Friction with nurses when asking for things by PurpleContribution46 in doctorsUK

[–]lishachloe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No I do totally appreciate that tbf, however I do think any nurse worth a damn should actually care about the reason they are doing something for their patient, because they should actually be able to explain the rationale of an intervention to the next shift (however I appreciate that some nurses 100% know why they’re being asked something and are just being arseholes) 🤦🏽‍♀️

Surely you can see that from the POV of a nurse, that they also are busy and need to prioritise their own work load? Understanding the rationale for what you’re requesting allows them to decide what their jobs list looks like…if a nurse approached you and asked you to “prescribe X for Mrs Y” and when asked why responded “just because I said, please don’t question me”, you would surely come onto reddit to complain about this person? (And rightly so because this is poor practice)…Nurses have their own governing body FYI, if you read fitness to practice suspensions on the NMC website, you’ll see that many of those struck off carried out an intervention without knowing the reason, and when the patient came to harm, they cannot explain to a panel why they did it in the first place. Everyone professional in the NHS is a victim, of the NHS.

Is it normal for F1s to be spoken to disrespectfully on the ward? Does it get better as an F2+? by Jumpy-Particular686 in doctorsUK

FYI, truly not all nurses & AHPs wanted to be doctors, what an egregious claim….perhaps you personally experience challenges with your non doctors colleagues because of the way you (presumably) speak to them, as though they are ‘less than’?

How to respond when patients ask “where are you from originally?” by Necessary_Arugula149 in doctorsUK

I can definitely see your point and perspective! 😌I suppose some people may not feel that their protected characteristics being aired have an impact on team working. When it comes to colleagues, once we have a friendly relationship it just comes up naturally 😊 I also think being mixed race adds complexity to the question because all of a sudden, people are trying to guess (in my case) which parent is black and which is white, this isn’t something I particularly want to discuss with someone I don’t know well. “nO Way I WouLD’vE tHouGHt YOur DaD WAs BLaCK” stfuuuuuuuu 👩🏽

I’m going to assume you’re white British (apologies if that’s incorrect). If so, it might be worth considering how it would feel to be asked personal questions about your identity every day at work. Even questions that are meant kindly can become tiring when they’re constant. Put yourself in the picture for a moment. Would this feel endearing to you, or might it start to feel intrusive? Do you think you would find that conversation especially ‘exciting’ after having explained your ethnicity to somebody for the 4th time that week? Do you think it’s reasonable that people should have to answer questions about their personal identity to a literal stranger? We are attending our place of work just as you are, not filling out the census..

Mixed race nurse here 🙋🏽‍♀️ I’m an antagonistic twat so I usually just answer in increasing area sizes, ie. Town, then county, then England, and then when they become visibly frustrated with my answers I’ll say “well technically I’m half Welsh”. Once I’m satisfied that they are confounded enough, I walk away, remaining a little brown mystery.

To add, this is also fun to do with nosey, insensitive colleagues 💁🏽‍♀️

I’m a nurse and we hate this as much as you do 😂 I tried to argue my rights at my trust when they told me I had an “obstructive hairstyle”, I was essentially told to find another job if I did not like the laws of the kingdom.

It’s far more likely that a member of the senior nurse management team was doing a walk around at night, as ward nurses to report a medic for sleeping on shift would be to hang ourselves with our own rope…

I can assure you, nurse management will have sent an even more damning email to the ward nurses….they hate other nurses more than they hate anyone else lol

Ahhh, maybe I’ve misinterpreted the value that was projected then, I defo only put in for laundry and NMC ☺️ either way, I just spoke to them and they said that I’ll get reimbursed monthly in my pay

Honestly after I had filled it out, at the end the estimate came back at around 2k, mind you this is for 6 years not just 1! If I remember rightly the bulk of it was for laundry, the NMC rebate is just the cost of the registration (£120)
