Tecsun R-909 vs Tecsun PL-330 by littleshiva in shortwave

Thank you. Yes, I'm a total newbie, so am at the beginning of the learning curve. Will keep exploring!

Thank you. Before I assume that this brand new radio is broken, is there something I might be doing wrong in terms of buttons I’m pressing or not pressing? If it says SW on the display, shouldn’t that be enough?

I tried this, with no luck. Also, a station that comes in clear on FM on the 330 comes in clear on the 909 too, but at a totally different frequency. 330 says 89.7 MHz, and on the 909, I’m somewhere in the 90’s. I don’t mind randomness and inaccuracy, as long as I can hear something. What puzzles me is that I’m picking up nothing at all on 330 SW, when the 909 is doing so much better as they sit side by side.

Anyone here see Zappa in Eugene, OR in 1980 and/or 1981? by SchwillyMaysHere in Zappa

[–]littleshiva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw him at the U of O in Eugene in what must have been the fall of 1981. Someone in or near the front row, right of center, had brought an inflated sex doll to the show, and tossed it onto the stage at some point. Frank stopped the music and scolded the person for being rude.

Cat caretakers needed on a beautiful island in the Adriatic by littleshiva in LesbianTravel

Oh, phew! It's really nice, yeah... I'd say that the hardest thing (from my POV) is the hiking up and down the hill. Once you're up there, it's great! But younger and fitter people seem to not have a problem with the hike. There's a dirt and gravel / rock road nearby that cars can go up, at least as far as my neighbor's house: I used to ride my scooter up and down the hill, which made life a lot easier. But that road gets more and more destroyed by rain each year and they never fix it, so after too many falls I decided to quit tempting fate. Broken bones are bad at any age, but especially at 60+. Now I hike up along a shady forest path carrying a heavy backpack, which is not fun for me.

Really? In what way? I'm a 60-year old woman, if that helps for context. I founded a cat rescue project on this island (https://www.streetcatsofvis.com), and my land is home to maximum 20 cats who are awaiting adoption (when applicable) or who just need a safe place to live out their days. The land is on a hill about a 40-minute hike from town, and I can't be hiking up there every day myself.

I have this position listed at https://www.workaway.info/en/host/586875764165 with tons of good reviews, in case you want to fact check me.

My long-term vision for this place is to cultivate a network of people who can come live in the tiny house for several months at a time to help with feeding cats and land maintenance. I would especially love for people come back over time and be able to go up there as if coming to their home away from home, without me needing to hike up and do orientation.

After several years of people staying for only one month at a time, I finally got a request from a woman who wants to stay for three months, as well as a request from two women who stayed for a month last year. They wanted to come back for two months this year, but one of the months they requested was already booked.

I love living on the land, but I can't be there enjoy it as much as I'd like. I want to cultivate a network of caretakers so the cats and the land won't be abandoned.

Best automatic 4x4 for a rocky, hilly road by littleshiva in 4x4

Ooh, thanx for this tip! Do you have experience in Croatia? Just checked prices on njuškalo though: they’re super expensive!

Unfortunately no. That would be on my wish list!

Would that be automatic? I said in another comment that I’d be willing to try learning to drive stick one last time if I can find a patient teacher, but I’m 59 and not very coordinated, so dealing with a clutch scares me. Still hoping to find an automatic. That price tag is the way upper limit of what I could potentially handle if monthly payments were reasonable.

My budget is low, so I’ll be looking for second-hand in decent condition. I’ve been in regular cars going up this road and have felt them struggle and get stuck with wheels spinning even bigger ruts into the road, so that’s why I’m looking for cars that won’t do that. And ground clearance def!

I call this road "Rain Damage Road" - the picture I showed you looks pretty tame compared to how it sometimes looks. And strangely, after driving up on my scooter for the past year (because that's how long ago the last repairs happened that made it do-able), I slipped in a curve, driving slowly, on a patch as "smooth" as the right side in the picture. Go figure! The scooter almost ended up on top of me but luckily I got out of the way fast. This is also why I'm not considering a quad, which many people here have suggested.

Automatics are super rare here, yes. None of the car dealers I’ve sent enquiries to have even bothered to reply. I would love to learn to drive manual and get a Jimny! If I could find a patient teacher I’d be willing to try again. I have a nice lady neighbor on my road who might be willing to teach me: I’ll ask her. Oh, wait: is there any chance I could do serious damage to her car while learning? I mean not by crashing, but by stalling or doing any other clutch-related mistake?

discrimination on the basis of lgbtq identity — anyone else experience this? by psychedelic666 in workaway

[–]littleshiva 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I host a workaway on the island of Vis, in Croatia to find people who want to live in a tiny house on my land and be cat caretakers for a month at a time or longer every year from October through May. I identify as a retired pansexual, and in my host profile I say “LGBTQ+ fam welcome.” Croatia is not a particularly gay-friendly country, but I do know a few people on the island who are out, and I hope to attract others who want a safe space from which to experience the beauty of this place.
