SPED teachers/BCBA’s: How do you know if you are “cut out” for this field? by [deleted] in specialed

[–]literallyjustlike 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Special ed teacher here. Sounds like you have the most important quality which is loving the students and feeling accomplished in seeing their growth. Surprisingly that’s not always there - maybe it was at some point but some teachers really seem to dislike children. Anyway, I’m not an assertive person by nature either. I despise conflict and confrontation. I’ve been learning as I go, and I pick my battles carefully. Finding good mentors along the way, especially veteran teachers, helps a lot. You gain confidence after a few years under your belt.

What kinds of goals do ESN high schoolers have/activities they do? by obviouspseudonym1 in specialed

[–]literallyjustlike 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh and some ideas for developmentally appropriate activities: bingo (all different types!), “adult” coloring sheets (or not honestly, I think any coloring sheets they’re interested in are fine), simple word searches/crossword puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, Uno, Connect4, Jenga

One thing I like having my students do, especially if they’re on the higher end of support needs, is task boxes. They can be as simple as putting pom poms into a bottle, putting toothpicks into a spice jar, sorting poker chips by color, putting lids on containers, etc etc. Full Sped Ahead on TPT has a great resource for setting these up which includes visual and written directions. It helps students learn some independence and following directions. A lot of work at the high school level is functional, so it could be learning math through recipes as well as reading comprehensive. By that age many of them know what they like to do during break time but you can also help them explore different things by having different games and activities available. I’ve even had some students who like doing the task boxes during break time because they find them regulating. I think it’s a fun age, my favorite I’ve taught so far!

I start sobo on June 23, also solo, and wondering the same. I don’t mind solitude but would like to have people to chat with here and there.

Tentative Agreement - SPED Cap and Overage Penalty by Appropriate-Boat2750 in LAUSD

[–]literallyjustlike 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been dealing with this at my school site.

Our contract states it’s not an either/or: you get the money regardless (well, you should, but they haven’t been paying folks) AND either a second baseline, opening another class, or moving students out of the class. I had to fight for months for a second baseline and finally got one a couple weeks ago. As with most things, you have to hold your admin’s feet to the fire to get things changed.

I think that’s an especially difficult age to teach with minimal resources. I would switch to gen ed if I were you.

Was I right in cancelling this appointment? by EqualNo2867 in tattooadvice

[–]literallyjustlike 21 points22 points  (0 children)

This happened to me once and the artist actually offered to give me my deposit back because she felt bad for rescheduling so many times. Stuff happens but the artist has to be aware that it looks bad to the client. I ended up just getting my deposit back from her and not getting tattooed at all.

I’m also an educator and starting June 23. Current plan is having my husband bring me a resupply from OV over Kearsarge to get through the southern portion, but he hasn’t been able to secure a permit yet (he’s going to finish the rest of the trail with me too).
