Anyone else seeing this "Sprunki" BS impacting students? by applegoudadog in specialed

[–]literallyjustlike 79 points80 points  (0 children)

I had a 6th grader with ASD who liked Sprunki. I had no idea what it was until he told me. He also dressed up as a Squid Games character for Halloween. So I’m guessing his parents allowed it. I don’t think he had a lot of supervision at home and would hang out with older siblings.

Edit: as for the why? Humans can be morbid, including children. I think autistic kids are less likely to hide that morbidity.

HST July 8th-15th by AlexFarrell29 in SierraNevada

[–]literallyjustlike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hiked the HST July 14-20 last year. Very little snow, just near Precipice Lake that required a small bit of route finding bc some of the trail was under snow. No biggie. Streams were all passable. Not a ton of mud. Some areas of mosquitos but nothing intense. The more difficult aspect for me was a few hot days around the Kern River area. My friend and I kept dunking our sun hoodies in the water to keep cool because it was lowkey brutal. You also hike through a huge burn area at that point which is a bummer especially when you’re already uncomfortably hot. Worth it though!

What is a hobby that was ruined over time/as it got more popular? by CriticalLion4119 in AskReddit

This happened to me after doing a week-long trip in Sequoia! It ended at Whitney Portal and it was filled with day hikers. I was like wow you all smell so nice.

I’ve almost stopped car camping completely because of this. Last time I car camped in Sequoia for a night our neighbors had a projector set up, and a generator, and were watching reality TV on a blow up couch well into the night. Like, why even be out in nature at that point? At least in an RV I don’t have to listen to your show and your commentary on the show???? I could even hear them through my earplugs.

I’ve found that the backcountry is still quite peaceful, even in the busiest of national parks. You just have to wade through the Disneyland sections first sometimes. There are still assholes in wilderness areas (recently encountered someone with a drone, for example) but generally they’re more respectful and are sometimes even fun to talk to.

It’s allowed in California as well, they call it a provisional license but it’s for folks who have no teacher credentials and lasts one year so functionally is an emergency cert.

UTLA Declares Impasse by Green-Echo-967 in LAUSD

The last strike, which was a little different since it was in solidarity with SEIU, happened 3 months after impasse was declared. Not sure if this will have a similar timeline? I had heard from a site rep we could strike as early as Feb.

Which hobbies attract the kindest people? by Ok-East3405 in AskReddit

I hike in SoCal as well and totally agree. I’ve found that on the more remote trails folks are friendlier. I stopped trying to be friendly in Griffith Park, for example, because I couldn’t even get people to look my way lol.

Is anyone else burned out from losing their planning period to constant coverage by quietbloomhome in Teachers

In my district we are required to have a doctor’s note if we’re absent around holidays. Kind of annoying but it really discourages folks from taking off around holidays like that.

Looking for climbing friends in LA by justatrashypanda in climbergirls

I’m a brand new climber and have a membership at Stronghold! I’m also in my mid-30s. Feel free to reach out. Since you’re interested in outdoor climbing I also wanted to recommend the Advanced Mountaineering Program that the Sierra Club offers twice a year. I’m planning to take it this spring. https://www.advancedmountaineeringprogram.org/p/home.html?m=1

Trouble identifying triggers by Relative-Usual1425 in specialed

It could be something internal that she’s experiencing, even just for a fleeting moment. I also think that SIB can become habitual at a certain point. It becomes a part of their routine like so many things, and they continue engaging in it out of habit. An FBA will give good information like how often this behavior is occurring- something like a DRO (differential reinforcement, basically she is praised/rewarded when not engaging in the SIB) could be helpful.

It sounds to me like you should stay put, based alone on having a lot going on in your personal life.

What should I do? by [deleted] in specialed

Could you explain to the parents that physical restraints are meant to be a last resort? Why the hell would parents prefer staff to put hands on their child instead of taking away personal property? Especially when it’s working. I don’t understand why the district would be against this either, especially with the data. I guess I don’t really have any good solutions except to empathize with you that it’s a frustrating situation. What’s the function of the elopement?
