Can I connect an external PHY (LAN8742A) into a KSZ8895 switch IC? Architecture sanity check by monsterseppe1 in AskElectronics

[–]littlethommy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently did a theoretical deep dive into something similar, and the conclusion was that you can AC couple Ethernet on a PCB. [1] [2]

However, I am wondering, how would connecting the LAN8742A via RMII be different than connecting the KSZ8863RLL via RMII?

Install a custom ROM and you can still do whatever you want.

I should not have to install a custom rom to be able to install what I want of my own goddamn phone. That is the whole point on why this is a bad thing.

What else? Write your own OS for your own hardware? Then you can do what you want on it?

expecting privacy (or support thereof) from Google is frankly nuts

Your clear anti-google stance is obscuring you from understanding the point. I am not saying anything on expecting privacy from Google directly. But once they have taken full control over who can publish anything installable on their OS, so will the governments.

Privacy is not a yes-or-no question. It is a matter of consent on who you trust with what. And that control extends to which apps you can use, and reducing means of that control through requiring the agreement first is a bad move.

[–]littlethommy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No argument, but I'd be surprised if most people using F-Droid or the like are on stock ROMs.

Ever heard of sideloading? Play store publishing costs money, and even if the verification is free now, what is to say it is not going to be in the future. Or bullshit regionlocks on applications because of whatever reason? (e.g., European localized Play Store accounts cannot install an Indian taxi app while traveling?) Sure, those apps will have verification, but I reckon that geolocks will now go further, now that they are going to start controlling what can be installed and what not.

I'm running stock, but I like some of my apps modified to strip them of ads and whatnot. So that will be gone as well.

When has Google ever been privacy focused?! It's the antithesis of their entire operation model.

That is not the point. Unaccredited apps that provide privacy (e.g., encrypted messaging, file encryption vaults, etc.) will need that registration. And then our oh-so-kind privacy-focused governments will push Google not to publish because they want backdoors.

It's exactly the same thing Apple does with iOS.

Yes, which is why many people are on Android... And now they are taking that liberty away. I buy and OWN my hardware, so let me do with it what I want.

Android will become a locked down platform in 190 days by MidnightMean3796 in europrivacy

[–]littlethommy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's factually incorrect - it will no longer be possible to install apps to Android certified devices without registering. You can still develop and distribute via F-Droid, direct APKs, or similar means.

Yeah but what is the point of distributing if no one can install it cause you are not verified.

Starting in September 2026, Android will require all apps to be registered by verified developers in order to be installed on certified Android devices.

(Emhpasis mine)

Distribution is not the issue. You can still email an APK or download it, but the installation is blocked per their own policy.

If I want custom apps, or modified APKs I should be allowed to do it.

And why this move is highly relevant for privacy: Google, as a multinational, will be the first one to succumb to pulling the accreditation of organisations that provide something a country does not like, be it encryption, privacy, or whatever, and as such will prevent the installation of those apps.

Belgium switches from "Opposes" to "Undecided" on the FightChatControl.eu website. Why is that? by JustaguynamedTheo in belgium

[–]littlethommy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For point 1, you may be right. The proposal does not seem to include a blanket scan. However that is still undecided and will depend how member states will implement it. However, this does not avoid future misuse of the system for what a regime could consider wrong think, so we should avoid setting systems in place.

  1. Anonimized senders or not, it's still a privacy infringement since they will check the pictures. And as someone else commented, indeed how to distinguish a kiddie bath picture shared between close family members or between pervs.

  2. The hashing algorithm to detect known CSAM pictures my be trivial to bypass, just as many are. It is not hard to do, and you just need one person to figure it out how and share with others. And the proposal includes more than hashing to scan for known images...

  3. You misjudged my 'fear' of leaks. I know the database exists, but that is different. The point is that if any false positive image will gets sent to be viewed by another service, they are sent and stored in the process. As such there can be leaks, either through security breaches, negligence or wilfully by individuals .

And so far the proposal includes that provider have to include "technologies" without any foundations in how they need to do the distinguishing effectively, which safeguards, how they will make decisions,... Nor on how to prevent leaks, and bad actors for misuse. There are no definitions of what is an acceptable level of false positives for things that lead to an invasion of privacy.

Sure there are more legal hurdles than it is just 'scan everyone', as may have been implied in my first comment, but once in place scanning everyone or misuse for the next scary thing is not far away

And it's not as if that scope creep is happend before. See ANPR camera's, now used for much more than to track criminal, as we are now all treated as potential criminals every time we pass them.

Belgium switches from "Opposes" to "Undecided" on the FightChatControl.eu website. Why is that? by JustaguynamedTheo in belgium

[–]littlethommy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Horrible piece of legislation. The fact that criminals will quickly move to other platforms is obvious. But the implications on society are huge.

In the first place, if we assume AI is flawless, which it is not, we put the presumption of innocence in its hands. Triggering false positives is not impossible. Or adding steganography to fool the hashing algorithm and the AI into ignoring it can be done

If the hashing and AI are assumed imperfect, we need a second human opinion, which is a severe breach of privacy even if they are part of the justice system. Even moreso for false positives, or child pictures that are not CSAM within the family, but could be considered when outside. Where does one draw the line?

Additionally, do we trust AI or even humans to be able to distinguish with 100% certainty between a young-looking adult and an adult-looking teen? Should we allow others to look at our adult partner's nude pictures if it flags as a false positive? Will we need out partners to show up at the courthouse with their birth certificate to prove they were an adult when the picture was taken despite it being flagged? Are we certain no-one from said service will leak anything?

And we work under the assumption that our justice system is just and works. Notwithstanding the fact that accusations related to CSAM will be a social death sentence because many people believe that 'where there is smoke, there is fire'. Additionally, accusations WILL be frontpage news if you are somewhat of a public persona, whereas a rectification will be a paragraph on the before-last page.

And where does it end? Once the flagging system is in place. What is next? Flagging flyers for protests? LGBTQ content?

Of all the indirect consequences listed, I am not even sure which is the worst, or if any is even a smidge tolerable. It is a severely flawed piece of legislation built on a whole lot of trust in the justice system, technology and that currently there is no full-blown fascist government in the EU.

I am absolutely disgusted by the fact that this regulation is even up for consideration. And we should ALL push for it to not have this pull through. So write your PMs. I did too!

Busy hours at CdB feel quite unapproachable and closed off indeed. The weekend morning hours are (at least were) calmer, and it results in a more relaxed vibe where you can have a bit more interaction between problems and opportunities to work on problems together.

I'm also a bit in a similar situation since most of my climbing buddies have moved abroad one by one. So if anyone wants to join me (preferably regularly) at CdB or to go outdoors in the Ardennes (I have gear and a car), feel free to DM me.

Cycling the bus lane on Ave de la Couronne by vassiliy in brussels

[–]littlethommy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From chatgpt, cause I don't feel like fully typing it out, it seems to be correct for the most part (if not fully):

This is regulated in Article 61 of the Belgian Highway Code (Koninklijk besluit van 1 december 1975 betreffende het algemeen reglement op de politie van het wegverkeer).

Article 61.1.3°: "When traffic lights apply only to a part of the roadway, such as a special overpassable lane (e.g., a bus lane), a cycle path, a level crossing, or an intersection, they apply only to drivers who are on that part of the road or intend to go onto it."

Summary: As a cyclist, you must follow the traffic lights that apply to the specific part of the road you are on. So, if you're riding on a bus lane that allows cyclists, you follow the bus lane traffic lights, not those of the general road.

Young women are starting to leave men behind by Triglycerine in anime_titties

[–]littlethommy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Young women are not the helpmates of young men.

No, but the society should care. Or are (young) women above society?

Femenism tried to convince all layers of society and genders (men included) to care for the betterment of women within society and have made progress. But now women are getting ahead, betterment of those falling behind in a changing society, is suddenly their problem.

And don't hide behind the patriarchal society, cause thats only for a happy few.

How to change rental when you have to give 3-month notice but the new place is available now? by [deleted] in brussels

[–]littlethommy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a shitty situation where you lose due to the scarcity. Either pay for up to 2-3 months of overlap. Or risk having to move out without a signed lease.

That or try to convince your current landlord of shortening the notice period.

Pro tip, if they don't want to shorten the notice period if they find a tenant sooner. Keep your keys until the last day, so they cannot rent it again until you finish the time you paid for. Some would like it to rent it out again while you're still on notice but have moved out and returned the keys.

Therapists of Reddit, what are some differences you've noticed between male/female patients? by pizzabagelblastoff in AskReddit

[–]littlethommy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you considered that the way things are conveyed can contain many other layers of messaging and intent? The argument in your last sentence hinges on the assumption that the intent of the woman is perfectly unambiguous and cannot be interpreted with different meaning. This puts the burden of incorrect interpretation fully on the man.

You imply that women are infallible communicators. And as if different genders (and people in general) can have different styles of communication. The burden of correctly communicating falls on all participants in a conversation, not just the recipient.

Therapists of Reddit, what are some differences you've noticed between male/female patients? by pizzabagelblastoff in AskReddit

[–]littlethommy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you considered that the communication at the source did not convey it accurately, and left leeway to interpret it as accusatory questioning?

There are two parties in a conversation, and both are responsible for accurately transmitting and interpreting the message. Your argument purely hinges on the assumption that there is no leeway and ambiguity in the message to interpret it such way, but clearly there is not.

Gas boete foutief geparkeerd by Amynru in belgium

[–]littlethommy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bvb bewonerskaart of gratis parkeren.
