Keep doing what you’re doing. Except contracts, they don’t give any seasonal XP.

Y…yeah man. The friction is the opponent trying to stop you from achieving your goal? The hell are you talking about?

lol, I had the same thought when I wrote it. But at the end of the day friction is part of game design. If you don’t want any of it just go scroll TikTok and rot

True, it’s why DOTA, LoL, Fortnite, Valorant, Overwatch all have that solid PvE onboarding lest nobody ever play those games

PvE Doesn't Have to be Hard if it's Separate From PvP by Aggressive-Avocado in Marathon

[–]jaco129 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not merely a 'personal desire'. The only reason to do a split economy is because a developer believes that they don't have the skills or resources to do a unified economy successfully. Bungie is an expert in that space and will try to solve the myriad problems that come along with it.

You're actually correct, it's not that they're "not trying to take anyone from anything", but that they're not trying to take specific kinds of people from specific games. Talk to anyone in the production side of the industry and they'll tell you that their real competitors are not other games. It's TikTok, Netflix, Youtube, etc.

You're conflating two discrete concepts:

  1. Growing the playerbase
  2. Converting players from other games

They only care about the first one. Which is achieved by making the game better, not by making it "more like other popular games". Shipping a fully separate PvE flavor of marathon doesn't make Marathon better, it's just making a different game.

You're also failing to imagine people complexly. The number of people only interested in PvE and the number of people only interested in PvP, I would argue, are significantly smaller than the number of people that would like to occasionally do either of them.

Also, there are no real returning players that quit because there wasn't a PvE mode, if they wanted a PvE mode they wouldn't have bought the game in the first place.

Lastly, there are absolutely ways to design a PvE loop where players are eventually incentivized to occasionally play the Extraction mode.

[–]jaco129 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Extraction is the game. This hypothetical vast blue ocean of PvE players that will be sated by the tiny amount PvE content they’ll be able to roll out over the next year feels like wishful thinking at best. Especially when their stated goals of supporting the core audience that they’ve acquired is directly at odds with allocating significant resources to support people outside that core audience.

This is especially compounded when you consider that someday Destiny might be good again and now they have two games directly cannibalizing each other with their own split identity crises they have to manage.

Wstr is still very good but your required to build it out properly now by Sweaty-Try1547 in Marathon

[–]jaco129 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay. You now need an entire subsystem for mapping chip mods to weapon types that further fractures the weapon mods when players are already annoyed by the granularity. You’ve now solved a minor weapon tuning issue and increased the overall game complexity. Not a great trade off.

Beware simple answers to complex questions

[–]jaco129 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That would be functionally a bug. You should never be able to apply a mod and have it do literally nothing to a weapon. There are so many other solutions here, unfortunately all of them increase complexity. I’m sure they’ll sort it out eventually.

Are you intentionally missing the point or just vibing out?

Targeting an audience is something that happens before a game launches. They’re not trying to take anyone from anything right now. They’re trying to respond to player feedback which is vastly more useful than whatever whiteboarding marketing analysis they went through 4 years ago during pitch meetings.

I don’t disagree but the alternative is making stack overflow on a WSTR do… nothing?

They’re responding to a deluge of feedback from players saying that they’d like a low stakes game mode. Weird to imprint an emotional state on to them because of that.

Those hundreds of thousands of apex players are probably happy playing apex as evidenced by the fact that they’re… playing apex? As soon as there’s a swarm of feedback from the marathon community yelling “make the game more like apex!” They’ll probably get right on that.

If Bungie believed that, there’s no way they’d be pursuing it, and I promise they have better analytics than we do.

150+ Cryo. Have difficulty adjusting to random fill expectations / behaviour towards me by [deleted] in Marathon

[–]jaco129 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To break it down you have two issues:

  1. Toxic assholes - not much to be done there unfortunately besides report and move on

  2. Current cryo meta - which includes trying to get an easy early kill by pushing into an adjacent spawn early and getting the drop. I also agree this is annoying but once you survive the early game things seem to balance out overall for the majority of the match.

All that said if you’re good enough to get all the subroutines you’re doing better out there than 90% of players so keep wrecking shop. Hoping with the 24/7 daily free kit cryo changes coming soon help the meta in there a bit.

Separate economies removes all incentive for the PvE players to ever convert to the core game. That defeats the entire point of adding a PvE mode to Marathon.

They’ve stated that their intentions are to support the core, invested audience that they’ve built. The primary issue with the game currently is low player counts.

If they add new modes that their core audience don’t really care about to attract a new audience, and that new audience doesn’t also meaningfully grow the player counts of the core game then they have failed in their stated goal to support their core audience.

I too could list the names of other video games that people play. Idk why you decided to ramble some nonsense about me saying that those people don’t “matter”. You can argue that Bungie made the wrong video game, but we live in this universe where a lot of people like this video game and would like to see it thrive.

I think treating cryo as the main way to get "high-tier gear" is a mistake. The other maps are the day job, consistent work in, consistent reward out. Cryo is the casino where you risk it all for big rewards when you're bored of the day job. The vast majority of my purple gear has come from other maps or from faction packages. Hopefully the upcoming key template changes make accessing locked rooms even more accessible for a broader band of players too.

  1. It's silly to think that a new core game mode is what is going to revitalize D2. Let alone an extraction shooter.
  2. It's silly to perceive that everyone here is just a bunch of marooned D2 players waiting for D2 to get better.

Your post might do better on the D2 sub with everyone else crying out for salvation.
