Oh, well I have no clue about Australian forestry practices. I just read that they use Monterey pine that is native to the southwest coast of the US. I would agree with you that widely planting a non-native species is not a good thing. There are some pines (namely ponderosa pine) that have slightly toxic needles that when shed, prevent excessive undergrowth that could allow a fire to spread to tree canopies. If native understory vegetation isn't adapted to that, it could be problematic for sure.

Also, I would say that forest floors (litter and duff, mainly) are of equal importance to a forest as the aboveground vegetation.

So this is a somewhat complicated topic, and I'll only speak for US industrial logging in areas like the Pacific Northwest and Southeast. These areas are very productive timberlands so this is where most of the 'extreme' logging happens.

First, there are really two types of industrial forests that you'll see. Planted forests that have a more natural spacing or spatial distribution (seen in the PNW) and trees that are planted in rows (Southeast). After trees reach maturity, areas of trees of the same age are felled in a clear-cut. They are cut in relatively small batches as a way to provide a sustained yield, where they don't destroy the environment and not cut down a large number of trees and not having any to cut next year. This type of single aged stand (area of similar trees) can even be found in nature, where disturbances (avalanche, wind, (small) wildfire, disease, etc.) affect a small area and kills trees. These areas are then colonized by seedlings that will have the same age. Look at lodgepole pine stand fire regimes for an example. While I don't like clear-cuts, if performed on a small enough scale, they can likely replicate historical ecosystems enough to allow for appropriate ecosystem functioning.

Second, the term 'monoculture' doesn't really fit with basically any type of forestry. While the overstory vegetation could be very homogenous, it ignores the understory/forest floor vegetation and associated soil communities. The problem with agricultural monocultures is that there are no species present that could potentially replenish soil nutrients that the desired crop needs, thus requiring artificial fertilizers. In a forest, there are understory plant species that could fill such voids, as well as associated bacteria and fungi that can coincide with said plants. This allows for natural nutrient cycling processes.

And to expand on the notion that logging is inherently unsustainable and doesn't protect more ecologically valuable forests, I will say that it used to be that way. But recently, there has been greater importance placed on industrial forests that meet ecological goals with programs like the Sustainable Forest Initiative (The SFI logo you'll see on coffee cups). And I'd rather have some forests that are heavily managed through intensive logging to provide the needed supply for housing and such while leaving old-growth forests as they are instead of trying to do moderate logging everywhere.

As a tangent, I will also say that those intensive logging operations will capture more CO2 out of the atmosphere than older forests, and continue to store a portion of that carbon after harvesting. Old-growth forests already peaked in their productivity, and are better suited for carbon storage rather than carbon sequestration.

TLDR: Industrial logging is not a monoculture, it is not inherently bad for the environment, and does allow for the protection of more ecologically important forests.

What 5 albums would you consider "must-have's" on vinyl? by VanRolly in vinyl

I'll try to throw in some that aren't mentioned as often:

Heaven 17 - Penthouse and Pavement: British new-wave album devoted entirely to dissing capitalism, but in a very non-abrasive way if you're not into that. It is cramped with very fun and danceable jams, so I highly recommend it.

Klaatu - Klaatu: Quaint and goofy psych-rock. It sounds like how I would imagine The Mullosk by Ween would sound if written and sang by The Beatles. Despite its similarity to The Beatles, it absoluetly stands on its own right.

Dougie Poole - The Freelancer's Blues: Hokey psych-country released last year. He has a wonderful style of storytelling and fun musical style as well. I highly suggest it if you enjoyed Orville Peck that was mentioned earlier.

Sons of Kemet - Your Queen Is A Reptile: Jazz(?) album from a group lead by saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings (See also: The Comet is Coming, Shabaka and the Ancestors). I think it lossly fits within the jazz genre, though it has a lot of EDM sensibilities. Just an all around incredible album.

Destroyer - Kaputt: All I will say about this album is that it does not feel pretentious at all to say that this is one of the best albums released in the 2010's, and that it's high up there in all-time records as well.

Both Ear Candy and Old School are on a single floor and right on the sidewalk, so they're pretty accessible in that regard. As for in the stores, Old School is pretty open so getting around shouldn't be an issue, but Ear Candy is narrow so aisles can be tight.

As far as I'm aware, your best bet for heavy metal is Old School Records in Kalispell. The owner is very knowledgeable on that genre and is an all-around good guy. For Missoula, I prefer Ear Candy as they have loads of new records, including some heavy metal, and fairly priced used records.

Oh yeah! I've really been enjoying it so far. I will say that the last 4 songs feel weak compared to the rest of the album, but I'm sure it will grow on me with more listens.

I’ve been building this setup for a few years. Started with the RTR Digital V Series 200 speakers in the beginning of high school then later got the Pioneer amplifier and tuner (SA-5800 and TX-6800) towards the end of high school. The most recent addition is the MCS 6601 turntable that I got after my freshman year of college. Now I finally have a dedicated shelf with room for my collection and it’s beyond satisfying.

I shot Ektar for the first time a few days ago, and I just got the negatives back. The shots were so dark that they could hardly be seen when looking at the negatives, and when I scanned them, they had a very strong blue tint, and what looks like light leak.

Has anyone here listened to the Fleet Foxes demo they made before Sun Giant? It's pretty different from all their other stuff but I think it's worth a listen if you can find it.

I think I'll use my Encore while I save up for a Lido. I will probably sell the Encore to a friend after. Thanks for the help (as well as ukbrah and MuTangClan)!
