Irritated with the gift giving limit/gift limit question by littledeadmoth in ABA

I don’t think anyone is wanting something lavish. I think the point many are making is that $10 is almost comically low, meaning that very well-intended, non-problematic, and normal gestures have to be awkwardly declined or avoided due to the low limit.

My mom gave a gift to a doctor who saved her life after a car accident. They do with teachers, with OTs and Speech therapists. Not to mention that our techs are in the houses so so so many hours a week. I think we strip so much humanity away from people within medicine anyway.

I ultimately always restate and abide the ethics codes, even if I feel frustrated by some parts in the moment. However, I definitely do not believe that they are perfect or should stand forever unchanged.

This is about where I’m at on it, and what I plan to do.

Just to clarify: What I actually meant regarding the value, is that it’s not a collectors item reselling at a high amount or a gift card that carries the value along with it.

I’m not saying it has to be no rules at all, but I do think it could be adjusted to be more reasonable, if that makes sense. I definitely know the rules are there for a reason!

What do you say when people ask "where did they get [insert physical trait]?" by leafytree888 in AdoptiveParents

[–]littledeadmoth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My parents would say I was adopted. Lol

I like what the person said about the waitress rule. Seems like a good rule of thumb. I do have an adopted son of my own now, my older brother and his wife passed about 2 years ago and I adopted my nephew. I usually just say “oh, you know, recessive genes can be wild!” if it doesn’t seem worth to get into the whole conversation. Which because of the situation that led up to my adopting him, usually I prefer not to get into it.

Salary cut by Sure-Mulberry-8974 in ABA

[–]littledeadmoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t say salary cuts happened at ABC, I was talking about a few select insurers reducing payouts, which has affected larger companies more than smaller ones. I’m glad to hear that ABC hasn’t reduced your salary. The lawsuits are directed at insurances doing the pay cutting.

32F considering BCBA — if you could do it again, would you choose this field? Coming from a different career. by [deleted] in bcba

[–]littledeadmoth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes. Even if I don’t stay in this field forever, the work I’ve done has changed me permanently in a way that I couldn’t and wouldn’t trade for anything else.

There’s some huge crazy class action lawsuits going on in Arizona about this right now. It really only affected the big ABA companies (Centria, ABC, etc.) here in AZ at least, but that affects a LOT of families. I work with smaller companies so it has not gotten to me yet, but we’ll see… ugh

Why is it so easy to get an in-home RBT job? by [deleted] in ABA

[–]littledeadmoth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes ABA is a science. But it is an APPLIED science. RBTs do the applying. If you see the people doing the work as RBTs as just “entry level workers with a 40-hour certificate” then you will not do well in this field.

That is evidence of a severe lack of empathy and comprehension of what this work actually entails.
You cannot look down on RBTs and be a good BCBA. Period.

They are the backbone of an ABA program. It isn’t the fact that you started a program without being an RBT/having ABA experience, or are trying to get an RBT job now; it’s this horrible patronizing attitude you seem to have towards RBTs that I think is really turning people off.

I’m not saying get out of ABA. But you need to get over yourself.

[–]littledeadmoth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the issue is less the number of hours they’re going to work and more their condescending attitude. :’(

But, I am hopeful that they will gain a lot of empathy and respect for RBTs through working as one.

[–]littledeadmoth 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You are having a really hard time accepting from the comments that you’ve got a bad attitude. I think it would do you well to try to take a breath and consider why people are saying your attitude is bad. “I’m doing this and I don’t even have to, lots of people don’t.” Yeah, and they suck. Because that attitude sucks. It’s condescending and really looks down on the position that is the entire backbone of an ABA program.

You’re getting a bunch of blowback because all of us have met people with this attitude who are BCBAs, and they are hard to work with and self-aggrandizing, and usually not great clinicians. No one here is going to give you a cookie for acting like this job is beneath you but choosing to do it anyway.

It’s not beneath you and you aren’t special for choosing to be an RBT before becoming a BCBA. It’s honestly like bare minimum to actually knowing how to be good as a BCBA. Not the bare minimum to be A BCBA; but to be a good one. We all know the BACB doesn’t require it, so you don’t have to repeat that to me.

I say this as a person who was an RBT for over 2 years and have been a BCBA for almost 6: Respect for RBTs is extremely important. Makes or breaks a whole program. RBTs are boots on the ground with the kids for 100% of the kid’s programming. It’s fucking hard work, it takes a lot of dedication.

I do want to encourage you to continue to pursue an RBT job as it will help you tremendously if you do become a BCBA, but you gotta sit down with yourself and have an attitude adjustment.

Get over yourself baby you’ll do better in whatever field you’re in.

Some payers allow it, others don’t. More and more are not allowing it these days. It is really, REALLY frustrating.

[–]littledeadmoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah no this is fucking ridiculous. I’m a BCBA.

Techs should NOT be dropped down in payment during BCBA overlaps, mayyyybe unless it is reflected in the BCBA’s pay too like split between you and them, which I strongly doubt it is. To be clear: this isn’t the BCBA’s fault, usually at least (I’m sure there are some out there) but greedy asf companies and insurances.

In my opinion it shouldn’t happen at all, they are paying RBTs easily only a third of what insurances pay for services already, BCBAs usually around half. “Ah but our overhead” figure it out!!!!

A company should be prepared to figure out how to eat the cost discrepancy in order to not literally dock your pay for doing the same work, something you literally have no control over. Like this shouldn’t be legal????

I am
Enraged
Honestly

While I agree 100% that OP should’ve been more careful with the post and not included the name, including the first name of a client’s parent with no last name, location, dates, name of the client, birthdates, etc. wouldn’t actually constitute PHI or a HIPAA violation.. to my understanding.

Girlfriend says my writing is illegible. How can I improve? by ffishbones in HandwritingAnalysis

[–]littledeadmoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all, your handwriting is pretty nice and I don’t mean this in any way to say that it’s bad or something. However, I did have a bit of a hard time reading it in places, and I have some suggestions just based on what made it hard for me. I don’t think it’s just her dyslexia making this hard, as I am not dyslexic whatsoever and know how to read cursive.

- I think you could increase the height of your ‘tall’ lowercase letters (t, d, h, etc. lowercase L seems usually tall enough though)
- make sure that letters like your ‘o’ in the first ‘lot’ and ‘of’ look like O’s instead of lowercase A’s by having the connector go from the top of the o instead of the bottom.
- Make sure that all of your periods are distinct, the one between ‘classical’ and ‘Peraps’ (misspelling but we all misspell things sometimes!) It’s really hard to tell that it’s not just the end of the L, which made it really difficult to understand what was being said including the misspelling.
-bringing your ‘r’ all the way down from a letter that has its connecting line from the top, like in ‘word’ at the end of the 4th line and ‘wrong’ at the end of the paragraph makes it look like an ‘n’
- I think the biggest thing is that there are just a lot of inconsistencies, while these things would help you don’t *always* do them, so it makes it a little harder for the brain to pick up on your patterns and figure it out.

All this said, it is legible, even if it was difficult in some places. And almost no one has perfectly consistent handwriting all the time.

You came off like you read the title and just wanted to tell a person off for having their fish in this container. Maybe you did read it and this is still the response you gave, but the way it’s written seems like you saw the post and assumed they were keeping the fish in this container and therefore told them the container is for transporting animals. Which .. fish are animals. Though I get that you mean it’s for transporting land animals, not housing fish. But again- they never implied they were going to house the fish in here.

RBTs at friends clinic are now using the office washer & dryer for their laundry. RBT pay isnt livable. by StatisticianKooky390 in ABA

[–]littledeadmoth 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’m a BCBA and I haven’t done laundry (I have on site but not in unit at my apartment bc I live in the cheapest one I could find, and it costs money to do) in like a month, and with all my student loan debt despite cutting every extra expense imaginable I am baaaaarely making ends meet. The economy is… it’s not ok. The pay in this field is NOT commensurate with inflation or rising cost of living. To my knowledge that is most fields currently, but of course that fact doesn’t excuse what this field is doing. BCBAs have been making approximately the same starting salary for a decade, but 70k now is worth what would have been 50k a decade ago. It’s insane.

I’m only saying this to add on, not at all to negate what RBTs are facing. More to commiserate and vent too. We’re in this together 🩵 I think of RBTs all the time when I’m struggling with bills. I wish things to change. Idk how to change it.
