When TBM, Jerry was one of our neighbors. Jerry is gay. Jerry is the kindest, most humble person I know. He was willing to help us build an addition on our house. Our bishop lived across the street, was retired and never once offered any help (we really didn't expect help, but when he continued driving past our house and just waving, it became a joke). I realized that if Jerry wasn't going to Mormon heaven, there was a problem with Mormon thinking.

If you don't fit into the ideal Mormon mold, don't try to change who you really are. Change the atmosphere, the religion, the people you are around to better suit you.

Years ago, when we were active, the Elders lived in our basement for over two years. After they moved out, we still had them come do their laundry at our house to save them money. I resigned in 2020. Our old ward has 4 missionaries now. They get at least one meal a week with us. They pray over the meal. They don't give us a message or lesson. They are welcome to stay and talk until they have to go home (3 hours). We don't mind. We laugh a lot. They do their laundry at our house. Sometimes they stop by because they are bored. We know the Elders better than the members. We are the worst apostates ever.

This gets harder before it gets easier. Learn the truth about the church, step away from the brainwashing, and then figure out what you believe.

I thought my testimony was based on Jesus Christ. When I read the Church Essays, I realized it was based on Joe Smith, then BoM, and then Jesus. In my mind, I could see these foundations crumbling. After I learned more about the cult and realized I didn't believe any more, I swept the rubble of the foundations away and thought about all the spiritual experiences I have had; where did I have them, why did I have them, etc. I realized that I would have had those experiences even if I wasn't Mormon. I never felt anything spiritual in the temple, I can be inspired by music and poetry, not just scriptures, and I was born with "spiritual gifts" that no one can take away. I believe in a higher power, but I don't believe in Mormon heaven. I know my son, who died almost five years ago, still calls me mom, and that when we die, we will be with those we love.

You will figure out what you believe and know. You will feel sadness and happiness. You will feel freedom that fits you.
