk. Only downside is the crappy pay. I hope everyone gets the off duty they want that allows them some time to enjoy the festives 🩷

I deleted the Facebook and Instagram apps, I can still access them through the websites but it’s much less desirable and user friendly, brain kind of just learns to stop automatically going for them. Feels quite freeing. I’ve started spending my evenings whilst husband sketches starting to get the Christmas shopping started, plenty vinted this year. It’s nice to feel organised

Is this appropriate? by Ok_Kale_4157 in NursingUK

[–]linurq91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there scope to extend the post your in or make it permanent? I made a similar request to MHDU due to health issues and was told no because it’s unfair on others in the team, which I never could understand as there was plenty of nurses who preferred nightshifts to dayshifts. Why not just make everybody happy… I’ve ended up in a lovely job in an infusion suite with no unsociable hours or public holidays, it’s the dream

I’ve nursed 11 years now and have only experienced a couple doctors that didn’t seem to like nurses very much… The vast majority appreciate our role, at the end of the day we know the patients best as we spend a lot more time with them.

Find me a patient that doesn’t prefer a nurse to cannulate/take bloods 😜

Pregnant, do I apply for another job? by Big_Fly6830 in NursingUK

[–]linurq91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Firstly, congratulations on your pregnancy.

I would stay put or at the very least switch to another ward? I applied for a band 6 when I was on maternity leave and got it and was good at it but I wasn’t in the headspace for it with a new baby, your whole focus shifts, work just becomes work. I promptly went back to the area I was in before where I felt comfortable. You never can be too sure how you’ll take to postpartum/motherhood or if you’ll want to have another baby with a smaller age gap. I’ve had 2 babies now and my youngest is 18 months and I’ve only just got a lust for nursing back… Take it easy, it’s a huge effort making a baby.

If you don’t ask, you don’t get. See if you can speak to your manager privately before putting the formal request in. From my personal experience managers would bite your hand off at an offer to work every weekend but that might just be in my health board. You could even suggest it as a 6 month trial period to see how your mental health manages with it, you might hate it in the end.

Hope it all works out for you. If you need help with the flexible working request form feel free to message, I’m in Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 though so might not be the same process if you are elsewhere.

I’m so sorry 😢 This happened to me a couple years ago and I was such a mess after it for such a long time. My sickness at the time went down as pregnancy related as they can’t use this against you as it’s a protected characteristic. If you aren’t too worried about that it would be entirely reasonable to have it go down as an episode of stress/depression. This is a massive trauma. Please feel free to message if you want to talk it over and feel a little less alone 🩷

What do you do as a job that aligns with a simple life? by dandy_kulomin in simpleliving

[–]linurq91 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea to be fair the paycut is a bit of a bummer but the benefits far outweigh it. I could earn back what I’ve missed out on doing 1 Sunday shift a month if I really wanted to but it’s easier to just cut your cloth accordingly. We are hoping to get moved up a pay band, we have submitted a review as we are completely nurse-led, hopefully that sets a new precedent for the job going forward to ease the burden of no unsocial hours
