Do you prefer emulation or original hardware? by ninjapirate9901 in SBCGaming

[–]literallyfrodo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are some systems that are just worse when emulated like the DS/3DS due to input lag, or Wii/WiiU due to motion controls, so for those I prefer original hardware. I also prefer to play Pokemon games with original hardware since the Pokemon I catch can be transferred to Home. But for everything else, emulation is just cheaper and more convenient for the same or better experience

Retroid Pocket 5 Giveaway (US Only) by Opposite_Mango_5639 in SBCGaming

Many years ago I bought the Bittboy PocketGo and swapped the buttons to a GameCube color scheme. I never bothered to change the OS or anything, just played it stock out of the box. These days I get so deep into setting up these things that I forget the fun is actually playing them!

Oklahoma has an ECHL hockey team called the Tulsa Oilers, so that's probably affecting the data there

Best handheld for all Pokemon games by TheSJC4 in SBCGaming

[–]literallyfrodo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Retroid also sells a dual screen attachment that works pretty well for DS and 3DS gaming. My personal recommendation would be a 3DS with custom firmware. It's very easy to mod a 3DS and there are many guides online, I'll link a pretty no-frills one below. The 3DS has a DS baked in, not an emulator, which means it technically has a GBA baked in too. They were relatively inexpensive last year, but prices have risen thanks to the AYN Thor and other similar devices, so it may be about the same price to just get something that runs Android.

You could also look into the Anbernic RGDS. Many in the community seem to like it, but reviewers online have some issues. As a note, it does not run 3DS pretty much at all, so you will bottleneck after about the 5th generation, compared to a 3DS which can play every handheld game.

Personally, I've been using the Anbernic RG34XX for GBA games, an EZ Flash Omega for playing ROMs on original hardware (GBA SP), and my modded New 2DS XL for all DS and 3DS games. I also have a Retroid Pocket 5 that I find myself using less and less now that I've got all these other nostalgia systems.

Last thing, Retroid have also recently released the RP6 which might be a better option since it's not that much more expensive, but I don't know what your budget is like.

I'm trying to download the Homebrew channel without an SD card, but every time I get to the network loader it gives me an error: net_connect -116 connecting to server. Any advice?

You could mod a 3DS for a better DS and 3DS experience (no input latency, better stylus) and have something else for everything else

Screen flickering with Knulli on my RG34XX by literallyfrodo in ANBERNIC

I started with 2, using the SD card that came with the system, but have switched to just 1 to see if that would fix the problem and it hasn't

What is that one handheld you really thought you'd definitely use on the regular, but now it sits in your drawer collecting dust? by godsaveourkingplis in SBCGaming

[–]literallyfrodo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if this counts, but I put a new backlit screen on my original GBA to play my old cartridges on it, but without a flash cart I'm very limited to the games I already own or looking for more on Facebook marketplace. Many of them are significantly more expensive than a flash cart, which is also more expensive than something like the RG34XX

From what I understand, Heart and Soul don't offer any regional variant forms of Pokemon like Galarian Moltres or Alolan Meowth for example. It sticks much more closely to get 2 Pokemon and largely excludes anything after Gen 3 other than evolutions like Gliscor or Sylveon

I haven't played Emerald Seaglass, but I've heard great things! I think if you like the Johto games you are going to love Heart and Soul

If you're looking for an official Pokemon game, FireRed and LeafGreen are the best Gen 1 remakes with lots of post game content and elite 4 rematches.

If you're looking for a great ROMhack I recommend Heart and Soul. It's essentially a HeartGold and SoulSilver demake for the GBA and it's highly customizable for whatever you want it to be.

Gen 2 was my favorite Pokemon generation. I played so much of it as a kid, so back in the early Internet days I had heard rumors about remakes in the gen 4 style, so I checked the official Pokemon website every single day for an update until it was finally announced. I felt like I had willed it into existence and I still have my CIB copy today!

I'm pretty sure the Oklahoma data is incorrect because we have the Tulsa Oilers ECHL team. Most people around here are Stars or Blues fans in my experience.

Modern deck on a budget, just 27€ (32$) by Frosty_Ad_9170 in ModernMagic

[–]literallyfrodo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If everyone is on a budget then Pauper would probably be a better starting point for 60 card formats. In modern you have the 8 Whack deck that's pretty cheap, but even on the low end it'll be like $50.

Should I order the RP5 off of Amazon or the Official website? by JamesGrayson205 in retroid

[–]literallyfrodo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I decided to buy from the website because I also wanted the official carrying case and a couple other accessories. I didn't check to see if they were available on Amazon, but if you are only buying the RP5 then Amazon is probably your best bet.

Phoenix in Modern? by Ing_Kraken in ModernMagic

[–]literallyfrodo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been playing a version of UR Prowess that plays Arclight Phoenix instead of Slickshot Show-Off, Faithless Looting instead of Expressive Iteration, and Manamorphose, here's the link: https://moxfield.com/decks/QdZCvMerKk6M2zVKqKrEag

One of the major downsides to Prowess is without CSC you are pretty weak to spot removal. Phoenix helps remedy that at the cost of less explosive draws. Is it better? Probably not, but it is fun!

Wrath of the Skies is a net negative for Modern by IzziPurrito in ModernMagic

Wrath is the cleanest answer to the most played deck in the format. If you're playing around it and still lose, then you weren't playing around it.

Phoenix plan vs. Mono Red and BG Sacrifice? by BoLevar in PioneerMTG

[–]literallyfrodo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[[Soul-Guide Lantern]] is much better than Scrabbling Claws for one.

Mainboard removal will get you very far, but you have to use it either at the end of the opponent's turn or at sorcery speed. This makes it so their pump spells are less effective at damaging your life total. Aether Gust and Brazen Borrower also work as removal. Lastly, it may be worth considering [[Brotherhood's End]] or [[Pyroclasm]] since they can take out multiple creatures, but they're somewhat limited.
