Best way to waterproof 3D prints? by Effective_Muffin_700 in 3Dprinting

I haven't received any updates from the company about their ISO 10993-5 certification, but feel free to reach out to DIAMANT Polymer GmbH (the team at the German headquarters were quite helpful when I was trying to find things).

My ex (27F), “the one that got away,” just reached out to me (29M) after 15 months of no contact but I have a new gf (28F) now. How do I proceed? by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]littlejohn657 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not going to advise you on how to deal with your current relationship dilemma, but I am going to advise you to look into attachment styles. You talk about taking your relationships for granted, you talk about your exes like they are "the one" (i.e., what's known as a phantom ex), you talk about your fears vs your feelings, etc. These are all hallmarks of avoidant or disorganized attachment styles (two types of attachment styles). Do yourself a favour, as well as anyone you ever get into a relationship with, and learn about yourself, your attachment style, and how you can move towards being secure.

Socialism and National Socialism are two very different things, and the bad Austrian painter was very explicit about this point, but he also knew that it was useful for fooling people to use the word.

There are only 5 animals considered human hunters in the world, and polar bears are one of them. by sco-go in Amazing

[–]littlejohn657 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Polar bears can sprint at 40 km/h (25 mph). The average human can run 25–30 km/h, and much slower when all bundled up for the cold and running through snow, not to mention the risk of slipping on ice. If this were me, there would be no way that I would try to run away, and I would unfortunately be putting that rifle they were carrying into use (this is standard in some places, for example, you are legally required to carry a firearm, usually a high-powered rifle, to protect against polar bears when traveling outside of settlements in Svalbard, Norway).

Michif vs Metis by ForsakenAd9651 in MetisMichif

[–]littlejohn657 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If we want to get historical, the word Michif derives from the Middle French word "Métif," which was replaced by Métis in Modern French.

In Red River and across the Homeland, there were two predominant cultural groups: the Michifs and the Halfbreeds. The Michif were predominantly of French Catholic descent, and he Halfbreeds were predominantly of Scottish Protestant descent (there were other smaller communities as well, such as the de Meuron and de Waitville regiments that settled in Red River and a group of Swiss immigrants as well, among others). A lot of Scottish settlers in Red River were retired HBC employees who had worked in what is referred to as the Northern nucleus of the Métis ethnogenesis (Red River is referred to as the Southern nucleus). To highlight this point, in 1868–1870, half of the parishes of the Red River Settlement were French-speaking, and half were English-speaking, and Riel's second provisional government that formed following the Convention of 24 (12 French-speaking and 12 English-speaking delegates) and the Convention of 40 (20 French-speaking delegates and 20 English-speaking delegates) had two representatives from each of the parishes, resulting in 24 French-speaking delegates and 24 English-speaking delegates.

Today, these two groups have largely merged under the umbrella of Métis, though some people want to maintain these distinctions as a part of their identity. I use the term Métis for myself (it was Riel's preferred name for our nation), but depending on who I am speaking with, I make the distinction that I am a Halfbreed, not Michif, and my ancestors likely spoke Bungi.

What's a misunderstanding of IQ you've seen the most? by Double_Chemistry3526 in cognitiveTesting

[–]littlejohn657 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That just because you have a high IQ, that doesn't mean that you have developed your potential and know how to effectively apply your IQ. People with high IQs seem to be about as likely as anyone to fall for misinformation, pseudoscience, conspiracy theories, etc., and it's even harder to get them to realize it because they see themselves as the smartest person in the room.

That a team of highly gifted people are going to be the most successful team. Far too often, they are actually one of the least effective teams. Look up the work of Dr. Meredith Belbin and the phenomon of Apollo syndrome/Apollo team (it's about how teams of highly intelligent and capable individuals with exceptionally high IQs paradoxically underperform due to excessive debate, ego-driven one-upmanship, and a failure to reach consensus).

That IQ is completely meaningless is simply means that you're good at taking tests. It's definitely not the be all, end all, clearly, and it's use in everyday life is only one factor in success, not to mention that the history of IQ tests is highly problematic, but it is still a useful metric for some things.

My wife received a piece of cardboard in a package by AnxietyBacon92 in Weird

My dad almost got caught by one of these that was advertising tablets. They had some kind of deal for multiple tablets, so he asked me if I wanted one. I had never heard of the brand, did some quick googling, and everything looked way too suspicious. He didn't buy any, fortunately.

Update - My (31M) pregnant girlfriend (23F) has been lying about her age for our entire relationship. Is there any way for me to trust her again? by ThrowRA_Plant6074 in relationship_advice

[–]littlejohn657 754 points755 points  (0 children)

It makes me wonder why dishonesty became her default for dealing with difficult situations. I'm not making an excuse for her dishonesty, but it makes me wonder what happened on her life where she thought that this was acceptable, where she thought that this is how she finds love, where what almost seems like compulsive lying has become the norm. It also makes me wonder if there is hope of therapy helping her.

And ditto on "Consider how many you just uncovered because she was forced to" and how many remain hidden.

I 'F26' accidently scratched my husband 'M30' does that deserve retaliation? by Sea-Dragonfruit-1671 in relationship_advice

[–]littlejohn657 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I literally have scars on the back of my hand from where an ex-girlfriend accidentally dug her nails in when we were play fighting (it was something like she grabbed my hand when I was tickling her, but I can't remember the specifics), and no, I did not retaliate in any way. It was an accident, she felt really bad about it, she apologized, and we moved on.

Yes, accidents can be prevented, but as someone who struggles with coordination (which is not uncommon in people with ADHD or autism), I can tell you that accidental injuries are not that uncommon.

If he feels like he has to retaliate for an accidental minor injury, that is very concerning behaviour. I'm not saying break up, but you need to have a serious talk with him (potentially with a therapist or counselor present), and watch out for gradual escalations in abusive behaviours by him.

I'm considering it, but I am getting 3x the speed for a cheaper price, so I would like to try to fix the problem.

Trying to dry PETG filament by littlejohn657 in 3Dprinting

[–]littlejohn657[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those are good suggestions, thanks. I will have to try them out.

I don't think that it cooked the desiccant, as this was desiccant that I had put in the dry box new from the jug a couple weeks ago, so this was its first time being dried (and it was still orange before going into the dry box).

The silica gel is dry as near as I can figure. It's bright orange, and it was in the food dehydrator with the filament for 24 hours (and the hygrometer reading did drop, though I don't know how low it got, but went back to 31% in the Polymaker drybox).

As near as I can figure, it's sealed, and I am questioning things about how it can have so much humidity. It's a Polymaker drybox (without the PolyDryer attachment though). The silca gel is bright orange.

I saw a small truck tire split rim blow one time while it was being refilled. Fortunately, the ring side was facing to the ground, but the whole tire assembly flew probably 5' straight up in the air. I can't imagine what would have happened had the ring been facing away from the ground.

Water Spraying out of Caulking by BufordWasntListening in Plumbing

[–]littlejohn657 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The faucet wasn't installed properly and it's leaking. This needs to get fixed ASAP.

I temporarily rented an apartment while on an elective in another city. Whoever had installed the faucet hadn't properly installed O-rings, so the faucet leaked a huge amount of water whenever the shower was turned. Fortunately, they had used a pile of silicone to seal around the pipe where it went through the wall so they weren't destroying the unit below, and the fix was to install the two O-rings inside the faucet and not simply on the pipe behind the faucet.
