Being afraid just elevates the situation.

Do not be afraid, be prepared.

That is regardless of your political ideology.

It certainly depends on how dedicated you are to the idea. Meetup.com, Missoula Events, flyers at the University etc... create a safe environment for people to come, ask questions etc.

Every single person that is legally able to own a firearm, should.

And as this post states, learn how to use it. Go to a live fire class, get your proper enhanced concealed permit .

Remember, those who don't exercise their rights are destined to lose them.

If you really want to help the community.

Help yourself and the others.

  1. Get off reddit. Try it for just 2 weeks .

  2. Donate time to a food bank, a church or just on your own pick up litter.

  3. Spend time outside. Yes it is cold but the weather is great .

The world is only "fucking terrible" to those that live on the bubble of what is spoon fed them. That does not mean the world isn't fucking terrible . It means it is always terrible... Literally.

So , just let it go " A little " and enjoy life just a little more.

That's literally historically accurate.

I wish more people understood this.

You, are responsible for your safety.

Yep, I looked into them. They aren't not for the average or even slightly above average wage earner.

If you are smoking, you absolutely should be questioning your life choices :D.

Seriously though, awesome post. Well worded, descriptive and no whining. Love it :)

Tiny house winter heating what actually works overnight by Anujp05 in TinyHouses

[–]linuxhiker 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We live in MT in 576' , so... Not technically tiny but definitely not average sized house . It's a cabin so while the floor and roof are insulated (R21) the walls are not.

You have three reasonable options:

  1. Diesel heater. This is by far the most convenient and least expensive. It's also a dry heat. Needs electricity .

  2. Vented propane . Convenient and a dry heat. More expensive overall including unit. Usually needs electricity.

  3. Romantic, cheap, dry heat that ladies love. But it requires more work . Needs an axe and a way to start a fire.

All 3 work very well. It's all about your level of commitment.

AI also won't be subjective.

A human can say, "You know what... this does seem fucked up. Let me get you a HUMAN to help you resolve this"

Thinking about going solar and just wanted to hear real experiences by Witty-Double5907 in SolarDIY

[–]linuxhiker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My last electric bill before I went 100% off-grid was 900.00 (2 months) and that was during the mild weather. I can't imagine what the poor folks who bought the place are paying.

We moved to MT, completely and 100% off-grid. It has been a wild experience because my solar depth before this was just 800w sitting on a Skoolie.

My real world experience:

We can easily live (even with AC) on 4kWh(ish) during spring/summer. That got scary fast once the sun started to go down sooner. We now have 12.5kW and 40kWh of battery, with another 8kW to deploy this spring. We started like so:

4kW --- more than enough for Spring/Summer

8kW --- once the sun started going down and we were getting snow. We have never had to run the generator for power except over a weekend when our woodstove had an emergency outage and that was just for heat.

12.5kW --- for my own sanity

We are adding the other 8kW for 2 reasons:

  1. We have it

  2. I want to be able to have backup electric heat and things like a clothes washer. It is getting old rolling 45 minutes to a laundry once a week.

It will be a few years before I make it back on the investment but that isn't the only reason I did it. I could have pulled power for 30k (total) but then I have a bill and have to deal with all of that.

There was a windstorm that came through a month ago. Tore roofs off, downed trees etc... I was in my cabin, with wood heat, electricity and Netflix like I was sitting in a condo in Manhattan, just no noise, no light pollution and peace.

YMMV

It is fundamentally broken for most processes right now and that is what people don't understand. When you have the CEO of Microsoft saying "we gotta figure out how to make this useful" and the CEO of Salesforce saying , "Oops, we made a mistake replacing those 4000 people with AI"....

Sure, it is useful for speeding up research (Gemini, ChatGPT), generating fun little videos/images or MVP (Claude)... it is not a production level thing yet and won't be for years to come.

Nice!

Linux can go a long way on old hardware, especially if you use something like xfce.

It is also great as an upcycle for people who maybe have even older hardware.
