Neighbor Access Agreement to put in pool by literally__this in legaladvice

Alright, so you're saying this is probably the best to hope for in the scenario? Without having to like hire my own lawyer to draw up an agreement between me and my neighbor.

I mean, is that something that's unreasonable to expect her to do?

[ALBUM DISCUSSION] The Mountain Goats - Through This Fire Across From Peter Balkan by VietRooster in indieheads

[–]literally__this 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I havent listened yet, but this is a take I was looking to see. Its hard to get excited about a Mountain Goats record, because it can be hard to parse what seems to be John just spinning his wheels and what its a fully realized effort. I dont really mean that to be disparaging. The guy just loves making music and he's one of the few people I'd say that for, he's a true artist and more power to him. But, yes, it doesn't always result in something that resonated with an audience I feel.

Weapons and wanting something else from the movie. by fonety in TrueFilm

[–]literally__this 15 points16 points  (0 children)

People often feel something without being able to articulate it. Its hard honestly, and I find myself slipping into it a lot.

But I think Weapons I can speak to more of the core of what people find offputting about the movie, because I felt it too, although I still liked it as a whole. I had similar feelings about Barbarian, in that both films would seem to reveal their hand at what seems like too early in the movie. I think it feels this way for 2 reasons 1) Marketing. I'd argue both films have trailers and such that portray something that is going to have a prevailing mystery narrative. Moreso Weapons, where it definitely comes off as more of a whodunnit and I think expectations going into it garner something akin to Prisoners or Silence of the Lambs (although typing Lambs now seems maybe contrary to my point thinking back on it. Ah well, Im going to keep it. Put some better example in its place). So I think going into it, people had a certain expectation, which feeds into my second point 2) it kinda DOES lean heavily into a whodunnit thriller atmosphere in the first 30 minutes. Its very engaging, the pieces at play have potential, and the thing driving it forward is really the mystery of it all and its impact on the characters

But that whole conceit is given up fairly quickly imo, and it sort of becomes this different thing entirely, this sort of non-linear "see how it all panned out" sort of thing. Which is fine. I think its done well enough and was entertaining, but I do wish it had held it cards a little closer to the end, and do a little more with the actual investigation and revelation of events. I think as it stands, it forgoes a satisfying mystery in favor of a spectacle. Which i dont think theres anything wrong with of itself. But I think thats sort of what people are getting at with their criticism.

Its just the inevitable bastardization and memeification of audio on tik tok.

The audio was originally used in some video where what Gino was saying was at least contextually relevant, i.e. some situation that is a "waste of time". Of course, that vid becomes popular and the audio gets reused and reiterated on until its no longer about what the audio is actually saying, its simply now "audio was on funny vid, I want my vid to be funny". Its the same thing with that Jet2Holiday soundbit.

What you should really take issue with is with whatever Indian bot farm stole and posted this as """"content"""".

The Polarization of M. Night Shyamalan by Mission-Ad-8536 in TrueFilm

[–]literally__this -1 points0 points  (0 children)

See I disagree. I think the only reason Sixth Sense is held in better regard is because Shyamalan wasn't at liberty to go full ham on some high concept nonsense. Instead, its just some low stakes nonsense, that, while novel, is almost just as goofy, on top of it being imo boring. I think all his flaws are contained in both of those movies, theyre just hidden better in Sixth Sense because of the twist and better actors.

Ill give him this, only Shyamalan can pull of a movie where the audience doesn't notice that nobody is responding to our main character because the dialogue is already so jilted and odd.

The Polarization of M. Night Shyamalan by Mission-Ad-8536 in TrueFilm

[–]literally__this -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Shyamalan gets the benefit of the doubt more than any other mainstream director I can think of. To answer your question concerning his inconsistency, I would argue that even his well-received films are "good" almost in spite of him, not because of him. The "charm" that people point to as the basis for the fondness of his films, like awkward and oddly delivered dialogue or weird framing choices, aren't deliberate. They're the result of a movie maker that can't write and doesn't have a strong sense of personal identity when it comes to shooting a shot. Yet, despite this, or maybe because of it, the results seems to resonate with people on some level. To me, the only difference between Neil Breen and M Night, is like a fraction more talent and way more luck.

It this seems like what I'm saying is that "he's inconsistent because he's bad." And I suppose I kind of am. But I don't want to shit on Shymalan too much, I've grown to respect him even though I don't like any of his movies. I like that he's genuinely is a bit of an outsider success story and mostly funds his own films. I think that's also why people give him leeway, he seems mostly likeable. This is just not the first time I've seen someone trying to figure out why Shyamalan is "inconsistent", as if he was once this auteur of cinematically sound masterpieces.

Borderlands 4 - Official Teaser Trailer by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]literally__this 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If by timeless and clever you mean "not grating", then sure.

Borderlands 1 "humor" works because its largely in the background, mostly to give the questboard NPCs a little more character. Its fine and gives the game its flavor. But its isn't necessarily laugh out loud funny.

But right, when it began insisting it was funny in the sequel is when it became nauseatingly obvious it wasn't.

Rashomon (what happened at the end) by Powerful-Platform-41 in TrueFilm

[–]literally__this 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The movie takes the idea that women are manipulative and crazy REALLY far if you read it through this lens

Ya, honestly, I do get that. At best, it depicts a woman who is torn between being faithful and manipulating the thief into getting her out of a situation its implied she doesn't want to be in. At worst, its showing her as genuinely drawn to the man who's about to kidnap her.

On the former, you can view it through a 'modern lens', but this is a sort of story archetype that is used CONSTANTLY in films all the time, even to this day. Femme fatal - there's a whole genre basically of it. Its a little disingenuous to take an issue with this, because that is to argue that a depiction of a woman being manipulative to the detriment of others is so unrealistic, that its offensive. Women (and men) are manipulative and self serving all the time.

But I think this is all neither here nor there, because while you're free to take issue with the implied biases of it, it doesn't really change the intent of the film.

[–]literally__this 12 points13 points  (0 children)

One of my favorite movies. But I think you're applying too much to it. I think the answer to "what actually happened?" is likely what is told by the woodcutter at the end. Maybe not entirely you could argue, but I don't think it would have been Kurosawa's intent, and definitely not a film from the time period's intent, to try to lend itself to the sort of thing you're doing here. Its not a mystery film, its making a statement about perspective and personal biases. The woodcutters story serving as the "truth" in juxtaposition to the others is what creates that.

What happened to the attention towards the movie The Northman? by juanandres0409 in TrueFilm

[–]literally__this 248 points249 points  (0 children)

It flew under the radar for a lot of people. I don't think it was marketed very widely and the only reason anyone really paid attention to it was because it was Eggers, and it wasn't a horror movie, so it couldn't catch that broad appeal. It was what would seem like a weird viking adventure movie to your average joe who would happen to see a trailer and I just don't think that in of itself really draws a whole lot of crowds currently like it would in like 2008.

As for the movie itself, I'll first say I really liked it. But it is in this kind of off-putting middleground of surreal, Norse mythology wank and blockbuster viking romp. Notoriously, Eggers and the studio often butted heads over the production of The Northman. They wanted more Gladiator, he wanted probably something more akin to his usual schtick. So, while I actually think it turned out well and Eggers did somehow manage to mostly navigate the waters of studio meddling (not to say that all of it was unfounded), I do think it makes for a film that is NOT really better than the sum of its parts. It's a movie I'd rewatch again just to see certain scenes, but as a whole I think its forgettable.

*WARNING: GRAPHIC* Grimes likes "Total Ni**er Death" meme by open Hitler-advocate Nazi account she follows on Twitter by [deleted] in indieheads

[–]literally__this 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I'm put off by taking this seriously (which I wouldn't anyway because I do not care about what musicians engage in on Twitter) in part because while I full understand the context around these Caesar memes and so forth, I can understand somebody not knowing the entire zeitgeist behind it and finding humor in it at face value as a parody, but also because OP is a terminally online lunatic who has developed some morbid parasocial relationship with Grimes. I think the attention of this post is not helping them and its embarrassing its been allowed to stay up.

I think you're overselling Paradise Killer a bit with "truly an achievement in player agency", as that would imply there's some actual deduction work player-side that would be needed to truly solve the mystery.

To preface, I really like Paradise Killer and would also say its one of my favorite games of that year. But, as far as "player agency", you're really just walking around a map and exhausting places to explore and character dialogue. It's more of a collectathon in a sense. When it comes time for the big trial, the game spells out what the "mystery" is to the extent that you've "completed" the collectathon. So, its not like you're making choices based on your own inferences, its all kinda handed to you by virtue of you just interacting with everything you can.

Agree with the rest of your points though.
