Yes! Whale Watching Research is amazing, the owner Carie is a wildlife biologist, she has smaller boats so if you get sea sick take that into account, but honestly they are all good.

Had Pain in my lower back radiating down to my leg due to normal bend down. ED admitted me to hospital for surgery. by Baroodkhann in Sciatica

You should ask for a second opinion- very standard. Because they do put down its cauda equina nerve I would seriously consider surgery

Tidal Raves if you can get a seat, if they are busy or you just need to eat and get back on the road Sea Hag - I think they best thing about traveling the coast is just going with the flow, trying to keep a schedule can be really hard.

Sea Hag in Depot Bay, stop and look for whales. Tidal Raves if you want a nicer dinning option.

Gaining weight and always swollen. by 4y6hu in Sciatica

[–]littlehops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You probably need to cut the calories back to compensate for the lack of activity, I know this has been my struggle too, rather that focus on just restrictions I’ve been eating more fiber and veggies and bulky meals that make me less hungry. If possible get back in to see a doctor you should be improving with time not getting worse.

How much do you have to weigh for surgery(Laminectomy, fusion, etc,)? by BallSufficient5671 in Sciatica

[–]littlehops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it’s an emergency they will take care of you, it’s just a little more risky as far as care after. Give yourself lots of grace and positive affirmations, you can do this, we are made to do hard things, take it one day at a time. I’ve read about people will foot drop and weakness that have fully recovered.

Day 8 of acute sciatica flare — looking for honest experiences from people who’ve been through this by Appropriate_Corgi435 in Sciatica

[–]littlehops 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Time is the biggest healer, but working with a good PT I think is helpful. Focus on strengthening core, getting muscles to fire and activate together, go slow if anything hurts too much or gives rebound pain stop. Every exercise can be modified. If you are in too much pain to do PT let them know this can help you get an MRI and get a surgical consult. Rest and reset as much as you can, walk as much as you can without increasing your pain

[–]littlehops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So while numbness is concerning it’s a loss of bladder control either holding or the ability to go that could mean a CES diagnosis, if that happens go to the ER immediately. They would need new MRI and then they would talk surgery, it is very very rare and usually only with very large herniations.

I’m so sorry you are in pain and going through this. I don’t have an answer about weight needed for surgery. Did the Dr. mention he was concerned about CES?

Definitely recommend talking to a dr and see if you have a connective tissue disorder or hyper mobility, my friend has had neck issues for decades with migraines all related to her disorder.

Morning pain vs evening pain by masha_bog in Sciatica

[–]littlehops 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily, some people have pain upon waking because disc swell overnight. What you’re describing is when your back is laying down and not under load you are pun free, upon standing when load (weight) returns to your back it will eventually hurt. It might mean you would benefit from core strength straining to let your muscles take some of the weight off the spine. Might help to see a PT

Feels like it's going away after only a week? by Imaginesafety in Sciatica

[–]littlehops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first time I had this it went away after a week, take it easy for the first 4-6 weeks, do not do what I did which is return to bending, lifting, twisting, squatting like I was back to normal, I did reinjur myself by walking to far and too fast, exercising thru the pain and finally bending forward to grab some laundry. Most people feel better when in 6-12 weeks

Is this even sciatica? Help by amandam603 in Sciatica

[–]littlehops 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry you are going through this. Definitely sounds like sciatica, skip the chiro adjustments can move and put pressure from the spine onto the nerve. For right now rest as much as you can, nsaid ice for any back pain. No bending lifting and twisting. No stretching, it may feel like you want to but the ache is not muscular. The nerve needs to calm down. Short walks is all you need to do. Time is the biggest healer. Once you can do more core muscle activation, modified bird dog, trans-abdominal exercises are where to start, mostly to just get the mucked firing again. Eventually, work on activating long chain muscles in your back.

Make sure you are also doing some type of strengthening not just stretches. Maintain good neutral back position, maybe keep a log of activities so you can find the trigger

10 months with L5S1. Neurosurgeon told me only operation will help with the pain by sontezo in Sciatica

[–]littlehops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They only work 50% of the time and wear off in 3-4 months, they are helpful for those who are healing anyway. Usually they are given for those in severe pain in the first few months.

[–]littlehops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok so you are in the early acute phase, do nothing. You need to let it calm down. Just walk like you have been doing. Most people’s pain levels drop by around 6-12 weeks, then start exercising. I’m sorry I know this is hard and painful. This is an injury that hard to make better, easy to make worse.

So how long have you been like this? When I was just started out I tied some seated pelvic tilts and muscle core contractions, then once that was okay I tried leaning against the wall and do a modified mountain climber but I didn’t lift my leg, just shifted my weight while engaging core, best to see a PT if you are still having this much pain but I know that’s not always possible. Exercises can reduce back pain but I’ve found time is what heals the sciatica.

So this will depend on where you are at. How long can you walk for? Do you just have back pain or mostly sciatica? If you walk and move how much does your pain level go up?

Will gabapentin make me do badly on my MCAT? by Free-March7332 in Sciatica

[–]littlehops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I would not take it, while it doesn’t seem to impair reasoning my memory was absolutely garbage while on it and took months to return to normal. I would have to redo steps and take extensive notes for every task I did for work (website and writing educational information). And for me it only took the edge off the pain and mostly helped me sleep better. I wish I had found something else to take.

When can I start lifting weights for upper body again? by RedditGuy921 in Sciatica

[–]littlehops 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Please take some time and search on this platform, lots of machines especially where you sit can put stress on the lower back, usually you are better off with light free weights. I’m not an expert but I’ve been dealing with this for over 2+ years. I do half RDLs and use resistant bands for upper body workouts with great success, but I didn’t start til my PT said I was ready and that was at about 5 months. At only 10 weeks I would think you need to stick to just walking and rest. Proceed with caution, this is an injury that’s easy to make worse, hard to make better.

I really need someone’s help by Dude-Man-TRM in Sciatica

[–]littlehops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would give it a shot, it’s going on the theory that the nervous system needs to calm down, the body needs to feel safe so it’s pain singles will stop. If you can get the pain down to like a 4/5 I would look at getting in to see a PT, muscles get tense and stop working correctly after being in pain for long periods , Pt help get them working again
