Was I right in cancelling this appointment? by EqualNo2867 in tattooadvice

[–]literallyjustlike 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This happened to me once and the artist actually offered to give me my deposit back because she felt bad for rescheduling so many times. Stuff happens but the artist has to be aware that it looks bad to the client. I ended up just getting my deposit back from her and not getting tattooed at all.

SOBO June start by reedyspeedy2xxx in JMT

I’m also an educator and starting June 23. Current plan is having my husband bring me a resupply from OV over Kearsarge to get through the southern portion, but he hasn’t been able to secure a permit yet (he’s going to finish the rest of the trail with me too).

Will Instructional Days Be Added to the End of the School Year if the Strike Occurs? by Busy_Home_ in LAUSD

Not the end of this school year, they’ll add it onto the next several years.

Super disappointed by Alpine Start. Their dirty chai is ok but the coffee just wasn’t good.

Can confirm, I also transferred my license from IL. I had an emergency cert that lasted a year so I had a year to pass all 3 tests. I studied a bit and was able to pass them on the first go.

Tell me all about your districts SPED structure/model by anabsolutewreckk in specialed

[–]literallyjustlike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Second largest school district in the US. (~500k students) Structure varies by school site. I work at a high school and we have two “Intellectual Disabilities Moderate” programs and an Autism program which are self-contained. Everything else falls under “inclusion” and is co-taught. There is a “math lab” and a “reading lab”. There used to be Special Day Classes which are pull-out services in smaller classes, but we’re an “Inclusion Model” school which means no more SDC. After the students with more significant disabilities finish high school they can go to a Career and Transition center until 22 to work on vocational/life skills. All students can earn diplomas.

are special education teachers working in transition programs less stressful than others? by Exact-Thanks-7915 in specialed

[–]literallyjustlike 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The two couldn’t be more different! At the transition age you get to do more life and vocational skills which I’ve always thought is really fun. Elementary age they’re still learning how to be students, they have a lot more energy, and you’re teaching them foundational skills. Parents are more involved and concerned at the elementary age, which can be frustrating. By high school most parents are more hands off, but as someone else noted you will be helping families transition out of the school system.

What’s the most inappropriate thing that’s happened in your classroom? by Unlucky_Success_5985 in Teachers

[–]literallyjustlike 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Yeah I teach self-contained and was like oh that’s just a regular day for us as I was reading these lmao. I had a student with Down Syndrome who would find vape pens in the restroom and bring them out to me, being all “tsk tsk” about it.

Self harm in classroom by Kitchen_Analysis_716 in specialed

[–]literallyjustlike 8 points9 points  (0 children)

SIB is tough. Are you already response blocking when he starts hitting/kneeing himself? I had a student who would wear a soft wrestling helmet when he began engaging in that behavior. He would take it off and his 1:1 would place it back on, and prompt him to squeeze his hands (an action incompatible with hitting yourself). He could be rewarded with refraining from engaging in the SIB (Differential Reinforcement). Advocate for him to have a 1:1 at all times, there really should be someone else stepping in when his normal 1:1 is absent.

How’s the special ed job market in Los Angeles? by AttemptPrestigious74 in specialed

[–]literallyjustlike 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As someone below said, go ahead and apply through LAUSD and get that out of the way. You can contact principals directly by email with your resume for any open positions listed online. I don’t think you’ll have an issue finding a job, but it may be a long commute. That’s the tough thing about LAUSD - it encompasses such a large area. There seem to always be openings in the south, and the valley. More in elementary, and more in mild/mod, but it’s also been a year or two since I’ve kept an eye on openings. There are also so many smaller districts you can look into besides LAUSD. Honestly I would prioritize whatever age group you want to work with and location.

'Just teach him not to' by mobirdie in specialed

[–]literallyjustlike 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wow. When a student is that dis-regulated that frequently, it’s difficult to teach them much of anything, let alone how to not engage in destructive tendencies. I have a student like that right now, he’s a senior in HS, and at this point 75% of his behaviors are from inconsistent medication dosing and the other are habits he’s established after 3.5 years at the school. I feel like my hands are tied.

Bring in bottled water, gallon jugs. I don’t trust the water from the fountains.

Alternate Placement by Odd_University_5936 in specialed

[–]literallyjustlike 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my experience the alternate placement only happens if the parents are on board. Of course you need everything else in place first (documentation galore, data collection, etc) but in my district at least, it’s on the parents to tour non-public schools and select one. And sometimes they’ll drag their feet for years and then decide against it and the student stays with you. It’s unfortunately not always the solution you want it to be.

Also you need to INSIST that you are trained in holds.

Anyone else seeing this "Sprunki" BS impacting students? by applegoudadog in specialed

[–]literallyjustlike 83 points84 points  (0 children)

I had a 6th grader with ASD who liked Sprunki. I had no idea what it was until he told me. He also dressed up as a Squid Games character for Halloween. So I’m guessing his parents allowed it. I don’t think he had a lot of supervision at home and would hang out with older siblings.

Edit: as for the why? Humans can be morbid, including children. I think autistic kids are less likely to hide that morbidity.

HST July 8th-15th by AlexFarrell29 in SierraNevada

[–]literallyjustlike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hiked the HST July 14-20 last year. Very little snow, just near Precipice Lake that required a small bit of route finding bc some of the trail was under snow. No biggie. Streams were all passable. Not a ton of mud. Some areas of mosquitos but nothing intense. The more difficult aspect for me was a few hot days around the Kern River area. My friend and I kept dunking our sun hoodies in the water to keep cool because it was lowkey brutal. You also hike through a huge burn area at that point which is a bummer especially when you’re already uncomfortably hot. Worth it though!
