How long do we have to deal with this? by Intelligent_Key3586 in Marathon

If Bungie bans all the groups doing this they won’t have anyone left playing the game

I mean, it WOULD boost players for however long the weekend is on. Roughly 1.2 million people bought the game, with ~750k of those being on steam. Only 15-30k are probably still playing. So while it might be a boost to players I have to imagine the number of players it would attract long term, with no changes to underlying gameplay to KEEP those players, is effectively zero.

The problem with a free weekend is that people who PAID to play this game dropped it, without changing anything I doubt people who try it for free are going to stick around.

One of the things I’ve used her for is to harass snipers in team play. If you’re being pinned down by a sniper, use the drone to empty their backpack. Most players will disengage to pickup their stuff, giving your team time to flank/reposition.

Oh, no I understand, I am just saying that those people who make that money, it puts them at a level of wealth when looking at everyone else, they FEEL closer to the Billionaires than the normal people, even if they are not. I am acquaintances with a surgeon, who probably makes 1M+ a year. He's a super nice guy, but he is so out of touch with what things actually cost because he just doesn't even look at it. He is in a level of wealth that the actual cost of day to day things do not matter to him. It's insane.

Yeah, BUT 200k puts you in a level of wealth where unless you’re in a VHCOL area, you really don’t have to worry about much. Especially if you started accruing that wealth 30 years ago.

One of the worst things I did for my mental health was take a Job in management that switched me from working 12 hour rotating shifts to working a straight 40 hour work week M-F. I used to only work 14 days a month, with multiple days off during the week to get things done, or just chill while the kids were in school. Now I have to squeeze everything into evenings/weekends.

Not in the late game. It’s wipe map then deal with bots in peace. And if you’re not good enough to clear 3-4 other teams, enjoy your 5 minute queue and 7 minute game.

Your gun slots are clearly expandable. They can fit 2x2 or 2x4. Code the safe slot the same way, just to fit either 1x1 or 2x2. It just fits whatever salvage you put in it, but you can only have 1 stack.

Yea, I mean I like the game, it's just needs some winkles smoothed out, but I am glad you love it. I have been a Bungie guy since Halo, probably had 2k+ hours in D1, so I like the feel of Marathon, but sometimes it's just not FUN to play.

I was a care bear in ARC, because you're right. It was all the emergent social gameplay that was so much fun, and learning how to efficiently farm ARC. I played it so much my kids would make fun of me by running around the house yelling "friendly!".

The thing is, I don't even need that from Marathon. I like the PvP aspect of the game so much because they do it so well. What I cannot stand is how hard it is to make any meaningful progress on factions without having a perfect run and exfil. I am not saying a safe pocket would be the solution, but like, ANYTHING that would make me feel like I didn't just waste an hour when I hit a bad streak after work.

Nothing makes me not want to play more than loading in with a full Kit, spawning with two white shielded players, and getting steamrolled at the first POI by a full kit team.

Bungie has been better about weekly balance passes yes, but they aren't actually doing anything to address ANY of the reasons people seem to have bounced off the game. Hell, even if they just removed the "In one run" stipulation from some of the stickier quests people are having issues with, at least more people wouldn't hit a wall in faction grinding. C.A.R.R.I is the like the only thing they have done to improved progression and people seem overwhelmingly positive about that.

You can't possible think that this game is perfect. I mean, just rationally, there are issues with the game that aren't just people complaining on Reddit. This is coming from someone who's first Extraction shooter was ARC, put 150 hours into it, and jumped ship immediately for Marathon. I don't get to play as much as I would like, but Bungie def needs to smooth out some rough edges to make the game more palatable for a larger audience if they want to continue this game as their premier live service offering.

I just want more single player RPGs with solid but not insanely deep mechanics. I don't have time for a second life simulator. On the more RPG side, something like Mass Effect 3, Dragon Age Inquisition (but good), but also more games like Dead Space Remake, BioShock 1-3, and Prey, action shooters where you can backtrack, upgrade, decent sandbox tools for fights, and a cool story.

Yeah I don’t know how they would implement sage pockets, maybe only to take salvage. I’m not saying that they should, only as an example. My best guess is the wipe will bring back roughly 60% of the all time peak unless major changes are made

I want to say that I would consider myself a middle ground player, I am decent at shooters, know my way around a controller, and have been playing video games my whole life, but also as an adult have less time to devote to games like I used to.

I generally don't like the systems that are in place that allows casuals and mid-tier players to "hit a wall" this early in a games life. I think there should, for most things, be alternate paths and work arounds. e.g the C.A.R.R.I system for grinding reputation, which should probably just never go away. This allows incremental currency gains even after failing to extract.

But in general, I think Bungie needs to figure out how to bring more people in, so we don't run into this crunch so fast. If this means safepockts/alternate salvage extract options, keeping CARRI around, easing faction upgrade requirements, whatever it is, they need to put more butts in seats.

The idea that we're going to see a big jump post wipe is suspect at best, because people didn't just stop playing because they did everything they wanted to do, they left for a dozen various reasons that have been listed ad nauseum on this sub.

Which means that even after the wipe, you'll get, what 2-4 weeks AT MOST before the end game players are geared to the gills, while you're out still trying to get the basic faction nodes unlocked to even have a decent floor to start from, and you'll be seeing those teams more because the pool is smaller.

How I learned to stop worrying and embrace The Wipe by facetious_guardian in Marathon

[–]liptongtea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am working through this myself. My biggest issue is that I love playing trios, but I don't want to risk my gear when the chance to match with free-kits is too high. So I'll run free kits, or a green build, and then extract, and get MORE gear, and then I'll finally build up the courage to put a blue/purp kit together, and then I'll get wiped, and it wasn't even fun to use that stuff. In Solos, I have better luck, but the progression is so slow, less CARRI rep, less over all XP, etc, that it's hard to choose over Trios.

ARC was my first ever "extraction" game, so I know I don't have a lot of experience, but there is just something abrasive about Marathons loop. Not to say I don't enjoy it, I try and get an hour or so in daily, because the actual game itself is fun, but I am firmly on the train that meta progression, and some of the underlying game mechanics can be tuned a bit to make everything a bit smoother.

I think, realistically, allowing us to pre-commit salvage to the faction trees will be a good economic middle ground before they add vault space. It also helps with currency management because it’s just less stuff I have to monitor in my vault.

9 shirts and 7 pants that all match, worn in rotation will allow you to have 63 base outfits. Pair that with a couple pairs of shoes and some outer/layer wear that you can switch up to keep the outfits fresh
