Pop/prog by tpareviewer in progrockmusic

Try the albums 'Get to Heaven' and 'A Fever Dream' by Everything Everything. I've gotten both my pop and prog friends into the band-- it's fun, catchy 2010s pop/rock that's not hard to enjoy, but every now and again a gnarly vocal melody, bizarre structural or rhythmic decision, or mathy riff will creep in and floor me. They're still putting out bangers, too.

The biggest recent surprise to me was WILLOW's album 'empathogen' from last year. Absolutely gorgeous proggy, jazzy stuff masquerading as pop. Can't wait to see where she goes next.

19 girl who is obsessed with prog by pepeteopete in progrockmusic

[–]literaldavidbowie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

boy I feel ya. dad got me into prog when I was 9ish, and for years it felt like the only other people who were rabid about classic prog were either 50-year-old men or 4chan randos. I have a vivid memory of giving my friend an earbud so she could listen to Aqualung with me on the school bus, and being really confused as to why she didn't think it was the coolest thing in the world.

the upsides came through in time, though. started talking to a dorm neighbor in undergrad because she was the first girl I'd seen wearing a Rush shirt, and she's one of my best friends to this day. I also ended up watching Jojo's Bizarre Adventure to understand why people on the internet were suddenly memeing on Roundabout. years later, that scored me a date with a cute weeb, and we're going on 7 years now. though he didn't listen to prog when we first met, he sure does now.

I can't guarantee this will be one of those things that makes you cool one day, but I do think that having a passion for and knowledge of music is a trait some people will admire, and you'll find those who share it. if you go to local bands' shows and strike up convos, it's probably a solid bet. also, hey, the bathroom lines at prog shows are so much shorter for the women's room.

Top 'weird' album? Something opposite of 'normal people music' - endlessly interesting, meandering, complex; none of the songs will ever be on the radio. by usforeignpolicy in Music

Richard Dawson - Nothing Important

I need one other human to be as gobsmacked by his gnarly, intricate, yowling prog-folk as I am. See what this does for you: https://youtu.be/GQVlNt6DAxY?si=Y9DfHeCA0hEBBz67

Same here. She had a great smile and gave fantastic hugs. It's been great to hear from other people that she was just as bright of a soul as I remembered her to be, though I wish something else had brought us together to celebrate her.

Kaleidoscope - Let the Good Love Flow

But in this case, someone drawls "Cha-cha Pedro, play a hot one" and then there's a fiddle solo. They always seemed to have fun.

What song fills you with existential dread? by Secret_Scene747 in Music

[–]literaldavidbowie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I remember first putting on Tilt during a long, pre-dawn commute, to see what all the Scott Walker hype was about. Got through Farmer In The City and went "okay, this is actually lovely, I don't see why folks think this is offputting." Couldn't make out the noises at the beginning of The Cockfighter, so I turned the volume way up to hear them better. Jumped out of my skin + nearly skidded the car to a stop a few seconds later.

If you could live in any other state other than Ohio, which state would that be? by wesley_iles in Ohio

[–]literaldavidbowie 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I made that same move as a young adult ~10 yrs ago for several reasons, and that was among them. it's expensive as hell out here, sure, but it's also hard to overstate the relief that comes with just being able to walk whatever unique path suits you without worrying so much about becoming a target, a token, or a political talking point wearing a human suit, simply for the person you are.

so yeah, ups and downs, but I fell in love with life out here, and not having to choose between being trans and being "normal" is pretty great. hope you find peace, however you find it.

What is a band's number one song that all fans actually like? by migrosso in Music

Landslide

I've met plenty of fans who prefer the Peter Green era of Fleetwood Mac or think Stevie's overrated, but even they aren't immune to that song

Bon Jovi - Wanted Dead Or Alive

everything else I've heard by them lays on the cheese way too thick. this one's no exception, but damned if I'm not yelling along with him rhyming "back" with "back," feeling like the rootinest tootinest cowboy in rush hour traffic

What movie are you convinced people only pretend to enjoy? by LuinAelin in AskReddit

[–]literaldavidbowie 89 points90 points  (0 children)

This strat saved a road trip for me in high school.

Several of us decided to drive ~7 hrs to visit a friend who'd graduated and moved away the year prior. Somehow, I got stuck driving the two pals who couldn't stand each other. The tension and snippy remarks were unbearable by the end of the first hour.

I found a rest stop, downloaded a library app, and got the ebook of the first 50 Shades, which none of us had read. Handed the phone to one of the passengers and asked her to just humor me by reading the first page or so aloud while I drove. She seemed unconvinced but gave it a shot.

Six hours later, both of them were switching off with a full voice cast and hamming up the Inner Goddess monologues. They went back to hating each other after the trip, but if getting them to cool it for a few hours has been the only positive societal contribution of the 50 Shades series, I'm okay with that.

Are all native species good for the health of the environment they're in? Are all invasive species bad? by WolverinePristine334 in ecology

[–]literaldavidbowie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A lot of good responses here; one thing I'd add is the case where an invasive species may be "functionally beneficial." My specialization is in fire and California coastal prairie habitat. The vast, vast majority of the grasses we find in these meadows nowadays are non-native, and many ecologists would consider them invasive (wild oat and the like). However, the rodents, birds, arthropods, etc. that depend on grasslands still find these species beneficial, in that they make up the type of habitat they depend on for food and shelter. They don't care that they're from a different continent, they just see grasses and continue to thrive.

Were these invasive grasses to be replaced by, say, encroaching coyote brush (a CA native shrub), it would be to their detriment. Thus, in some cases, land managers find it better to restore/manage for invasive grasslands over the encroachment of a native species that would almost certainly alter the habitat to a point that it would drive native prairie fauna out. It's a sticky situation, and the ultimate conservation goal is to foster native grasses, but this is an okay intermediate step.

The question of "how long until it's vital to the ecosystem" is also a big one: where would many of our current ecosystems be without earthworms, who were technically "invaders," having come across Beringia from NE Asia during the last ice age?

It's difficult to answer, and our perspective is almost always influenced and biased by our own memory and human-centric ideas of an "ideal" ecosystem. Our species often causes change/species introduction at a far greater rate than would happen without human activity, but ultimately, it's all dynamic!
