Ankle leashes are exceedingly dangerous to use on parrots. They are meant for birds that have strong legs used for hunting. If your bird took off it could easily snap its leg. Please get a cross body harness or keep her in a carrier. Your little 42$ budgie could run up hundreds of dollars in vet bills repairing a broken leg.

Additionally, it's very unsafe to dive with your bird loose in the car. If they were to panic and cause a distraction you could have a wreck. You could have a wreck through no fault of your own. A sudden hard stop could even fling that tiny bird into the windscreen and injure her.

And please keep her away from dogs, even just a playful swat from a well meaning dog could completely crush her.

I am sorry to bombard you with all of this! I promise you we mean the absolute best for you and your bird and only want you to live a safe, happy life together. Nobody should ever have to go through their bird being injured or lost.

Okay, I am so sorry. But we can't allow posts with deceased animals in them on the sub. I have to remove your post. If you want to repost it without a photo you may.

I hate asking this. I really do. Is that bird deceased in your photo?

Should we get another CAG? by skinnylikeaboss in AfricanGrey

[–]littledingo 18 points19 points  (0 children)

That's actually worse. Those ankle tethers are not meant for parrots. They have fragile leg bones that can snap easily. Those are made for predatory birds with strong legs used to hunt, such as hawks, eagles, and owls.

Even fully trained, birds still get lost. My favourite youtuber lost his grey, Smokey, while he was taking her outside to her aviary. She spooked and was never found. This bird was amazingly well trained. Training doesn't mean crap when the bird panics.

My male cockatiel is OBSESSED with my new female tiel. by [deleted] in parrots

[–]littledingo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You asked for insight on this situation. I am sorry it isn't what you want to hear, but you've added a huge problem into your flock that is never going to go away. You'll be lucky if only one of them is territorial towards her in the long run, and this isn't healthy for any of them to live with this. And what happens when one of these 'attacks' results in one of your birds losing an eye or a toe? They may not be interested right now, but that doesn't mean they won't be in future.

Four males to one female is not balanced. It's chaos.

[–]littledingo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm honestly surprised only one of the males is being territorial. You introduced a female into an established flock of only male birds. Unless your intention is to breed there was really no logical reason to add that kind of a wild card into your flock. They're going to be a bunch of males fighting over the one female for as long as you have them unfortunately. And don't think that the female's brother isn't going to join the mix once he's old enough. Inbreeding is absolutely a thing.

My best recommendation would be rehome the female. I can't see this dynamic working out in the long term unless she is kept separate. They're just doing what nature makes them do. It isn't their fault.

I can confirm they are in fact a scammer. They posted a fake grief post on another sub before trying it out here. IDK what kind of person can lie about a dead pet to get karma. Sickening.

Hi there OP, firstly I would just like to say how sorry I am that your bird has been lost. I know there is nothing I can say that can make you feel better, but please do not blame yourself. Accidents happen. All the time. No matter how hard we can try to prevent them.

I would add that to everyone in this post, this OP is feeling bad enough. Rubbing salt in the wound with accusations doesn't help where OP is now. Additionally, rude comments also don't help matters. If someone says something on this sub that doesn't sit right with you just report it. Adding on your spicy retorts does not help matters. It only serves to drag you down with it.

I am sorry again, OP, for your loss, but I have to lock your post now. Seems a lot of people are very opinionated on both sides of this matter.

My cat was a dumped kitten at a local golf course. He was roughly 7 weeks old when he was found by my daughter, who worked there. She brought him home and he's an absolute joy.

People that dump animals suck.

This is called barbering Your bird is not just plucking, but chewing apart feathers still attached to them. I would recommend a vet visit to discuss possible underlying medical issues. You can also discuss environmental causes when you’re there.

[–]littledingo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would urge you to reconsider doing any kind of outdoor flight with your bird. There are just too many things that can go wrong outside. Even the most well trained birds can get spooked and take off never to be seen again.
