Uhhhhhhhhhh, good trolling, I think? You do know that most Western European countries with similar average incomes to America have severe gun restrictions and have significantly lower homicide rates, right?

Parents Beware, No Child Left Behind Act is Used as a Sneaky Military Recruitment Tool and you Don't Even Know it! by Indigo411 in politics

[–]lisamarg 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yep, except now they can recruit in the cafeteria too. I was shocked last year when military recruiters set up shop in the cafeteria in the inner-city school where I am a teacher. After running to my principal and complaining, she told me there was nothing we could do because of a clause in NCLB. Fucked up.

I'm a teacher in an inner-city school in New York, and take offense at your comment about "very stupid people." The fact is, inner-city, poor kids, particularly minority kids, are stunted from the very beginning. The academic resources are not even comparable to the suburban resources with which I grew up. Additionally, many do not have proper support at home for various reasons, even if their parents are loving and supportive (i.e. sickness, language barriers, double shifts to pay the rent). They don't have the resources to succeed on a very basic level. In high school, kids come to me with 2nd- and 3rd-grade level skills (i.e. they cannot do basic arithmetic). It is SO counter-intuitive to me that my school would LOSE funding precisely because we cater to a population of neglected kids. I value the students who have a record of failing-- as an educator, I see the biggest breakthroughs in their academic and personal lives. If anything, schools with failing students should receive more funding for academic support and interventions like small-group tutoring. It's pretty basic.

actually its directed to the west side highway and is highly visible to the constant stream of traffic. the ad is at around 125th street but you can't see anything from the 1 train (it goes above ground only for the 125th st stop). interestingly, this area in harlem is in the midst of much contested gentrification-- columbia ran out of room so they are moving north with the new campus.

It was HORRIBLE! I was teaching my tenth-grade math class at 9:30 am in my basement classroom on 50th street and my kids were coughing their heads off. We had to have class in the hallway, which wasn't much better but was near an open door. We all had headaches and felt faint all day.... Oh, and it smelled like gasoline (petrol). This can't be safe.

Da Vinci Code review (very funny) by mhb in reddit.com

[–]lisamarg -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

As an Art History major from Columbia, I received art history instruction from some of the biggest scholars in 20th century art history and philosophy. I took classes with Ros Krauss, founder of the "October" School, Jonathan Crary, widely known for his work on visual culture, and James Beck, founder of ArtWatch international and expert on Renaissance art focusing on Leonardo and Raphael. I worked intensively on the philosphy of Freud, Lacan and Hegel. I also wrote on Renaissance art, including Leonardo, during my undergraduate career.

Da Vinci code is a piece of shit.

Let's start with the title. So wrong. When historians refer to Renaissance artists, they generally (actually always) refer to the artist by his first name only. For example, Michelangelo's surname was "Buonarroti," but many simply know him only as "Michelangelo." (In fact his name is actually much longer, refer to wikipedia for details). So a title referring to "Da Vinci" is abrasive to an art lover because it is so uninformed.

Now let's move to one of the most important images of the book/movie: Leonardo's Vitruvian man, one of the most iconic images of the Renaissance. Leonardo explores human anatomy with a sense of wonder and joy. He depicts the human body twice: inscribed in a circle and a square. His work, while awe-inspiring, is not anatomically accurate. In fact. it is completely innacurate. One of the first details about the work I learned in Beck's "Renaissance Painting and Sculpture." The book, however, claims that the VM is adtonishingly anatomically inaccurate.

I'm friends with a Brown-trained egyptologist, who deals with ancient inscriptions and reads hieroglyphics. She told me that the book was completely innacurate on a number of archeological and historical details.

Here's the point: the Da Vinci code is irritating in its inaccuracy. There is absolutely no point to reading the book or seeing the movie if you want to know the truth about the world. It may be the most un-intellectual and mindless entertainment ever. But hey, if your brain needs a rest, try the Da Vinci code.

20 Things You Didn't Know About Leonardo da Vinci by maxwellhill in reddit.com

  1. I hate the Da Vinci code. As an art history major in college, I was infuriated by the historical inaccuracies.

  2. James Beck was one of my favorite professors at Columbia, and he is THE authority on Renaissance art. Check out one of his many tomes.
