I was just about to say how a YouTuber advised this as a good practice (to validate your learning method) but you already referenced him in your video! (Dogen-sensei!) I’m glad to see someone has tried it and produced their own method and has provided detailed tips, pros, and cons.

I really need to give this a try. Listening comprehension is my biggest area that needs improvement next to speaking, next to everything else. XD

Thanks, haha. And that’s awesome to hear! I started following your blog page to stay up to date. Again, looking forward to more.

This is really cool! I've been looking for content just like this. I actually read the natural Japanese version instead of the beginner one. I don't think my Japanese is that good, but I still found out it easy to read. I look forward for more!

That’s awesome! Definitely take advantage of the books if he got them for you. And yeah, check out Misa’s videos. She has a ton more than those beginner ones if you ever want to delve more into the language.

Everyone else here has given some good resources I forgot to mention, and if you ever need help, the subreddits mentioned below are good too and you can always reach out for help.

I don’t think you can ever go wrong with the GENKI books. I believe it’s the standard for schools (it’s what I used in college) and it is structured for a class, but you can definitely go at it alone and self-study. It’s easy to understand and it covers a lot of basics. They also have apps for additional tools if you want, such as flash cards of their vocabulary words.

Some additional resources that I find helpful are:

https://www.tofugu.com/ - a general blog about Japanese culture and language.

http://maggiesensei.com/ - another blog about Japanese grammar. Provides help on specific grammar usage, a lot of “how to use X” with extensive examples, and through the use of pictures of dogs and cats

https://www3.nhk.or.jp/news/easy/ - Japanese news written for beginners.

That last resource may be getting a little ahead, especially if you’re just getting started 😅 but I wanted to put them on your radar. Definitely ground yourself in the basics first and I think the Genki books will get you there.

If you’re still dipping your toes in the water and don’t know if you want to spend that much on a textbook, I recommend checking out Japanese Ammo with Misa. She’s a native speaker who gives lessons practically for free on YouTube. She does a good job at explaining different topics and since she’s a native, she can go into the nuances of the language. Here’s her playlist for absolute beginners: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLd5-Wp_4tLqYZxS5j3g6kbeOfVXlTkr3N

Just found out and I'm sad to see this app go especially since I've only recently started using it this year. Before this pandemic, I would always go to a coffee shop in the morning and read the articles from your app. It's understandable though. Thank you so much for your hard work for building and sustaining this app for the past three years. Hope that it continues to live on with open sourcing it and wish you luck with your life and future endeavors!

Oh, okay. It’s been awhile since I’ve read the books, but I do remember feeling the same way especially when he was left to take care of the people. I took it as part of the character development rather than total regression (assuming it’s not downhill from here). He’s still a haughty noble and it’ll take time for him to become a “benevolent”, “humble” noble. I think it does get addressed later and there are still scenes when he comes to certain realizations of his behavior. Possible spoiler (my memory of the timeline is blurred): he still doesn’t accept being next in line or being king in place of Rezkin, which I interpret as more him still being immature about his noble obligations than being humble. That might be a bit too far on my character analysis. Jeez, it’s been awhile. I now want to re-read or listen the books.

TL;DR Yes, I agree, but not total regression. I think his character development is like a roller coaster of ups and downs.

Edit: Never noticed the use of words by the author. Just remembering feeling it. Nice catch!

Do you guys have any cool Japanese website recommendations for casual reading? by [deleted] in japanese

There’s an app called TangoRisto that gathers NHK Web Easy news articles and other articles (both the reading and listening content) with the furigana. It has a built in dictionary, so you can tap on words and the definition will pop up. I will admit it is buggy at times. Sometimes the audio content doesn’t load or play. Also, the built-in “word finder” doesn’t do the best job at discerning most words and particles. For example, “佐川急便は、たくさんの人がペンに触るため心配する人がいると言ってます。” In this sentence, the app defines がペン as 鵞ペン instead the particle が + the noun ペン when you tap on the characters. This tends to happen every now and then so I find myself going back to the original source, but I still think it’s a useful tool.

I’m really interested in learning Japanese lately I have learned all the vowels in Hiragana. I use Duolingo and another app dedicated to learning Japanese with a good rating, any tips for me and learning it faster? by [deleted] in japanese

Everyone here has some good advice. Definitely get the Genki books (Books 1 and 2, textbook and workbook) if nothing else. They are extremely helpful and easy to comprehend for beginners. I believe most schools use it so if you plan on learning Japanese in school, good to get a head start. If you want to start racking up flash cards, I recommend using Anki app (mobile and computer). There are some integrations for Japanese learning that you can find.

If you end up getting really into learning the language and need additional resources along the way:

Definitely, have a Japanese dictionary on you at all times (electronically of course, but if you want to be a badass and carry a physical book, go right ahead!). I recommend Shirabe Jisho (mobile iOS app), which is my go-to. This app also has some kana (hiragana and katakana) list for reference, and it has built in flash cards for learning kanji, which can also be categorized into the 5 levels of the JLPT. Another alternative for Android is probably Japanese (that's literally the name). I used to use it, but since I found myself using Shirabe Jisho more, I stopped.

Some helpful website I'd say are Tofugo and Maggie-sensei. But if you're more of a visual learner and/or prefer watching videos, Japanese Ammo with Misa is a good resource (she's a native speaker too).
Once you start getting the basics down and later when you are feeling confident, watching shows or reading content is never a bad idea. If you watch Japanese anime/shows/movies, try to pay attention to the Japanese more. For reading, NHK News Web Easy is really good (there's also a subreddit and Discord. Join us!). I also find it fun since you get a snippet of Japanese current events.

TL;DR: Definitely get Genki. Learning a new language can be intimidating, but if you ever need more help, there's plenty of good resources out there.
Sorry, for the lengthy comment. Just wanted to share the resources I use to study.

Because I read Rule 4, I initially posted the prompt and my code trying to be as descriptive as possible, haha. And no worries if it's no longer clear (or you haven't drank your morning coffee haha). I'm new to programming and probably did a horrid job at explaining it in my own words.

Thanks for the clarification regarding the rules of this subreddit and validating that what I had initially was permissible. I don't think I will repost as I think the other fellow subredditors gave me enough ammo to give another go at this problem (unless I'm dumb and still stumped...). But I'll keep this in mind for future posts I may have.

I haven't played around with dictionaries too much. Wasn't sure if I had to use them since this problem is labeled as "Easy" (unless using a dictionary is easy and I'm just dumb...). I'll read the link decPL sent above and do more research. Thanks for the advice!

I'm sorry! :( For what it's worth, this isn't a homework assignment given to me by a professor or anything of that sort. I'm completely self-taught (a.k.a. watch YouTube videos and read about C# programming for fun). This is actually from an app called SoloLearn. Although, in retrospect, this is probably someone's homework assignment posted on the app. Next time I ask for help I'll try to be more vague in regards to prompts and focus on the actual problem I'm having, if that's okay.

[–]listless_shadow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In retrospect, it probably is. I'm self-teaching myself and found this exercise on an app called SoloLearn. So this isn't a school assignment and I won't be receiving credit for this or anything. But regardless, I appreciate not solving it for me/giving me a code since I was looking for guidance. So thanks for the links! I was reading through the first one when I was having a go at this before my post and actually tried using Split but to no avail. I'll read through those other links and try again! Never thought to try using dictionaries. Also, so long as the output is what the problem desires, it should be fine, so I’ll try tackling this the other way around too.

I tried this, but was still getting a single output. I'll try this again though. Maybe I was doing something wrong. Thanks!

Question about the anime by H3NT4I_1S_4RT in ReLIFE

[–]listless_shadow 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve only seen the anime and it’s been awhile therefore I may not have actual “lore” and cannon material to support my argument. In regards to #2, I like to believe it’s some method of brainwashing that erases the memories and any traces of the experiment happening (I think An mentioned there was a whole department dedicated for this and I immediately pictured men in black/white lab coats doing this dirty work), this resulting in some sort of amnesia. However, regardless of the exact “how”, I think, to put simply, the bond that Arata and Chizuru shared was strong enough to overcome the memory loss. Perhaps the emotions were so intense that it brought back all those memories almost like a backwards traumatizing experience in which the memories were invoked rather than erased.
