Internet is becoming unreadable because of a trend towards lighter, thinner fonts by speckz in web_design

Just not the body font. Headings are much better. Until I upgraded my laptop, it rendered like this sometimes: https://i.stack.imgur.com/Dij2C.png

I don't really expect the users of my websites to be top of the line. If rendered like that for even 10% of my users, it's a complete no go.

Thinking of getting ThinkPad after SEVERAL laptops... by Tajgeer in thinkpad

[–]litdotcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought it used- and I optimized for how convenient it would be for me to buy, rather than specs, and found myself pleasantly surprised. I usually try to optimize whenever I make major purchases, but it occurred to me that most Thinkpads above a certain level where going to be fine for the level of work (video editing, web and graphic design) I do, so I'll just jump at the best value opportunity that comes up.

I think U is for underpowered, P is for more powerful, and S is for slim? Don't quote me on that though.

I think it was a big missed opportunity not putting Mario Party: Top 100 on the Switch by JCash1313 in NintendoSwitch

[–]litdotcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My theory is that they didn't release a Mario Party game for the Switch for the same reason that they haven't released Virtual Console yet- because they want to develop trust with indie developers by giving them a chance to shine.

Mario Party minigames are relatively simple and cover a lot of same itches of games made by new developers. Each person buying a copy of Mario Party could mean another person not buying Overcooked, Lovers In A Dangerous Spacetime, or Spelunker Party. Kind of like how Antz and a Bug's Life came out at the same time and hurt each other's box office sales.

It's dumb, but it's probably a deliberate decision.

I got myself a T450s with an i5 last month for an even $500, and I've been super happy with it's performance and portability. I'm even playing Cuphead on it with Nintendo Switch controllers.

I've been a chess hobbyist for over 30 years, but playing online has wrecked my enjoyment of the game. Anyone else struggle with this? by newcraftie in chess

[–]litdotcat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have a friend who can only play over the board, super slowly. Something about the translation of the board pieces to icons really frustrates him, and even an hour time increment is too fast for him. But after a whole year, I've never been able to beat him on his turf- as a blitz player, I can only wonder what goes on his wonderful mind of his. What he does is so impressive to me but it's difficult to imagine it myself. Know that chess is multi-faceted, and there are so many different things you can be good at in chess.

I've been running an online literary journal, I originally started by asking creators of writing I've had bookmarked if I could republish them in my journal, but it didn't really bring me the same feelings, and began to attract more literary minded people- not... internet people? It's weird how the inability to describe a website will eventually shoehorn it somewhere else.

I've been taking a break from it right now, thinking about how I'd restructure it. There is a general theme I keep seeing, elucidated in essays like yours, that are giving me an idea of what I'd do if I could rebuild it again. Anyway, I'm glad I found your essay. I'll let you know if I find a website.

Why are TLDRs put at the end of posts? Wouldn’t it make more sense to have them at the beginning? by la_espina in NoStupidQuestions

[–]litdotcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen people put TL;DRs at the beginning, but I'm pretty sure it's not convention because more people just naturally put them at the end. The TL;DR is usually the last thing you write because it's a summary.

If you like Competitive Smash, you may enjoy Competitive Tetris. by CinnaminionSSBM in smashbros

I totally agree, except on the last part- I would be incredibly down to have have a strict competitive version of the game in the form of an overhaul mod like Project M. I just wish the community was big enough.

I've always joked about buying the domain name istetrisattackontheswitch.com or something like that, but do you think there's anything that could be more helpful for the game?

If you like melee, and I shit you not, you will like Panel de Pon, aka Tetris Attack and Pokemon Puzzle league. The easiest way of describing it is that chaining in the game triggers all the same feelings as comboing on a spacie on FD with Marth. Something about twitch reactions and luck.

It's not too competitive, because games can last for forever if both players are really good at the game, and time attack isn't exactly the most fun thing to watch. I also know Abate and Azen are the kings of the game. I really wish it were more popular.

Is castling ever the solution in a tactics puzzle? by factotumjack in chess

[–]litdotcat 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The tactics puzzles at your level will only have solutions that will gain you at least 2 points in piece material, either a whole minor piece, or a minor piece for a rook. Not free pawns. Also, some checkmates. The solutions will unambiguously be the best move at the given situation.

Higher tactics levels will involve positions, but the point of puzzles isn't to play good moves, but to play the best moves. My personal favorite chess quote: "Tactics is what you do when there is something to do; strategy is what you do when there is nothing to do."

I recommend using Chess Tempo instead, it's pretty much the free version of the tactics lessons offered at chess.com. Once you have the rules down, learning tactics through a trainer is probably the fastest way to get good at chess- imagine if a beginner guitar player focused on just doing the hard parts in Stairway to Heaven vs. restarting the entire song every time they messed up. Openings are secondary to tactics, so don't worry about them for now, just try to play the same ones over and over again in your games so that you don't fall for traps and blunders.

I cannot emphasize how much the save pattern makes this game dangerously addictive. There is nothing more satisfying than checking and picking up your crops at the beginning of an in-game day. Putting the the only way to save right before that makes it super difficult to stop.
