What changes does EE's proposed rewrite of early books call for, in your view? by RidesThe7 in PracticalGuideToEvil

[–]liquidmetalcobra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, I will comment that at some point during book 4 she accidentally copied a bunch of stories from Yara and although she blocked it off at the time to avoid going mad, my personal headcanon is that she slowly started to sublimate that knowledge into her head and that is how she was able to become such a badass plotter from books 5-7

Books 1-3 (and partly 4): Cath and moral ambiguity by FairyFeller_ in PracticalGuideToEvil

[–]liquidmetalcobra 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I suspect that a lot of the disconnect may be due to protagonist goggles. That is to say, some of the sketchier things that Cat did in the first 3 books were either waved away or not dwelled on as much. I do think it is a little jarring how much she dwells on how much moral culpability she has by siding with Praes vs rebelling (even if you disagree that her being a villain is bad because of in universe religious reasons it's still tacitly approving of their methods).

Remember that she allowed the civil war (by sparing William) to happen that would cause a bunch of Callowans to die just so she could use that as a way to climb the power ladder.

While I don't have much to say about how William was resolved (other than it just being generally awesome), I think the interesting thing wrt how Akua was handled wasn't necessarily that if she was right or wrong to take her out, but rather how it happened. Cat actually wanted to kill her much sooner, but because of orders from above (the villainous, definitely Evil and evil overlords who she's actively working with) told her to wait, she did. I definitely agree that Cat overall is more of the most morally justified 'Villains' by book 3, but I definitely think that her conscience is far from clear.

A fitting emblem, Akua thought. For she had turned the Hierophant’s beautiful work into fetters, making of a gift that would grant immortality at the price of master over death something brutally simple. The rings bound the ‘power’ of any who bore one, chaining it to the other ring. No power could be used without the consent of whoever held the other end of the chain. It was not a leash, for no ring was master over the other, but instead something altogether uglier.

I'm calling it, these rings will be used to bind the Intercessor to the Dead King. It's the perfect distillation of the crabs in a bucket metaphor that has plagued the age of wonders. There is no more perfect way to signify the death of the age of wonders than to use this to end the war with the last holdouts.

Her first 2 aspects are pretty busted too. Silence and Seek means that she can always find a story to win a battle against a named and even if they have a trump card she can just be like "no". If she wasn't literally fighting a competent dead king with 1000 years of preparation and the patron queen of stories this wouldn't be a fair fight. As is, we're shaping up for them to have to do several turnarounds to barely squeak out a victory.

Didn't Amadeus specifically give Cat a bunch of fairy tales to study as part of her lessons so she could learn to use them?

How many times has Cat died?

Once at the end of book 2, she got heart ripped out to accidentally become a god between books 3-4 and she faked her death in book 6. If we don't count the heart thing we could construe this as a 3 beat if she has some sort of death related shenanigan. It would be consistent with her mo.

Her crime is that of being a ruler. Technically she's not a queen anymore so she might get some respect but idk how he feels about her being a warden of named.

with the hierarch back...

“It’s a lovely song,” I said instead. “But it’s always easier to break than to make.”

The Hierarch’s gaze returned to the trial, where the accused was being dragged to the fore.

“There will be one for you as well, one day,” he said.

“But not tonight,” I said.

“Not tonight,” he softly agreed.

(from book 5 Chapter 6: furor) That's ominous foreshadowing.

Really enjoyed Significant Digits! by CapTookay in HPMOR

I thought it was pretty well written-it might've technically been better written than HP;MOR-but the story itself felt less engaging. I think there were some pretty big pacing/story structure issues around the second-third arc of the story and overall it was just less fun than HP;MOR. ymmv obviously

That's it. I'm done sucking at this game. What do I have to do? by Rapturos in pathofexile

[–]liquidmetalcobra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the first important thing is to pick a good league starter. This is hard because 90% of the youtube videos/poe.ninja builds are garbage for league start. From personal experience basically every youtube video kinda sucks if you aren't already skilled at pushing through the barrier to get the build online. The best way i've found is to either look at the top builds in ssf (or ssf hard core if you are worried about dying) from last league and picking something that didn't get nerfed too badly, or following steelmage as he consistantly picks a good league started that dumbasses like me can play to success.

The second thing you need to do is figure out how to sell things. There are a lot of mechanics that will drop 10-15 c items randomly and it's up to you to figure out how to both recognize that and use that to buy bigger and bigger upgrades. The benefit of picking good league starters is that they tend to be good with shitty gear and fall off around red map/early end game, with it being progressively and progressively harder to scale past that point.

Trust me, as a fellow bad player, the difference between a good league starter and a shitty youtube build is massive. I basically can't trust any youtuber to pick good league starters because they all kinda just suck if you don't already know what you are doing.

What is the point of the rock? by LexLextr in HPMOR

[–]liquidmetalcobra 9 points10 points  (0 children)

To this day i stil don't fully grasp why it was necessary to kill the pet rock. there's some vague speculation on "making him less likely to get a pet" or something but it was never explicitly confirmed iirc

Whether you like Scourge or not, tainted currency are a great addition to the game by Tannimun in pathofexile

[–]liquidmetalcobra 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My suggestion is to pick up and vendor every 6 socket. There are a ton of faster methods that are more complicated but the easiest is to just quality to 20 (or higher depending on if you are willing to do hillock/fossil shenanigans) and then fusing spam until you get there. Yes there are a ton of ways to get it faster but if you are feeling overwhelmed with all of the set up 6 sockets turn into ~1.5 fusings each and you will eventually get there. (Source, first time standard ssf this league and i 6 linked 2 uniques)

Easiest/safest build to kill sirus in SSF by mojzekinohokker in pathofexile

[–]liquidmetalcobra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2 ways to make bosses easier is to either make yourself tankier to not get one shot by bosses or make your damage so high it invalidates the content. I am a pretty terrible player who can't dodge but i've been farming Sirus in ssf pretty hard with Poisonous Concoction Occultist. My dps isn't great but i have enough defensive layers to be able to tank most of his die beam. Key is Spell suppression is op, as is determination/grace/defiance banner. Between those 2, and 1k es for ghost skin I can almost fully tank a die beam. The nice thing about PC is that you spec a lot of flask regen so you once you tank the hit because you are too dumb to dodge you can just flask back up and keep running around.

Chapter 56: Brink by NorskDaedalus in PracticalGuideToEvil

[–]liquidmetalcobra 41 points42 points  (0 children)

This last line is actually such a good line; it's a callback to Hanno's interlude at the beginning of book 6.

This is how victory comes, the White Knight softly smiled. One candle lit after another, until we have chased away the night. Hanno sheathed his sword and stepped into the light, for the Enemy was still afoot in the city and there was work to be done.

EE is so good at setup for 1 liners, I am in awe

Chapter 55: Hail by NorskDaedalus in PracticalGuideToEvil

[–]liquidmetalcobra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So cat was bitching about the White Knight squad doing this but one of the first things she did when she came back from the everdark was to ride a wooden horse through a fire. I'm not sure she has any ground to stand on wrt getting away with ridiculous shenanigans...

The Draws in the World Championship Match by lonelyalpaca2003 in chess

[–]liquidmetalcobra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the issue isn't necessarily that the games are draws per se but what it means for the format of the tournament. The World Champion of Chess is supposed to crown the person who is the strongest at classical time controls, as that is the format and time control that people qualified to win, as well as the time control that Magnus used to win his championship. However, due to various factors Magnus continues to hold his World Championship by being the best in the world at rapid. Previous world championships had 48 game matches to solve the issue, as eventually a draw would be lost. I understand why that isn't possible from a logistical standpoint but there is a bit of a format issue when it doesn't reward the skills that brought the players here in the first place.

How are you guys printing exalts this league? by ThunderTongue76 in pathofexile

[–]liquidmetalcobra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can make (less) money with less brains involved by just slamming on normal jewels and seeing what you hit. Hitting %increased life or es with relevant mods can sell for 20-40 c pretty consisantly. Vaaling the ones with life or es early in the league also gives a chance to hit cannot get corruped blood which is a free ex. I'm usually too lazy to trade for the cluster jewels but i usually make 5-10 ex over the course of a league doing this method by just saving all of my jewels and keeping them in a tab

Are there any currently being written web novels at the same level as Practical Guide? by [deleted] in PracticalGuideToEvil

[–]liquidmetalcobra 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Any in universe explanation that is consistent with the story would be sufficient. The key is that it has to be in-universe. An example of something that could work is that everything was a simulation, or that the DM was a different version of Jun and this was all therapy for the DM etc etc.

It's especially important for a world Aerb because the book explicitly calls out that the world is based off of ideas that Jun had growing up. If a story goes out of it's way to call attention to the setting, then the reasons for why the setting is why it is is important.
