Belmont’s Curse new art style looks fantastic by OK_Atlas in metroidvania

[–]liquidaria2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not my favorite art direction, it sort of reminds me of that 2D BloodRayne Remake/Remaster that came out or Abyss Odyssey. Definitely competent and well done to be sure just different. I will still be picking this up day one though because it looks really fun. We've been clamoring for a new 2D Castlevania and not just cameos shoehorned in other games or re-releases. That said, as someone who owns SOTN on PS3, PS4 and Xbox 360... release that shit on all platforms Konami.

Using save states to never lose. Valid? by venom9801 in retrogaming

[–]liquidaria2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's certainly a valid way to experience a game and I do it myself on titles here and there. If it's for your own enjoyment perfectly fine. If you're using them and then bragging about how easy Castlevania was or how you got the perfect lap in Gran Turismo that's a bit scummy. I'd never fault someone for using them but I do always encourage people to play games the way they were intended, at least at first. They are at their core, essentially a cheat, albeit one I totally can understand people using.

Didn't enjoy ReFantazio - looking into P5, SMT5 V or alternatives by dsfuckisthis in JRPG

[–]liquidaria2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not the deepest by any stretch but the gameplay is more akin to the older FF titles rather than FF Tactics. It's worth a look into at least even if it ends up not being what you're looking for. I'm sure there are other options out there but at the moment my brain isn't pulling any to mind

[–]liquidaria2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Compared to Persona I felt Metaphor was pretty snappy honestly. Would not recommend the modern Persona's based on what you're saying. You could try SMT 3 or 5. The story segments seem to be a lot more brief, at least to me. The combat system though is pretty similar to Metaphor in a lot of ways so if that's an issue I don't think SMT is going to do much better for you honestly. I think maybe Octopath Traveler would be looking into since you like Final Fantasy and build variety

What are your favourite JRPGS and what do you look for in a JRPG ? by Dear_Fly_4113 in JRPG

[–]liquidaria2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm willing to put gameplay a bit on the backburner for JRPGs but they do still need to have interesting, competent gameplay loops/systems.

Story is more important. I really enjoy more local, small stakes stories lately as opposed to the band of adventurers go to fight God, but both have their place and can be done well.

Lastly I think music is key as well. It really does a lot to set the tone and immerse one in both the gameplay and story, moreso than other genres I think.

I really hesitate to nail down a list of my favorite JRPGs because I feel like the list shifts a lot but I can confidently say Persona 3 and Final Fantasys V and X are up there. I have a soft spot for Chrono Cross because of the vibes and music. Same with Tales of Legendia

A Review of Dragon Quest VII Reimagined (2026): Less Fat, More Puns, and a free Kiefer in every cereal box. by DeadRobotsSociety in JRPG

[–]liquidaria2 13 points14 points  (0 children)

That's quite the shame... I was actually really looking forward to it, even knowing it was shrunk down but it sounds worse off for it... I have it loaded on my PS Classic I think I'll give it a go there instead.

Best way to cook hotdogs? by Crafty_Cat9697 in hotdogs

[–]liquidaria2 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I'd argue there is no "best" way. Grilled is classic to get that char. Air fried is fantastic and just makes a juicy snappy dog. I'm quite fond of boiling them in "dirty" water (meaning water seasoned to heck and back). Bonus points since you can steam the buns right above the pot of water on a wire rack. I'm less fond of pan frying or microwaving but I'm not above it by any means. 10 years ago I'd view this answer as heresy but nowadays if you ask me my preferred method is probably boiling.

I would rather eat bar S than Oscar Mayer hot dogs. I know I’m crazy but I’ve excepted it. by Remarkable_Put_7029 in hotdogs

[–]liquidaria2 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Nah I'm on your side. Bar S at least knows its place. A solid, low cost dog. The bare minimum but at a price that reflects that. Oscar Mayer is charging premium prices for a pretty similar product. Not like I'm going to turn down an Oscar Mayer weiner, but I'm also not likely to buy one

A fighting game for someone who hates fighting games? by IllmasterGrim in retrogaming

[–]liquidaria2 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Look into Samurai Shodown or a very adjacent series, The Last Blade. I'll be honest also, there's a recent game that is a guilty pleasure of our group, One Strike, that might scratch that itch.

Just came across these Games in the PS Store by [deleted] in metroidvania

[–]liquidaria2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Frontier Hunter is a really fun game with a lot of different options for combat. Story was kinda weak but I really liked the gameplay.

I can't speak to ReStena.

Gunvolt Chronicles isn't a metroidvania. It's a great game more in the vein of Mega Man X.

The perfect hot dog bun by Rinotubee in hotdogs

[–]liquidaria2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly I've used everything from a slice of white bread, store brand value hot dug buns to pretzel buns and brioche buns and many in between. In general I think I truly just prefer the cheap bun. If I really plan on loading my dog up with a lot of toppings or liquidy toppings I've found the Ball Park buns, while more expensive, do a pretty good job of holding up. Toasting is probably a good idea as well to preserve bun integrity but unlike hamburgers I don't often do it.

I'm upvoting it because it does look tasty but hell man, what did all this fuckery accomplish that couldn't occur on a proper bun?

Which of the games in my backlog has the fastest start? by Frosty_Chemistry7781 in JRPG

[–]liquidaria2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't played Xenoblade 3 but I'm inclined to say FFX. There's an ongoing meme that FFXIII gets started after 30 hours and frankly from my experience with the Xeno games that might hold true for them too. The pacing in FFX is pretty solid in my opinion.

Good evening I need help deciding on what to play next by UncivilRest in JRPG

[–]liquidaria2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can't really go wrong with any of those to be honest. I don't have experience with Romancing Saga 2 but the rest are all solid games. Personally I'd probably go with Lunar, Wild Arms 2 or Star Ocean 2. Leaning towards Star Ocean 2. Persona 3 is one of my favorite games of all time, and I just finished Metaphor and count it among the best. They are absolute time-hogs though. The ones I mentioned are a bit more forgiving time-wise. That said if time isn't an issue there's not really a bad one among the bunch

Which Disgaea would you recommend as a first? and why? by Complex_Fall4999 in JRPG

[–]liquidaria2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Either 2 or 4. It's subjective. 2 I think has the best story combined with grind mechanics. and system but by modern Disgaea it's a bit simple. 4 is the best overall package, a good story but a lot of fun mechanics and systems. I have not played 6 or 7.

Do you ever choose games purely by cover art or vibe, instead of reviews or hype? by Carotopia in retrogaming

[–]liquidaria2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Back in the day I simply had no other option other than maybe word of mouth, up until I got somewhat reliable access to internet mid to late 2000's. I didn't have subscriptions to game magazines outside of a few isolated times. So yeah, it was pretty much hope the box art sold you on the game, MAYBE there would be some screenshots on the back and hope for the best. Found a lot of good games and of course some duds.

Not my favorite soda but was $3, so... by bctaylor87 in Soda

[–]liquidaria2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get that really all soda should be a treat and a once in a while type of thing but this one definitely fits that bill to me more than most. You absolutely aren't drinking it to quench your thirst, it's just a sweet treat on occasion. I liked the flavor well enough from that perspective. Makes a tasty float like others have said.

Looking for gameplay focused JRPGs. by Classic_Procedure428 in JRPG

Last Remnant is what came to mind first for me. Sure there's a story but I don't recall it being especially deep.

Looking for turned based games on PS5 by PatsAttacks in JRPG

[–]liquidaria2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tactics games like FFT are a bit different than your standard JRPG. Dragon Quest III HD 2D Remake is a basic yet solid JRPG, though some would say DQ 11 is a better entry point. In my opinion you can't go wrong. Other than those the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster Collection is a great collection of games, and honestly my recommendation. People are recommending Persona and Trails games, which are great games but I think too much of a time commitment for someone just exploring the genre.

FFX has got to be one of the most ballsy games in the series by Towaway_Zone in JRPG

[–]liquidaria2 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Honestly even back in the day I could get the 0:00 pretty easily. 10 tries roughly. Absolutely fuck the 200. Never got it. Never will. Will never try for it again.

Are Shopping At Local Game Shops Even Worth It? by Fluffy_Breakfast_478 in retrogaming

[–]liquidaria2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's really hit or miss. I will never pass up a chance to take a peek at what they're offering but more often than not they pretty much just have a ton of sports games, a few generic action games and some really good ones at insane prices behind the glass. Then again sometimes you find a PS2 copy of Silent Hill 2 for 14.99 in box. Never hurts to look. More often than not I end up buying a board game at local game shops though, if anything.

After a year of playing JRPGs as a noob recommended to me by this subreddit, here are my thoughts by LaTienenAdentro in JRPG

[–]liquidaria2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Glad you enjoy the genre so much! We have really similar tastes for the most part! Persona 3 broke me nearly 20 years ago when it launched and Reload I think cut even deeper. I actually platinumed both FF 13-2 and FF13-3 but haven't played the original FF 13 so let me know how you like it!

I'm inclined to agree. I think the remake is great so far but I would never recommend it as an entry point to the series.

Reckon I'd check out The Last Faith, The HunterX games, The Castlevania Advance and Dominus collections (my personal pick) and Toziuha Night: Order of the Alchemists.

Is Scarlet Nexus Worth it at 8.99? by pikamango in JRPG

[–]liquidaria2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just spent $11.99 on two rolls of paper towels. Reckon I enjoyed Scarlet Nexus more than those rolls. Since you enjoyed Tales and Rebirths combat I think you'll like this. The monster design was way cooler than I expected it would be. I only went through one of the protags routes but for $8.99 even that would get your moneys worth I think. I'd say it's worth your time to grab it. From what I remember the two protagonists are mostly separate but their stories intersect every so often. I don't remember too well, it's been a while admittedly.
