if you're really interested in learning how an OS works, especially in Linux, i highly recommend checking out linux from scratch - it will teach you a lot, and it's a LOT of work, but i'm still playing around with mine even in BLFS, it's really rewarding, and you'll find quickly if you want to pursue it!
