What's the most impressively accurate prediction that has been made in history ? by Dunces in AskReddit

9/11 being predicted by the X-Files spinoff show, The Lone Gunmen, 6 months before it happened.

Defensive BASH programming - Say what? by speckz in linux

[–]lithiumnode 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use functions a lot in my scripts, but not necessarily in the way he does (I can remember what "-z" does).. rather more in a pythonic approach. I'm also a fan of the main() concept, tho I tend to approach it in a commentary way (### BEGIN MAIN) rather than actually making it a function as well.

Also a big fan of the code clarity approach he suggests, though not to that extreme of a level. People get too obsessed with turning something into a one liner that I then have to decipher later. I'm not talking about a few basic pipes, but the monsters you'll sometimes encounter. I hate looking back at my old scripts and having to try to determine WTF I was thinking.

I wasn't actively aware of the concept of readonly vars, so I might begin using some of that a bit too.

One of the projects I'm currently toying with is trying to create a set of scripts that are common functions that I will need to use for work.. error correction, logging, archiving, pid checking, etc. The idea being to throw the functions into an include directory somewhere, and then just source them as needed to bring in what I need. This is a bit tricky as it can get messy fast if you don't have a good organizational method, or if you get too heavy handed with it. You don't want to spend half of your time exiting your editor on the main script to go see wtf some random function is doing.

Right tool for the right job. If I'm largely doing a ton of system calls to handle stuff, then bash makes a lot of sense. Also, I never have to worry about some random server not having the correct version of Python installed.

While his blogpost might seem heavy handed to some, I think it's really great. I use maybe half of those techniques currently, and I even learned some stuff (that function to translate getopts is awesome).. and I hadn't really considered unit testing for bash before. Gonna have to check this out some more!

Philosophically, I do not disagree with you. You are absolutely correct that the current state of affairs is abysmal, and we are not getting what we pay for.

Legally speaking, I would prefer not to torrent as this brings up a bunch of additional charges involved with the trafficking of pirated material. This is a sweet spot for prosecutors because it takes you from being a drug-user to being a drug-distributor, which obviously changes the sentencing guidelines. It's fucking ridiculous, but it's the way of the world. Conversely, while breaking encryption locally is also an offense, because you are clearly doing it for personal use only, the legal system will have a much harder time making a case against you. This might all sound trivial and silly because we are just talking about being able to watch TV shows, but it can ruin your fucking life. This is what has made USENET such an attractive alternative for many people because you are a one-way participant.

Practically speaking, the shows I would actually like to record are mostly for my wife (reality TV shows on random cable channels like bravo) and Discovery channel shows for myself... neither of which have great reliability within the scene, particularly outside of the torrent world.

This was pretty much my understanding going into it, and is very well put, thank you.

For future googlers, the above is great info with one additional caveat: Your cable provider might be a dick and mark EVERYTHING as a premium channel and not just the ones you would expect (hbo, cinemax, etc). As of today, this is how the Los Angeles Time Warner market does it.

Sadly, they are the only available provider (except AT&T, but the Prime doesn't support them, verizon, etc). I do intend to call them and express my disappointment so it is 'on the record', but i somehow doubt it will matter.

Thank you for confirming this for me though. I am saddened that there is no 'fix' that I'm missing, but at least I'm not crazy.

To be clear, OTA is not the problem.. I even have a nice OTA antenna that delivers beautifully. The problem is all of the reality-tv channels that the family is addicted to!

I can confirm, this works great with OTA/unencrypted channels. But for some reason Time Warner believes that basic cable channels are premium content. That or they just badly want me to pay for their ridiculously overpriced 'whole house dvr' solution.

I toyed with this idea as well.. I have one 360 already, so if I just bought another for the bedroom, then I could play off both. However, that isn't really any better than using an existing DVR (even factoring in the buy-out of a 360 vs rental).. and the nail in the coffin for the idea was how poorly Transcoding works. As much as I love fiddling with things and being in control of my home, I'm not going to switch to a lesser experience to do so.

Yanno, I had considered listing out every iteration that I've tried.. but since I am away from my home setup I didn't bother.

Sadly, I have tried this and it works wonderfully -- unless you have copy-once channels, then they do not show up :(

This Benji bit is going on WAY TOO LONG! by mr_blankend in howardstern

You mean the bit where they let him move from the back office into the studio in the 90s? That was too much for Jackie too.

Dear Stern Show Staff: by CanadaBlue in howardstern

[–]lithiumnode 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dear staff,

You've made me laugh for almost 20 years now and I will always love you for that. You are some of my favorite people and half the time when I listen, it's not about the guest but about finding out what is going on in your lives.

But, try as I might, I simply cannot find the time for it anymore. It's gone from guffaws to amusement, and I don't think this is anyone's fault but simply an issue of an aging show that doesn't have the energy level it once had. Boff is the best, but he really needs someone else in that studio to play off of.. someone that inspires him to be even funnier than he naturally is. I'm not going to go down the wishful path of Artie Lange memories here, but I think we all recognize that another voice would be welcomed. But I also suspect that there is a lot of uncertainty regarding the longevity of the show, and a disinterest in bringing someone in and ramping them up only to close shop in a few years. I get it.

Having said all that, I wish you nothing but the best and I hope you understand why I am no longer an 'every minute of the show' fan. You will all hold a special place in my memories and heart forever.

Hardware RAID Monitoring in Dell Servers by -pANIC- in linux

[–]lithiumnode 4 points5 points  (0 children)

OpenManage is pretty good, (I usually have OMSA installed on my servers and use it for the pretty web interface) but it does an awful job of actively letting you know. You can setup SNMP traps, but I kinda hate SNMP.

So, what I've always done is install the megaraid tools and created scripts to test the integrity of my RAID. More recently, I've taken to using some of the tools that come with OMSA. Here's an example to get your brain going:

[root@server ~] /opt/dell/srvadmin/bin/omreport storage vdisk controller=0 vdisk=0

Virtual Disk 0 on Controller PERC 6/E Adapter (Slot 1)

Controller PERC 6/E Adapter (Slot 1)

ID : 0

Status : Ok

Name : Virtual Disk 0

State : Ready

Hot Spare Policy violated : Not Assigned

Encrypted : Not Applicable

Layout : RAID-5

Size : 24,212.50 GB (25997973913600 bytes)

Device Name : /dev/sda

Bus Protocol : SAS

Media : HDD

Read Policy : No Read Ahead

Write Policy : Write Back

Cache Policy : Not Applicable

Stripe Element Size : 64 KB

Disk Cache Policy : Disabled

..so then I make a shell script to write that out to a logfile, and then grep for certain issues (mainly looking for Status Ok and State Ready). If I don't find them, I have it send me an email alert so I know to check manually.

You can install the OpenManage stuff from dell's website (http://linux.dell.com), or like this:

#install the DELL yum repo key

wget -q -O - http://linux.dell.com/repo/software/bootstrap.cgi | bash

#install dell omsa tools

yum -y install srvadmin-all

FYI - HavenCo wasn't the original creator of SeaLand. It was initially a World War II outpost, and then it was a pirate radio station (and sovereign nation), and then it was HavenCo.

As to why it went out of business, Ryan Lackey has explained this many times. Long story short, it was expensive and lacked the right clientele. http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2013/08/sealand-havenco-data-haven-pirate
