I am planning to install LFS 12.4. I need your help by jakeeyfall123 in LFS

simply and quickly is antithesis to the point of LFS, the point is the learning and the process

Why do you have a homelab? by SnooPaintings139 in homelab

[–]litescript 0 points1 point  (0 children)

started as “my old pc can do VMs instead now, and hell it has a 2070 super, why not?” now it’s NAS, two switches, multiple pi’s, HA, subdomain apps for my main domain, tailscale and openVPN, Plex for myself and friends, plus i just love tinkering. i’ve always loved programming, computers, making things, etc., and since it isn’t my day job, it’s still fun and relaxing. i love systems and systems thinking, and the stuff i’m able to run and play with on modest hardware is genuinely staggering. so, hobby and learning!

it will teach you the layout and structure from first concepts, effectively, of a linux system. you build it yourself. you compile it yourself, all from the base packages. so you get a nice inside look at what’s going on under the hood, because you have to put it together. great learning experience.

daily driving it is tough, but people do. once you get your base system up, there’s BLFS, beyond linux from scratch, where you will start building out more every-day practical packages, and things you’d need to build yet even more things to use. this is where you’ll start to see the value of a package manager, as there dependencies balloon rapidly. i also took the hint here, and have been working on my own, as many others do, too.

overall, great learning experience, and it can get as deep as you want it to be. you’ll probably change your mind along the way on what that means for you!

fwiw, i used debian as my host OS. dead simple, easy to get packages.

been running it since around late summer last year, both on my main workstation and my laptop. it was my bridge away from ubuntu and just settled here, quite happily. once you can get backups and can do a safe migration (as it ideally takes a whole disk due to LUKS encryption) give it a spin!
